ESD weekly claim question: Starting new job Monday, is tomorrow my last filing date?
Just landed a full-time position (finally!) after 4 months on unemployment. I start Monday morning. According to my calendar, tomorrow would be my regular weekly claim filing day. Is tomorrow actually my last filing, or can I file next week for this partial week? I worked zero hours this week. I'm confused about the timing since I keep reading different things about 'working full-time' vs 'starting work' and when exactly to stop claiming benefits. Don't want to accidentally commit fraud or leave money on the table that I'm entitled to. Thanks for any clarification!

•Thanks! So I file tomorrow for this week (where I didn't work at all), and then next Sunday I'd file again but report the hours I worked Mon-Sat? That makes sense.

You'll need to report for this week since you didn't work any hours. Then next week you'll report your hours worked for Monday-Saturday. Since you're starting full-time, that week will likely be your last eligible claim because your earnings will exceed your weekly benefit amount. Make sure you answer the question about returning to full-time work correctly on both claims. The system will automatically calculate any partial benefits if you're eligible.

•This is not entirely accurate. The question about returning to full-time work should be answered YES on the claim you file AFTER you've actually started working full-time. So for tomorrow's claim, the answer would be NO since OP hasn't started working yet. For next week's claim, the answer would be YES since they will have started the job.

•You're right - I should have been clearer. On tomorrow's claim (for the week with no work), the return to full-time work question should be answered NO. On next week's claim (after starting the job), that question should be answered YES. Thanks for the correction!

I went through this exact same scenario in February!!! So confusing right? Here's what happened with me: filed my normal weekly claim the Sunday before starting my job (for the previous week where I didn't work). Then filed ONE MORE claim the following Sunday where I reported my work hours for my first week. That was my last claim. The system automatically reduced my benefit based on what I earned. Don't forget to update your work search activities for both weeks!!!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! Super helpful to hear from someone who's been through it. I'll definitely keep up with my job search activities for this week's claim.

The other commenters are correct. You should file your weekly claim tomorrow for this week since you haven't worked any hours. Then next week, you'll file for the week where you started working, reporting all hours and wages earned. ESD will automatically calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits based on your earnings compared to your weekly benefit amount. One important note: when you file next week, you'll be asked if you've returned to full-time work. Answer YES to this question since you will have started your full-time job. Also, even though you've found work, you still need to list 3 job search activities for this week's claim. If you have trouble getting through to ESD to verify anything, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get through to an actual ESD agent when I had questions about my final claim after starting a new job. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've struggled to reach ESD agents directly in the past, so I might check out that service if I run into any issues with these final claims.

BE CAREFUL!!!!! ESD is super picky about this stuff and will hit you with an overpayment if you mess up. My cousin got a $2,300 overpayment bill because he answered the full-time work question wrong. Make sure you answer NO tomorrow (since you haven't started yet) and YES next week (after you've started). And keep all your paystubs from the new job in case they ask for verification later. They randomly audit people all the time!

•omg thats rough! did ur cousin have to pay it all back?

•Yeah he did! They took it out of his tax refund the next year when he couldn't pay it all at once. ESD doesn't mess around with that stuff.

To clarify what others have said: 1. File tomorrow for this week (where you worked 0 hours) 2. File next Sunday for your first partial work week 3. Answer the "returned to full-time work" question as NO on tomorrow's claim 4. Answer the "returned to full-time work" question as YES on next week's claim 5. Report all hours and wages accurately on next week's claim 6. Continue completing 3 job search activities until your very last claim ESD calculates your eligibility for partial benefits using this formula: If your gross earnings for the week are less than 1.33 times your weekly benefit amount, you may receive partial benefits. The system automatically makes this calculation based on what you report. Congratulations on your new position!

•Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! This really helps me understand exactly what to do for these final claims.
