How does unemployment work in Washington State - confused first-timer needs help
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm totally lost on how unemployment works. Everyone keeps telling me different things about Washington ESD and I don't even know where to start. Do I file online? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? And what's this weekly claim thing people keep mentioning? I've never done this before and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. The Washington ESD system can be confusing at first but it's not too bad once you understand the basics. You'll file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov, then file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and your separation information from your employer.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for anything from my employer before I can file?

Peyton Clarke
•No, you can file right away. Your employer will get contacted by Washington ESD to verify your separation details.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. After you file your initial claim, you'll get a determination letter in about a week telling you if you're approved and how much your weekly benefit amount will be. Then you just file your weekly claims every Sunday.

•What happens if I don't file a weekly claim on time?

•You can still file it late but you might not get paid for that week. Try to file every Sunday if possible.

One thing that saved me a lot of hassle was using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim. The phone lines are always busy and I was spending hours trying to call. Claimyr (claimyr.com) basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped when I needed to check on my claim status.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit. I was skeptical too but it got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them. This trips up a lot of people.

•What counts as a job search contact?

•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, going to job fairs, networking events. Washington ESD has a list on their website.

•Also register with WorkSourceWA - that's required too and they have job search resources there.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they put my claim in adjudication for no reason. good luck getting anyone on the phone to explain what's happening

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Peyton Clarke
•Adjudication just means they're reviewing your claim for some reason - could be employment verification, eligibility questions, etc. It's frustrating but pretty common.

The weekly claim questions are pretty straightforward - did you work, did you look for work, are you able and available to work. Just answer honestly and you'll be fine.

•What if I work part-time while collecting unemployment?

Aria Khan
•You can work part-time and still collect benefits. Just report all your earnings when you file your weekly claim and they'll adjust your benefit amount.

One more tip - set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account early if you don't have one already. That's how you'll access your unemployment account online. Sometimes it takes a day or two to get verified.

Misterclamation Skyblue
•Is that different from the regular Washington ESD website?

Peyton Clarke
•SAW is the login system for all Washington state services. You'll use it to access your ESD account, but the actual unemployment stuff is on the ESD site.

Don't stress too much about making mistakes. The system is designed to help people and most issues can be fixed. Just file your claim as soon as possible because there's a waiting week before you can start getting payments.

•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Everett Tutum
•It's the first week of your claim where you don't get paid. Everyone has to serve one waiting week per benefit year.

•Yeah it's annoying but that's just how the system works. Plan for it financially if you can.

I remember being just as confused when I first filed. The Washington ESD website has some good tutorial videos that walk you through the whole process step by step. Check those out before you start filing.

•Good idea, I'll look for those videos. Thanks everyone for all the help!

Also keep in mind that your benefit amount is based on your earnings from the past year, not just your most recent job. So if you had other jobs in the past 18 months, make sure you include all that information when you file.

•I worked at two different places last year. Do I need documentation from both?

•You should have the basic info like dates and employer contact info, but Washington ESD will verify everything with the employers directly.

Just to follow up on my earlier comment about Claimyr - I ended up using them again when I had issues with my job search log getting rejected. The agent was able to explain exactly what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. Definitely worth it if you run into problems and can't get through on the phone.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I don't want to get into pricing here but it was totally worth it for the time and stress it saved me. Check their website for details.

Make sure you file your claim on the right day of the week based on your Social Security number. Washington ESD has specific days for filing to spread out the load on their system.

•How do I know what day I'm supposed to file?

Lydia Santiago
•It's based on the last digit of your SSN. The website will tell you your assigned day when you set up your account.

been through this whole process twice now and the key is just being patient and following the rules exactly. Don't try to game the system or leave anything out - they will find out and it just creates more problems

•Honest mistakes can usually be corrected. Intentional fraud is a whole different story and can get you in serious trouble.

The good news is that once you get your first payment, the rest usually goes pretty smoothly as long as you keep up with your weekly claims and job search requirements. It's just that initial setup and first few weeks that can be confusing.

•That's reassuring. I was worried this was going to be complicated forever.

•Nah, it becomes routine pretty quickly. The hardest part is just getting started.

One thing I wish someone had told me - keep records of EVERYTHING. Save all your determination letters, correspondence from Washington ESD, job search logs, everything. You never know when you might need to reference something.

•Good point. I'll start a folder for all this stuff.

•Yeah definitely do that. I had to appeal a disqualification once and having all my documentation saved me.

The Washington ESD customer service is actually pretty helpful once you get through to them. The problem is just getting through. That's where services like Claimyr come in handy - they handle the waiting and calling for you.

•I might have to try that if I run into problems. Thanks for mentioning it.

Don't forget that you can also visit a WorkSource office in person if you need help with your claim or job search. Sometimes face-to-face help is easier than trying to figure everything out online.

The most important thing is to file your initial claim as soon as possible after you lose your job. You can't get benefits for weeks before you file, so don't wait around thinking about it.

•I'll file tomorrow then. Thanks for all the advice everyone, this has been really helpful!

•Good luck! The process isn't as scary as it seems once you get started.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you might want to have taxes withheld from your payments to avoid owing money at tax time.
0 coins
Misterclamation Skyblue
•I didn't even think about taxes. Can I set that up when I file my claim?
0 coins
Natalie Khan
•Yes, there's an option to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you set up your payment method.

One last tip - if your claim gets denied for any reason, don't panic. You have the right to appeal and lots of denials get overturned if you provide the right information or documentation.

Misterclamation Skyblue
•How long do you have to appeal a denial?
0 coins
Daryl Bright
•Usually 30 days from the date of the determination letter. Don't wait though - appeal as soon as you can if you disagree with a decision.
