How do I pay back unemployment benefits to Washington ESD - overpayment notice received
Got a letter from Washington ESD saying I owe them $2,850 in unemployment benefits from 2024. The notice says it's an overpayment but I'm honestly confused about why this happened. I thought I reported everything correctly when I was filing my weekly claims. The letter mentions something about 'unreported wages' but I definitely reported all my part-time work. Has anyone dealt with paying back unemployment benefits before? What are my options here? I can't afford to pay this all at once and I'm worried about what happens if I can't pay it back right away.

You have several options for paying back unemployment overpayments to Washington ESD. First, check if you can appeal the overpayment determination - you usually have 30 days from the notice date. If the overpayment is valid, Washington ESD offers payment plans. You can set up a repayment agreement online through your SecureAccess Washington account or call their overpayment unit directly.

•Thanks! I'll check my account online. Do you know if there are penalties for setting up a payment plan versus paying in full?

•No penalties for payment plans as long as you stick to the agreed schedule. They're usually pretty reasonable about working with you.

•How long did it take you to finally reach someone? I've been trying to call but can't get through.

•Try using Claimyr.com - it helps you get through to Washington ESD agents automatically. I used it when I had adjudication issues and it saved me hours of calling. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Before you pay anything, make sure you understand WHY they're saying you were overpaid. Request a detailed breakdown of the overpayment calculation. Sometimes Washington ESD makes mistakes in their wage matching process, especially if you had multiple employers or if there were delays in wage reporting.

•Good point. The notice just says 'unreported wages' but doesn't give specifics. How do I request more details?

•You can request an overpayment breakdown through your online account or by calling the overpayment collection unit. They should provide dates, amounts, and which weeks were affected.

I'm dealing with this same issue right now! Washington ESD says I owe $3,200 and I'm freaking out. I don't understand how they calculate these overpayments. Like, I reported my work every single week when I filed my claims. This is so stressful.

•Right?? It's so confusing. Did you get any explanation about what wages they say you didn't report?

•Not really, just some vague letter about wage discrepancies. I'm going to try calling them but everyone says it's impossible to get through.

•You could try the Claimyr service to get through to them faster. I heard it helps with the Washington ESD phone system.

The Washington ESD overpayment system is ridiculous. They make it nearly impossible to understand what you supposedly did wrong, then expect you to pay back money immediately. I had to appeal mine twice before they finally admitted their wage matching was wrong.

•How long did the appeal process take? I'm wondering if I should just set up payments or try to fight it.

•My first appeal took about 6 weeks, but they denied it. Second appeal with more documentation took another 8 weeks but they finally reversed the overpayment. Worth fighting if you think you're right.

•What kind of documentation did you need for your appeal?

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD about overpayments, I successfully used Claimyr recently. It automatically calls and waits in line for you, then connects you when an agent is available. Made it so much easier than spending hours on hold.

•How much does it cost? I'm already stressed about money with this overpayment.

•It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com - they focus on helping people get through to unemployment offices efficiently.

Check if your overpayment qualifies for a waiver. Washington ESD can waive overpayments in certain circumstances, like if it wasn't your fault or if paying it back would cause financial hardship.

•I didn't know waivers were possible! What are the requirements for getting one approved?

•You typically need to show that the overpayment wasn't due to fraud or your fault, and that repayment would prevent you from meeting basic living expenses. There's a waiver request form you can submit.

been there. mine was only $800 but still hurt. ended up doing $50/month payments for over a year. they took it out of my tax refunds too which was annoying

Miguel Alvarez
•They can take it from tax refunds? I had no idea about that.

•yeah they can intercept state and federal refunds if you default on payments. another reason to set up a payment plan early

Important note: if you're currently receiving unemployment benefits, Washington ESD can also reduce your weekly benefit amount to recover the overpayment. They typically take 25% of your weekly benefit until it's paid off.

•Good to know. I'm not currently on benefits but might need to file again soon.

•They did this to me and it made things really tight financially. Definitely try to set up your own payment plan first.

Make sure you keep paying something even if it's small. Washington ESD can send overpayments to collections and that really messes with your credit score. Even $25 a month shows good faith.

Miguel Alvarez
•How long before they send it to collections? The notice doesn't mention a timeline.

LunarLegend
•Usually several months but it varies. Best to contact them proactively about payment arrangements.

Has anyone tried disputing the wage information that Washington ESD used for the overpayment calculation? I'm wondering if employers sometimes report wages incorrectly to the state.

•Yes, wage reporting errors happen more often than people think. You can request copies of the wage records Washington ESD has on file and compare them to your own records.

•That's a good idea. I'll make sure to gather all my pay stubs before I call them.

just want to add that the washington esd customer service for overpayments is actually better than their regular claim line. still hard to get through but they seem more helpful once you do

Miguel Alvarez
•That's somewhat reassuring. Do they have a separate number for overpayment issues?

Isabella Oliveira
•i think it goes to the same main number but you select a different option. they transfer you to the collections department

Whatever you do, don't ignore the overpayment notice. I made that mistake thinking it would just go away and it definitely didn't. Washington ESD doesn't forget about money they think you owe them.

•Yeah, I definitely don't want to make this worse by ignoring it. Thanks for the warning.

For what it's worth, I successfully got my overpayment waived last year. The key was showing that I reported everything correctly and the overpayment was due to their system not processing my wage reports properly. Took about 3 months but worth the effort.

Miguel Alvarez
•That gives me hope! What evidence did you provide to show you reported correctly?

•I kept screenshots of every weekly claim I filed showing the wages I reported. Also got letters from my employers confirming the dates and amounts I worked.

The hardest part about Washington ESD overpayments is just getting someone on the phone to explain what happened. Once I finally talked to an agent, they were actually pretty helpful in setting up a reasonable payment plan.

Update: I just checked and you can actually start a payment plan online through your SecureAccess Washington account without having to call. Look under the 'Overpayments' section if you have one pending.
