How long can I apply for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I've been working at a retail job for about 8 months but they just cut my hours down to like 10 hours a week which isn't enough to live on. I'm wondering if there's a time limit on when I can apply for unemployment? Like do I have to apply right away after losing hours or can I wait a few weeks to see if things get better? Also not sure if reduced hours even qualifies me for benefits. Any advice would be helpful.

You should apply as soon as possible! There's no specific deadline for applying but you want to get your claim started ASAP because there's a waiting week and processing time. Reduced hours can definitely qualify you for partial unemployment benefits if your weekly earnings are below a certain threshold. Washington ESD will calculate if you're eligible based on your reduced income.

•Oh good to know about the partial benefits! I had no idea that was even a thing. Do I apply the same way as regular unemployment?

•Yes same application process through the Washington ESD website. Just make sure to report your part-time earnings each week when you file your weekly claim.

I think there might be some time limits though? Like you have to apply within a certain timeframe of when your hours got reduced or something. Not 100% sure but I'd definitely not wait too long just in case.

•There's no specific application deadline per se, but your benefit year is based on when you file your initial claim. So if you wait months to apply, you could be missing out on weeks of potential benefits during that time.

•That makes sense, I definitely don't want to miss out on any benefits I might be entitled to.

Just went through this exact situation last month! My hours got cut at my restaurant job and I kept putting off applying thinking it would get better. Big mistake - I should have applied right away. The whole process took like 3 weeks before I got my first payment and I could have been getting partial benefits that whole time. Don't make my mistake!

•3 weeks?? Wow that's longer than I expected. Was there any issues with your claim or is that just normal processing time?

•Normal processing time plus the mandatory waiting week. My claim was pretty straightforward with no adjudication issues.

•Yeah the waiting week is killer when you're already struggling financially. At least partial UI helps bridge the gap though.

For anyone having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about their claim timeline, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to ESD agents. They have this system that calls for you and gets you through the phone queues. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another service trying to make money off desperate people?

•It actually worked for me. I was trying to get through about my adjudication status for days and this got me connected in like 2 hours. Worth it when you're stressed about your claim.

The key thing is that you want to establish your benefit year as early as possible. Even if you're not sure you qualify, it's better to apply and let Washington ESD make that determination rather than waiting and potentially missing out on benefits you're entitled to.

•Good point. I guess there's no harm in applying and seeing what happens rather than assuming I don't qualify.

•Exactly! And even if you don't qualify for regular UI, there might be other programs or resources available through WorkSource that could help.

One thing to keep in mind is that you'll need to meet the work search requirements even for partial unemployment. Make sure you're documenting your job search activities because they do audit those.

•What exactly do I need to do for the work search requirement? Is it different since I'm still working part-time?

Madison Tipne
•You still need to do 3 work search activities per week and keep a log. Doesn't matter if you're working part-time, the requirement is the same.

•Actually I think the work search requirement might be waived if you're on standby with your current employer expecting to return to full hours. Worth checking with ESD about your specific situation.

been there done that with the reduced hours situation. Retail is brutal right now with all the hour cuts. I waited almost a month before applying and definitely regretted it. The partial benefits aren't huge but every little bit helps when you're trying to pay rent.

•Yeah exactly, even a couple hundred dollars would make a huge difference right now. Thanks for sharing your experience.

•No problem! Just don't overthink it - apply now and figure out the details as you go. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step.

Make sure you have all your employment history ready when you apply - they'll want details about your current job and previous employers. Having your pay stubs handy will speed up the process too.

•Good tip! I should gather all that stuff before I start the application.

•Yeah and if you've had multiple jobs in the last 18 months make sure you have contact info for all of them. ESD needs to verify your work history.

Does anyone know if there's like a statute of limitations on applying? Like if someone lost their job 6 months ago could they still apply now or is it too late?

Callum Savage
•There's no hard deadline but you can only get benefits going forward from when you file, not retroactively. So if you wait 6 months you've missed out on 6 months of potential benefits.

•That makes sense. Better late than never I guess but definitely better to apply right away.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing sometimes. I tried calling to ask about partial benefits and was on hold for literally 3 hours before giving up. Anyone have tips for actually getting through to a human?

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. That's usually the best time to get through.

•I had luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Saved me from sitting on hold all day.

•Might have to try that if I can't get through the normal way. This whole process is so stressful.

For what it's worth, I applied for partial unemployment when my hours got cut at my warehouse job and the whole process was pretty smooth. Took about 2 weeks to get approved and start receiving benefits. The online system worked fine for me and I didn't need to call at all.

•That's encouraging! I was worried it would be super complicated but sounds like it might not be too bad.

•Just be honest about your situation and answer all the questions accurately. The system is designed to help people in your exact situation.

One more thing - make sure you understand how your part-time earnings will affect your weekly benefit amount. There's a formula they use and you'll still get some benefits as long as your earnings are below a certain threshold. Don't assume you won't qualify just because you're still working some hours.

Brian Downey
•Good point. I was worried that working even part-time would disqualify me completely.

•Nope, that's exactly what partial unemployment is for! It's designed to help people whose hours have been reduced.

•Awesome, thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. I'm going to apply this week and see what happens.

Smart move applying sooner rather than later. The worst thing that can happen is they say you don't qualify, but at least you'll know for sure rather than wondering. And if you do qualify, you'll start getting benefits right away instead of missing out on weeks of payments.

•Exactly my thinking. Better to try and find out than assume I don't qualify and miss out.
