How long do you have to have a job to collect unemployment in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I worked at a retail job for about 8 months before getting laid off last week. My friend said you need to work for at least a year to get benefits but I've also heard different things. Does anyone know what the actual requirement is for Washington ESD? I'm worried I might not have worked long enough.

You don't need to work for a full year! Washington ESD looks at your earnings over what they call the 'base period' which is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file your claim. You need to have earned at least $3,850 during that base period, with earnings in at least 2 quarters.

Oh that's a relief! So it's more about how much you earned rather than just how long you worked?

0 coins

Exactly. And you also need to have earned at least 1.25 times your highest quarter earnings during the entire base period. It's a bit confusing but the earnings matter more than just time on the job.

I had the same worry when I got laid off after 6 months at my job. Turns out I qualified no problem because I had worked part-time at another place the year before, so my earnings added up across the base period.

0 coins

That's good to know! I did work part-time at a restaurant before my retail job so maybe that will help my case.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can input your earnings to see if you qualify. But honestly, calling them to verify is probably your best bet. I know it's hard to get through on the phone though - took me like 50 tries last time.

0 coins

Ugh the phone situation is terrible. I tried calling for 3 days straight and either got busy signals or got hung up on after waiting an hour.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it on here and it actually got me connected to a Washington ESD agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than redial hell.

0 coins

Never heard of that but I'll check it out. Anything is better than calling 100 times a day.

0 coins

wait so you can use earnings from multiple jobs? i thought it had to be from one employer

0 coins

Nope, Washington ESD looks at ALL your covered employment during the base period, regardless of how many different employers you worked for.

0 coins

The base period thing is confusing AF. I worked for 10 months but apparently the quarters didn't line up right and I barely qualified. The timing of when you file your claim matters a lot for which quarters they count.

0 coins

What do you mean the timing matters? Should I wait to file or file right away?

0 coins

File right away! You can't get benefits for weeks before you file. I just meant that depending on when you file, they might use different quarters to calculate your base period earnings.

0 coins

Yeah definitely don't wait. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start getting benefits if you qualify. There's also a one-week waiting period before payments start.

I'm in a similar situation - worked at a temp agency for about 9 months but had gaps between assignments. Does anyone know if temp work counts the same way?

0 coins

Yes, temp work counts as long as the agency was paying into the unemployment system. Most legit temp agencies do, but you'd want to verify that on your earnings record.

0 coins

How do I check my earnings record? Is that something I can see online?

0 coins

You can request it from Washington ESD or sometimes see it when you file your initial claim. It shows all your reported earnings by quarter and employer.

0 coins

This whole system is so complicated. Why can't they just say 'worked X months = qualify' instead of all this base period quarter math stuff?

0 coins

Because some people work seasonal jobs or have varying hours. The earnings-based system is supposed to be more fair but yeah it's confusing as hell.

0 coins

I guess that makes sense but still annoying when you're already stressed about losing your job.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify for benefits, the amount you get depends on your earnings too. Higher earners get more per week, up to the maximum.

0 coins

What's the maximum weekly benefit amount right now?

0 coins

I think it's around $999 per week for 2025, but don't quote me on that. The Washington ESD website has the current rates.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the help! I'm going to file my claim today and see what happens. Sounds like I probably qualify based on what you all said.

0 coins

Good luck! Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, employer names, reason for separation, etc.

And remember you can always call Washington ESD if you have questions during the process. If you can't get through, that Claimyr service I mentioned might help - check out claimyr.com.

Does anyone know if you can still collect unemployment if you quit your job instead of getting laid off?

0 coins

Generally no, unless you quit for good cause like unsafe working conditions, harassment, or significant changes to your job. But that's a whole different topic with lots of rules.

Okay thanks, I was just curious. I got laid off so shouldn't be an issue for me.

this thread was super helpful, i was worried about the same thing since i only worked 7 months at my last job

0 coins

Right? I feel so much better knowing it's about earnings not just time worked.

0 coins

The Washington ESD eligibility requirements are actually pretty reasonable compared to some other states. I moved here from Texas and it was way harder to qualify there.

0 coins

Good to know! Sometimes it feels like Washington makes everything harder but maybe that's not the case with unemployment.

0 coins

The benefits are definitely better here. Higher maximum weekly amount and longer duration in most cases.

0 coins

Pro tip: keep all your pay stubs and employment records organized. Makes filing your claim so much easier when you have everything ready to go.

0 coins

Good advice! I've been pretty good about keeping my pay stubs so that should help.

0 coins

Also screenshot or save your Washington ESD confirmation numbers and emails. You'll need them if there are any issues later.

0 coins

Update: I called Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and actually got through! Turns out my temp work does count and I qualify for benefits. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

Awesome! Glad it worked for you. Way better than trying to call on your own right?

0 coins

Yeah seriously, I would have given up after the first hour of busy signals. This actually connected me to someone who could help.

0 coins

Just want to point out that the base period can be confusing because it's not always the most recent quarters. Sometimes they use an alternate base period if you don't qualify with the standard one.

0 coins

What's an alternate base period?

0 coins

It's the most recent 4 completed quarters instead of the first 4 of the last 5. They'll automatically check both to see which one qualifies you for higher benefits.

0 coins

Right, and this can help people who had recent job changes or were just starting to work more hours.

0 coins

The most important thing is just to file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. You can always ask questions later but you can't backdate benefits to before you filed.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely filing today. Better safe than sorry!

0 coins

I wish more people knew about the earnings requirement vs time requirement. So many people think they need to work a full year and never even bother to apply.

0 coins

Exactly! I probably would have just assumed I didn't qualify if I hadn't seen this thread.

0 coins

That's why forums like this are so valuable. The official Washington ESD info is accurate but not always easy to understand.

0 coins

For what it's worth, even if you're not sure if you qualify, it doesn't hurt to apply. The worst they can say is no, and at least you'll know for sure.

0 coins

True! And from what everyone's saying, it sounds like I probably do qualify anyway.

0 coins

With 8 months of work you should be fine, especially if you earned decent wages. The system is designed to help people who've been working and paying into it.

0 coins

Don't forget that if you do qualify, you'll need to do weekly claims and job search activities to keep getting benefits. But that's a whole separate topic from just qualifying initially.

0 coins

Yeah I've heard about the weekly claims. How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?

0 coins

I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check with Washington ESD since the requirements can change. Activities include applying for jobs, networking, interviews, etc.

0 coins

This has been really helpful! I was in the same boat as OP but now I feel confident about filing my claim. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge.

0 coins

Glad it helped you too! This forum is great for getting real answers from people who've been through it.
