How long do you have to file for unemployment benefits in Washington?

I got laid off from my retail job about two weeks ago and keep putting off filing for unemployment because I've been job hunting like crazy. My friend said there's some kind of deadline for filing but I can't find clear info on Washington ESD's website. Does anyone know how long you actually have to file for unemployment after losing your job? I don't want to miss out on benefits I'm entitled to but also don't want to file if I might get a new job soon.

You should file ASAP! In Washington, you can file a claim up to one year after your job separation, but you can only get benefits dating back to when you actually filed. So if you wait 2 months to file, you lose those 2 months of potential benefits even if you're approved.

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't realize you lose the time before filing! That's really good to know, thank you.

0 coins

This is exactly what happened to me. Waited 3 weeks thinking I'd find something quick and lost out on $1,800 in benefits.

0 coins

The key thing is Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period, but that starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Plus you need to be actively looking for work to qualify, so if you're already job hunting, you might as well file and get the benefits while you search.

0 coins

I am definitely actively searching so that wouldn't be an issue. Going to file today I think.

0 coins

Wait, there's still a waiting week? I thought they got rid of that during COVID.

0 coins

No, the waiting week came back. It's the first week you file where you don't get paid, but it counts toward your benefit year.

0 coins

You generally want to file as soon as possible after losing your job. In Washington, you have up to one year from the date you became unemployed to file an initial claim, but there's a big catch - you can't get benefits for weeks before you actually filed. So if you wait 2 months to file, you lose those 8 weeks of potential benefits.

0 coins

Oh wow, so I've already lost two weeks of benefits by waiting? That's frustrating but good to know.

0 coins

Yeah this is why they always say file immediately. Even if you think you'll find work quickly, just file anyway because you can always stop claiming if you get a job.

0 coins

I was in the same boat last year - kept thinking I'd find work quickly so why bother with the hassle. Took me 3 months to find something and I lost out on a lot of money. The filing process isn't actually that bad once you get through it.

0 coins

How long did the actual filing take you? I keep hearing it's super complicated.

0 coins

Maybe 30-45 minutes if you have all your employment info ready. The worst part was just getting through on the phone when I had questions.

0 coins

The one year deadline is correct but like the previous poster said, benefits only start from when you file. I made the same mistake and waited 3 weeks thinking I'd get hired somewhere fast. Cost me about $1,200 in benefits I could have received. File your claim online at esd.wa.gov right away.

0 coins

Ugh that's exactly what I was worried about. I'll file today for sure.

0 coins

At least you're only 2 weeks out, could be worse! I know someone who waited 2 months.

0 coins

Just went through this whole process myself. Had trouble getting through to Washington ESD for weeks with questions about my claim. Kept getting busy signals or getting hung up on after waiting forever. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

Never heard of that but sounds useful. The phone system at Washington ESD is definitely broken.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble reaching them. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

wait so if I file today but I was laid off 2 weeks ago, I can't get those 2 weeks of money?? that seems really unfair

0 coins

Unfortunately no, benefits only start from your filing date. It's one of those things they don't make very clear but it's in the rules.

0 coins

that's so stupid, how are people supposed to know that

0 coins

Yeah the whole system is set up to make you lose money if you don't know all the tricks.

0 coins

The key thing to remember is that you have to file for the 'waiting week' too even though you don't get paid for it. Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement but you still need to file that first weekly claim. Don't skip it or you'll mess up your whole claim sequence.

0 coins

What's a waiting week? I thought they got rid of that?

0 coins

They eliminated the unpaid waiting week but you still have to file that first weekly claim to establish your benefit year and start the process.

0 coins

This is confusing. So do you get paid for the first week or not?

0 coins

Speaking of getting through on the phone - if you run into issues with your claim or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, check out claimyr.com. They help you get through to an actual agent instead of sitting on hold forever. I used them when my claim got stuck in adjudication and it was a lifesaver. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

0 coins

Is that one of those services that charges you? Sounds too good to be true.

0 coins

They do charge but it was worth it for me. Way better than calling 50+ times a day and never getting through.

0 coins

Good to know this exists if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim goes smoothly though.

