ESD weekly claim question: Do I report job before first paycheck?
I just landed a full-time job (finally!) and I'm starting this Thursday. I'm supposed to file my weekly unemployment claim on Sunday and I'm confused about what to do. Do I need to report that I've started working even though I won't get paid until the following week? If I do report it, does that mean I won't get any benefits payment on Monday? I really need this last payment to cover rent since my first paycheck won't come for 2 weeks. Anyone dealt with this before?

You absolutely need to report that you're working starting Thursday, regardless of when you get paid. You report work when you PERFORM it, not when you get paid for it. ESD will calculate partial benefits for the days you weren't working (Sunday-Wednesday), so you should still get something on Monday, just not the full amount.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So I'll still get something for the 3 days I'm not working? That's a relief. I was worried I'd have to somehow stretch my last full payment for 2 weeks until that first paycheck comes in.

You have to report when you work! My friend thought she could wait till she got paid and she ended up with an overpayment notice and had to pay back everything plus penalties. NOT worth it!

•Yikes! I definitely don't want that to happen. Thanks for the warning. I'll make sure to report my work hours even though I haven't been paid yet.

As others have said, you need to report when you START working, not when you get paid. But here's what you need to know about how this works with ESD: 1. When filing your weekly claim, you'll report the days worked and exact hours each day 2. ESD will calculate your partial benefit based on these hours 3. You'll likely get about 4/7 of your weekly benefit amount (for the 4 days you weren't working) 4. This payment will still come on your regular payment day Be very precise about your hours. If you work 8 hours on Thursday, 8 hours on Friday, and 0 hours on the weekend, report exactly that. Don't round up or down.

•I went through this last year and would add one thing - if you work even 1 hour on a day, you have to count that as a working day. So be sure to count the exact number of hours but also the exact number of days.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LIE TO ESD!!! They compare notes with employers and will find out eventually that you worked before you reported it. Then you'll be on the hook for fraud and have to pay everything back PLUS penalties!!! Not worth it for one extra week. I've seen people get hit with $10,000+ overpayments because they thought they could game the system.

•I definitely don't want to commit fraud! I was just confused about the timing, not trying to hide anything. I'll report my work starting Thursday even though I won't get paid yet.

I had a similar situation when I found a job back in February. I reported my work hours starting on my first day, even though I hadn't been paid yet. One thing to note - you'll want to call ESD if your online weekly claim shows any errors or flags after you submit it with the work hours. The online system sometimes gets confused with partial weeks. I had trouble getting through to ESD on the phone though. After trying for days and getting hung up on, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Totally worth it to make sure my final payment went through correctly.

So did you get the job through WorkSource? I'm still looking and getting desperate...

•No, I found it through a friend who works at the company. But I've heard WorkSource has some decent leads especially for entry-level office jobs. Good luck with your search!

One more thing to keep in mind - after you report your work hours for this week, you should continue filing weekly claims until you receive your first full paycheck. This ensures there's no gap in your claim if something happens with the new job (like if it falls through during training or probation period). If you're working full-time hours, your weekly claims will show $0 benefit once you're working all days in the week, but keeping your claim active is important just in case. Once you're established at the new job and have received a couple of paychecks, then you can stop filing altogether.

•That's really smart advice! I hadn't thought about continuing to file even with $0 benefits. I'll keep filing for a few more weeks until I'm sure everything is stable with the new job.
