How long do you have to work somewhere before you can get unemployment benefits in Washington?

I just started a new job 2 months ago and I'm wondering if I'd be eligible for unemployment if things don't work out. I know there are work requirements but I'm not sure exactly how long you need to work before you can qualify for Washington ESD benefits. Does anyone know the minimum time you have to be employed? I've heard different things from coworkers and want to get the real answer.

It's not about how long you worked at your current job - it's about your total earnings over what's called the 'base period.' Washington ESD looks at your wages from the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. You need at least $1,500 in total wages during your base period to qualify.

Oh that makes more sense! So if I worked somewhere else before this job, those wages would count too?

Ben Cooper

•

Exactly! All your W-2 wages from covered employers during that base period count toward the $1,500 minimum.

yeah but dont you also need to work a certain number of hours or something? i thought there was more to it than just the dollar amount

You're thinking of the work search requirements after you start getting benefits. For initial eligibility, it's mainly about the wage requirement and being able and available to work.

I had trouble figuring this out when I first applied too. The Washington ESD website has all the details but it's kind of confusing to navigate. If you need to talk to someone directly about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to a real person at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service but anything that helps you get through to Washington ESD sounds useful. Their phone lines are impossible.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check that out if I need to call them.

WAIT hold up - I thought you had to work for at least 6 months somewhere to get unemployment?? That's what my manager told me when I started my job. This is confusing.

That's a common misconception. Your manager might be thinking of FMLA or some company-specific policy. For Washington ESD unemployment, it's really about the wage requirement during your base period, not a specific time at one job.

Same here - I always thought it was 6 months minimum. Good to know that's not actually the rule!

The base period thing is tricky to understand at first. I had to look at my Social Security statement to figure out what quarters I worked in when I applied last year.

That's a good idea. I should probably check my records to see what wages I have from previous jobs.

You can also request a wage statement from Washington ESD to see exactly what they have on file for you.

Another thing to remember is that you have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. So if you quit without good cause or get fired for misconduct, you might not qualify even if you meet the wage requirements.

Good point. I'm hoping it won't come to that but it's good to know all the rules.

Yeah the 'good cause' thing can be tricky. They're pretty strict about that.

I wish Washington ESD made this clearer on their website. I spent forever trying to figure out if I qualified when I first lost my job.

Right? The government websites are so confusing. Half the time I can't find what I'm looking for.

That's why services like Claimyr are helpful - sometimes you just need to talk to a human who can explain things clearly.

Don't forget about the weekly job search requirements too once you start getting benefits. You have to be actively looking for work and keep a log of your job search activities.

How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?

Mae Bennett

•

It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but it can vary depending on your situation. Could be applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

Just to add - if you're in a union, there might be different rules about standby status that could affect your eligibility. Worth checking if that applies to your situation.

I'm not in a union but that's good to know for others reading this.

Yeah standby benefits are different from regular UI. Most people don't qualify for that.

The $1,500 minimum seems pretty low honestly. Is that really all you need to have earned?

0 coins

Ben Cooper

•

It's the minimum to qualify, but your actual benefit amount depends on how much you earned. Higher wages in your base period mean higher weekly benefits.

Reina Salazar

•

Right, and there's also a maximum weekly benefit amount. I think it's around $1,000 per week but I'm not sure of the exact current amount.

One more thing - make sure to file your claim as soon as possible after you become unemployed. You can't get benefits for weeks before you file, even if you were eligible.

Khalid Howes

That's really important to know. I'll definitely file right away if I need to.

Yeah don't wait thinking you might find a job quickly. Better to file and then stop the claim if you find work.

Has anyone used that Claimyr service that was mentioned earlier? I'm curious if it actually works for getting through to Washington ESD.

I used it when I had issues with my claim status. It definitely helped me get through faster than trying to call on my own. Worth it if you're having trouble reaching them.

Good to know! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my adjudication and can never get through.

This thread has been really helpful! I didn't realize how the base period worked. Thanks everyone for explaining it clearly.

Same here! I feel much better informed now about how the whole system works.

Reddit unemployment threads are honestly more helpful than the official Washington ESD website sometimes.