0 coins

Just to add - even if you think you might get a job soon, you can always stop filing weekly claims if you get hired. There's no penalty for filing and then not needing the benefits. But you can't go back and get benefits for weeks you didn't file.

0 coins

That makes sense. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

0 coins

Exactly! Plus if the new job doesn't work out, you already have your claim established.

0 coins

I filed 6 months after I lost my job and still got approved, so you definitely have time. But yeah, I only got benefits from when I filed forward, not backdated. Make sure you have all your employment info handy when you file - employer names, dates, wages, reason for separation.

0 coins

Good to know I can still file. I have all my pay stubs and the layoff paperwork so I should be ready.

0 coins

Pro tip: gather ALL your employment info for the last 18 months, not just your most recent job. Washington ESD looks at your whole base period.

0 coins

The system is ridiculous. I had to call Washington ESD like 50 times to get through and then they put me on hold for 2 hours. Finally someone told me about using Claimyr to get connected faster. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

0 coins

How does that Claimyr thing work exactly?

0 coins

You just put in your info and they call Washington ESD for you until they get through, then connect you to the agent. Way better than sitting there redialing all day.

0 coins

One year seems like a long time but honestly don't wait. The longer you wait the more complicated things can get, especially if you do any work in between or if your employer contests your claim. File within the first few days if possible.

0 coins

What do you mean about the employer contesting? Should I be worried about that?

0 coins

If you were laid off due to lack of work you should be fine. It's when people get fired for performance or quit that employers sometimes contest.

0 coins

Yeah layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. Just make sure you select the right reason when filing.

0 coins

Also make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still being processed. You can't go back and file for weeks you missed.

0 coins

So I file the initial claim first, then weekly claims after that?

0 coins

Exactly. Initial claim first, then weekly claims every week to actually get your payments.

0 coins

Don't forget you need your last employer's info when you file - company name, address, your last day worked, reason for separation, etc. Makes the process go faster if you have all that ready.

0 coins

Good point, I should gather all that before I start the application.

0 coins

Also have your Social Security card and ID ready, plus bank info if you want direct deposit.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website says you should file in your first week of unemployment, but like others said, you technically have up to a year. Just don't wait because you can't backdate benefits to before you filed.

0 coins

Where on the website does it say that? I've been looking for this info and keep getting lost in all the pages.

0 coins

It's on the main unemployment page under 'When to File' but honestly their website is pretty confusing to navigate.

0 coins

I waited almost a month before filing because I was embarrassed about being on unemployment. Biggest mistake ever - lost out on over $1000. Don't let pride cost you money you're entitled to.

0 coins

I can relate to feeling embarrassed about it. But you're right, it's money I paid into the system.

0 coins

Exactly! You paid unemployment taxes when you were working, this is your money.

0 coins

I filed about 6 weeks after I lost my job and it was fine, but I definitely wished I had filed sooner when I realized how much money I left on the table. Don't make my mistake!

0 coins

Yeah that seems to be the consensus - file early even if you're not sure you'll need it.

0 coins

How much were you eligible for per week if you don't mind me asking? Trying to figure out if it's worth it for me.

0 coins

It depends on your earnings but for me it was about $450/week. Check the benefit calculator on Washington ESD's site.

0 coins

Quick question - if you file late do they make the process harder or anything? Like is there extra paperwork?

0 coins

No, the process is the same whether you file right away or months later. You just lose the potential benefits for the weeks before you filed.

0 coins

Okay good, I was worried they would ask a bunch of extra questions about why I waited.

0 coins

Just curious - does anyone know if the one year deadline is from when you were laid off or from when your last job ended? I had a job that ended in December but didn't get laid off from my next job until February.

0 coins

It's from your most recent job separation that you're filing for. So in your case it would be February.

0 coins

Thanks! That's what I figured but wanted to make sure.

0 coins

The whole phone situation with Washington ESD is a nightmare. I tried calling for 3 weeks straight about my claim status. Finally broke down and used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got through in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying.

0 coins

Is that service legit? Seems too good to be true.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They have that demo video that shows exactly how it works. Saved me from going insane trying to get through myself.

