It's all done online through the Washington ESD website. You'll need to create an account and file your initial application. Make sure you have your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and your most recent pay stub ready.

•The official site is esd.wa.gov - that's the only legitimate one for Washington state unemployment

I just went through this process last month. You'll need to file your initial claim first, then file weekly claims every week to get paid. The initial claim asks for all your job history, dates, wages, reason for separation from each job. Take your time filling it out because mistakes can delay your claim.

•how long does it take to get approved? im really worried about paying rent

•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks. But if they need to investigate anything (called adjudication), it can take much longer.

The Washington ESD system can be really frustrating to navigate, especially when you're stressed about money. If you run into issues or need to talk to someone, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to ESD agents on the phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

•It's legit - they just help you get connected to ESD when the lines are busy. Way better than hitting redial for hours like I was doing.

Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington, so the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts counting. Also, you'll need to register for work search on WorkSource Washington and start looking for jobs immediately.

•wait what do you mean waiting week? i dont get paid the first week?

Lorenzo McCormick
•Correct - Washington has a one-week waiting period where you don't get benefits. But you still need to file your weekly claim for that week.

•That's so stupid. When you're broke you're broke, why make people wait an extra week

•Don't worry, just take your time. The main thing is to click on 'File a New Claim' when you first log in.

One more important thing - when you're filling out your work history, be as accurate as possible with dates and wages. ESD will verify this information with your employers, and any discrepancies can cause delays or even disqualification.

•what if i dont remember exact start/end dates from jobs? some of mine were temporary

•Do your best to estimate, but try to get as close as possible. Check old tax documents or pay stubs if you have them.

•You can also call your old employers HR department - they usually have that info on file

The system is down for maintenance every Sunday night which is super annoying. Try to file your weekly claims on Monday-Saturday to avoid that headache.

Make sure you understand the difference between your initial claim and weekly claims. The initial claim is the big application you do once. Weekly claims are the short forms you file every week to actually get paid. You can't get paid without filing those weekly claims even if your initial claim is approved.

•ok so i file the big application first, then file weekly claims every week after that?

Dananyl Lear
•Exactly! And make sure you file your weekly claims on time - there are specific deadlines.

•What happens if you file a weekly claim late? I was sick one week and forgot

•You might be able to file it late but you need a good reason. Contact ESD to explain the situation.

Don't forget you'll need to do job search activities and keep a log. Washington requires you to actively look for work while collecting benefits.

•how many jobs do i need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Ana Rusula
•It varies depending on your situation, but generally 3 job search activities per week. Could be applications, networking, interviews, etc.

I had to deal with identity verification when I first filed. They wanted copies of my ID and Social Security card uploaded through their system. Just be prepared for that possibility.

•ugh more delays. how long did that take?

Fidel Carson
•About a week once I uploaded everything. Not too bad really.

Pro tip: if your claim goes into adjudication (investigation), don't panic. It just means they need to verify something about your separation from work. It takes longer but most people still get approved.

Honorah King
•what would cause that to happen?

Isaiah Sanders
•Could be if your employer contests the claim, if there are questions about why you were laid off, or if there are discrepancies in your application.

•Mine went to adjudication because my boss said I quit but I was actually laid off. Took 6 weeks to resolve but I got approved and backpay.

The phone system at Washington ESD is absolutely terrible. If you need to call them, prepare to spend hours trying to get through. That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful - they handle the calling nightmare for you.

•is there any way to get help without paying for a service?

•You can try calling early in the morning or use their online messaging system, but honestly the wait times are brutal either way.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up or you'll be waiting for checks in the mail. The direct deposit info can be entered when you file your initial claim.

•good point, i definitely want direct deposit

One thing that caught me off guard - you might owe taxes on your unemployment benefits. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but just be aware of it.

•ugh taxes on unemployment money? that sucks

Nalani Liu
•Yeah it's annoying but unemployment is considered taxable income unfortunately.

If you're having trouble with the Washington ESD website or phone system, definitely check out Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day. The video demo explains it well: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•I used Claimyr too when my claim was stuck. Worth it just for the peace of mind of actually talking to someone.

The whole process is honestly pretty straightforward once you get started. The hardest part is just that first step of creating your account and filing the initial claim. After that it's mostly just filing weekly claims and looking for work.
