First week disqualified due to DoorDash/Spark - will my second ESD payment ever arrive?

I'm at my wits' end with my unemployment situation. After months of waiting (since January!), I finally got approved for UI benefits on July 14th with a monetary determination letter. I was SO relieved! But now I'm confused and worried again. When I filed my first certification, I honestly reported my gig work (I've been doing UberEats deliveries a few hours each week just to keep the lights on). My claim immediately went into "pending" status with a note about "adjudication - self employment." Checked this morning and saw my first week shows as "disqualified" - is this just the waiting week or is it because of my delivery gig? The second week still says "pending" with no payment issued. I've already stopped doing the delivery gigs completely since I thought UI was finally coming through, and now I'm panicking about August rent. I can't get through on the phone and the ESD website gives zero helpful information. Will I actually get paid for that second week? Has anyone else had their claim go through adjudication for self-employment issues?

So from my experience, the first week being disqualified is almost certainly your waiting week. Washington still has the one-week waiting period before benefits kick in. The self-employment adjudication is likely what's holding up your second week payment though. When you reported your UberEats earnings, it triggered a review. They need to determine if your gig work constitutes full self-employment (which would disqualify you) or just part-time earnings that would reduce your weekly benefit amount. The fact that you stopped doing deliveries altogether might actually help your case going forward. Keep filing your weekly claims while this resolves, and make sure you're completing your required 3 job search activities each week and documenting them correctly.

Thank you - that's a relief about the waiting week. Do you know how long the adjudication process for self-employment usually takes? I've been faithfully doing my 3 job search activities each week and documenting everything.

6 WEEKS??? Oh no, I can't wait that long! Did you keep delivering during that time or just stop completely?

I went through something similar with my Etsy shop. The issue is that when you report self-employment income, ESD has to determine: 1. Whether you're "able and available" for full-time work (since self-employed people typically control their own hours) 2. If your gig work constitutes a regular job or just side income 3. How to properly deduct your earnings from your benefit amount In my situation, I had to participate in a phone interview with an adjudicator. They asked about how many hours I worked, whether I could accept full-time work if offered, and details about my job search. The whole process took about 3-4 weeks before they made a determination. If you've already completely stopped the gig work, make sure to emphasize that in any communication with ESD. Also, keep detailed records of all your job search activities - they might ask for this documentation later.

That's really helpful information. I've definitely stopped all gig work completely. Did they ever contact you to schedule the interview, or did they just call randomly? I'm afraid of missing their call.

They sent me a letter in the mail with the date and approximate time window for the phone interview (like "between 1-3pm"). But that was 2 years ago - not sure if their process has changed. Make sure your contact info is up to date in your ESD account, and check your correspondence inbox there too, not just your email.

ESD is such garbage!! They probably won't pay u for MONTHS. I was in adjudication for 11 WEEKS last year for something similar. They don't care if u can't pay bills or buy food. The system is designed to make people give up.

11 weeks?? That's terrifying. Did you ever get your money, or did they just deny you in the end?

I eventually got paid but they reduced my weekly amount because of the side work I did. So frustrating that trying to make ANY money while waiting for them hurts you in the end. The whole system is broken.

Quick recommendation - if you need to actually speak with someone at ESD about your adjudication status, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an ESD agent when I was stuck in a similar situation. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Basically, they wait on hold for you and call you when an agent picks up. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of frustration when I was dealing with an adjudication issue related to my previous freelance work. The agent I spoke with was able to expedite my claim review.

Thank you for this tip! I've been trying to get through for days with no luck. I'll check this out - at this point I'd try anything to get some answers about my claim.

i tried calling them 27 times in 2 days before i finally got someone. wish i knew about this service before!!

I want to share what I learned from a similar situation. First, yes, that first week disqualification is your waiting week - everyone has to serve one waiting week per benefit year before payments begin. Regarding the self-employment issue, here's what matters: • If your gig work was less than 17 hours per week and you were still available for full-time regular employment, you should still qualify for partial benefits • You need to report all earnings including tips from the week you performed the work (not when you got paid) • They'll deduct a portion of your earnings from your weekly benefit amount The adjudication could take 3-6 weeks based on current ESD timelines. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this time, accurately reporting any work/earnings, and documenting your 3 job search activities per week. Also important: when you eventually talk to ESD, make it very clear that your delivery gigs were temporary stop-gap measures while you sought regular employment, not your primary occupation.

Thank you for this detailed information! I definitely worked less than 17 hours per week on deliveries and was actively seeking full-time work the entire time. I've been keeping meticulous records of my job search activities and claiming every week. Fingers crossed they resolve this soon.

wait i'm confused... isn't the waiting week supposed to be unpaid but not 'disqualified'? thats different from being denied, right? when mine said disqualified it was becus I did something wrong on my claim

You're right that there's a technical difference between "disqualified" and "waiting week" - however, some people see "disqualified" on their first week and panic, not realizing it's actually just their waiting week. The ESD system is not always clear with its status labels. What usually happens is the first eligible week ends up being your waiting week (which shows as not paid/disqualified), and then payments should start with the second eligible week - assuming there are no other issues like the adjudication the original poster mentioned.

ohh that makes sense. the ESD website is so confusing sometimes. thx for explaining!

Has anyone tried emailing your state representative about ESD issues? When my claim was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks last year, I finally emailed my district rep with my claim details and they actually helped push it through within a week. Might be worth a try if you're really desperate about rent.

That's a great idea I hadn't considered. How do I find out who my representative is? And did you just email them directly explaining your situation?

Go to leg.wa.gov and enter your address to find your district rep. I emailed all three of mine explaining my situation, how long I'd been waiting, and how it was affecting my ability to pay rent and bills. One of their assistants got back to me within 2 days and contacted ESD on my behalf. Can't guarantee it'll work every time but worth trying!

One more important thing to mention - make sure you're still doing and documenting your job search activities every week, even during adjudication. If they eventually approve your claim, they'll check that you've been meeting the job search requirements for all those weeks. I've seen people get approved after weeks of waiting only to discover they can't get paid for certain weeks because they didn't keep up with their job search requirements during the wait.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been diligently searching and keeping records of all my 3+ activities each week. I just hope they sort this out soon because I'm getting really anxious about bills coming due.
