How long after being unemployed can you file for unemployment in Washington?
I got laid off from my construction job last Friday and I'm wondering if there's a waiting period before I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My buddy told me you have to wait a certain amount of time but I can't find clear info on their website. I've never filed for unemployment before so I'm not sure about the timing. Should I file right away or do I need to wait? I'm getting nervous about my bills coming up.

You should file as soon as possible! There's no waiting period to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. There is a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, but that starts from when you file, not from when you became unemployed.

•Oh wow, I didn't know that! So I should have filed on Monday? Does that mean I'm already behind?

•Don't worry too much about a few days delay. Just file today and you'll be fine. The important thing is getting your claim started.

Yeah file immediately. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking I needed to job hunt first and it just delayed everything. Washington ESD backdate to when you became unemployed but only if you file within a reasonable time.

•What counts as reasonable time? I'm worried they'll deny me for waiting almost a week.

•A week is nothing to worry about. I've heard of people filing a month later and still getting backdated benefits.

The key thing people miss is that you can file your claim anytime after becoming unemployed, but you need to file your weekly claims every week to maintain eligibility. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Thanks for the tip! I was dreading having to call them since I keep hearing horror stories about wait times.

•Never heard of Claimyr but anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds worth trying. Their phone system is absolutely terrible.

THERE IS NO WAITING PERIOD TO FILE!!! This is such a common misconception. You can literally file the day you lose your job. The one week waiting period is for receiving benefits, not for filing. People lose money every day because they think they have to wait to file.

•Exactly! I see this question all the time and it drives me crazy. Washington ESD even says on their website to file immediately.

•Good to know! I'm going to file today then. Better late than never I guess.

Just to be clear about the timeline: You can file your initial claim immediately after job loss. Then there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. You still need to file weekly claims during that waiting week though. After that, you'll receive payments for each week you're eligible and file your weekly claims.

•So I file the initial claim today, then start doing weekly claims right away even though I won't get paid for the first week?

Brandon Parker
•Exactly! You need to file weekly claims for every week you want benefits, including the waiting week.

•This is important - don't skip filing your weekly claim during the waiting week or you'll create gaps in your claim.

The Washington ESD website is pretty clear about this but nobody reads it apparently. File immediately, there's no benefit to waiting. Your effective date will be the Sunday of the week you became unemployed.

•I tried reading their website but it's so confusing with all the different sections and legal language.

•Yeah their website is not user friendly at all. That's why so many people end up confused about basic stuff like this.

Had a similar question when I got laid off from my restaurant job in March. Filed the same day and had no issues. The longer you wait, the more complicated it can get with documentation and proving when you actually became unemployed.

•That's a good point about documentation. I have my termination letter so I should be fine there.

•Perfect! Keep that letter handy, you'll probably need it during the application process.

Quick tip - when you file, make sure you have all your employment history for the past 18 months ready. Washington ESD will need details about your previous employers, wages, and dates of employment. Having this info ready will make the application process much smoother.

•I've only had one job in the past 18 months so that should be easy. Do I need pay stubs or just the general info?

•Just the general info for the initial filing. They'll request additional documentation if needed during processing.

Don't overthink it man, just file today. I've been through this process twice and both times I filed within a few days of losing my job. No problems either time. The Washington ESD system is designed to handle claims from people who just lost their jobs.

•Thanks for the reassurance! I was making this way more complicated in my head than it needed to be.

Another vote for filing immediately. I work in HR and we always tell employees to file for unemployment as soon as possible after termination. There's literally no advantage to waiting and several disadvantages.

Chloe Zhang
•What kind of disadvantages? Just curious what I might have avoided by filing sooner.

•Mainly just potential delays in processing and having to remember exact dates later. Nothing major if you're only a few days late like you are.

For what it's worth, I filed about 10 days after I lost my job because I was dealing with family stuff and completely forgot. Washington ESD still processed my claim normally and I got benefits backdated to when I actually became unemployed. So a week delay definitely won't hurt you.

•That's really helpful to know, thanks! I feel much better about the timing now.

Since you mentioned being nervous about bills, remember that even after you file, it can take 1-2 weeks for your claim to be processed and approved. If you run into any issues or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can really help you get through to an actual person instead of waiting on hold forever.

•Good point about the processing time. I'll definitely check out Claimyr if I need to call them for any reason.

just file online its super easy. took me like 20 minutes and i got my confirmation number right away. then you just wait for them to process it

•20 minutes doesn't sound too bad. I was expecting it to take hours based on what people say about government websites.

The online system is actually pretty straightforward once you get started. Just make sure you answer all the questions accurately, especially about why you're unemployed and whether you're able and available to work. Those answers affect your eligibility.

•I was laid off due to lack of work, so that should be straightforward. And yes, I'm definitely able and available to work.

•Perfect, that's the ideal situation for unemployment benefits. You shouldn't have any issues with eligibility.

One thing to remember is that once you file, you'll need to do your weekly claims every week, usually on Sunday. Set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget. Missing a weekly claim can interrupt your benefits.

Chloe Zhang
•Good tip about setting a reminder. I'll do that as soon as I finish filing the initial claim.

Alright, I think everyone's covered the basics pretty well. File today, don't worry about the few days delay, and you'll be fine. The system is designed to help people in your exact situation. Good luck with your claim!