0 coins

Make sure you file online at esd.wa.gov rather than trying to call in your initial claim. The online system is available 24/7 and much faster than waiting on the phone.

0 coins

Thanks, I was planning to do it online. Seems like calling is a nightmare from what everyone's saying.

0 coins

Online is definitely the way to go for filing. Save the phone calls for when you actually need to talk to someone about problems.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll need to do the job search requirements too once your claim is active. Washington requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby.

0 coins

What counts as job search activities?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, interviews, contacting employers directly. They have a list on the Washington ESD website.

0 coins

And keep records of everything! They can audit your job search log at any time.

0 coins

One more thing - if you do any part-time or temporary work while collecting benefits, make sure you report it on your weekly claims. Don't try to hide it because they'll find out eventually and you'll have to pay back overpayments.

0 coins

Good to know. I might pick up some gig work while I'm looking for full-time.

0 coins

You can work part-time and still collect partial benefits, just be honest about the hours and wages on your weekly claims.

0 coins

Bottom line - file now, don't wait any longer. Two weeks isn't terrible but every day you wait is money you're leaving on the table. The whole process takes like 30 minutes online.

0 coins

Alright, you've all convinced me. Filing my claim right after I post this reply. Thanks everyone for the helpful info!

0 coins

Good luck! Hope your claim goes through smoothly and you find work soon.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you run into any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or anything like that, that Claimyr service people mentioned is really helpful for getting through to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Way better than the normal calling nightmare.

0 coins

I'll definitely keep that in mind if I need to call them. Hopefully everything goes smoothly with my online filing.

0 coins

Most claims go through fine, but it's good to know about options if you need help later.

0 coins

Update us on how it goes! Always curious to hear about other people's experiences with the Washington ESD system.

0 coins

Will do! Going to file right now and I'll post back with how it went.

0 coins

OP, definitely file now. I work in HR and I always tell people who get laid off to file immediately even if they think they'll find work quickly. You never know how long it might take, and at least you'll have that safety net.

0 coins

That's really helpful to hear from someone in HR. I'm convinced - filing today for sure.

0 coins

Do you know if there's any issue with filing if you're getting severance pay?

0 coins

Severance might affect your benefits depending on how it's paid out. You should report it when you file and Washington ESD will determine if it impacts your eligibility.

0 coins

The thing that surprised me was even though I filed right away, my first payment was delayed because they had to verify my employment. So don't expect money immediately even if you file on time.

0 coins

How long did verification take for you?

0 coins

About 2 weeks, but I've heard it can take longer if they have trouble reaching your former employer.

0 coins

Good to know so I don't panic if it takes a while. Thanks for the heads up.

0 coins

If you do file and then need help with anything, I also used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Had an issue where my weekly claim wasn't going through and they got me connected to someone at Washington ESD who fixed it same day. Worth having in your back pocket.

0 coins

How much do they charge for that service?

0 coins

I don't want to quote prices since they might change, but for me it was way less stressful than trying to call Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

This thread convinced me to finally file too. Lost my job 3 weeks ago and kept putting it off. Better late than never I guess!

0 coins

Same! Let's both get our applications in today.

0 coins

Good luck to both of you! The hardest part is just getting started.

0 coins

Just remember you have to file weekly claims once you get approved, even if you're actively interviewing. Missing a weekly claim can mess up your benefits.

0 coins

When do you file the weekly claims? Same day each week?

0 coins

You can file Sunday through Friday for the previous week. I always do mine on Sunday mornings so I don't forget.

0 coins

One more thing - if you get a job offer while you're collecting unemployment, you're supposed to stop filing claims starting the week you begin work. Don't try to double dip or you could get in trouble for overpayment.

0 coins

What if you start a part-time job? Can you still collect partial benefits?

0 coins

Yes, but you have to report all earnings on your weekly claim and they'll adjust your benefit amount accordingly.

0 coins

That's good to know in case I can only find part-time work initially.

0 coins

Glad this thread exists! I was wondering the same thing. Sounds like the answer is file ASAP and don't wait around hoping for the best.

0 coins

Exactly what I learned. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! Hope it goes smoothly for you.
