Started work mid-week - Do I file ESD claim for partial unemployment?
I finally landed a job (yay!) and started working last Thursday. I was on unemployment for about 3 months before this. I'm confused about whether I should still file my weekly claim for last week since I only worked 2 days. Do I report those 2 days worked and the income, or just stop filing completely now that I have a job? I don't want to accidentally commit fraud, but also don't want to leave money on the table if I'm entitled to partial benefits for those first 3 days I wasn't working. Anyone know how this works?

Yes, you should definitely file for that week and report your earnings! ESD allows partial unemployment benefits when you work less than full-time hours. Report the exact hours you worked and your gross earnings (before taxes). The system will automatically calculate if you're eligible for a partial payment based on their formula. Just make sure you're accurate about your start date and earnings. Congrats on the new job!

•Thank you! Do you know how much I can earn before they cut off benefits completely? My weekly benefit amount is $790.

ALWAYS FILE until they tell you to stop!!! I made the mistake of not filing when I started part-time work and REGRETTED IT. You're entitled to partial benefits when you work less than full time. They deduct a percentage of what you earn from your weekly benefit. The ESD system is designed to handle this EXACT situation.

•This. And be super precise about reporting - the DATE you started, EXACT hours, and GROSS pay (not net). ESD audits a lot and you dont want them coming back at you for an overpayment later.

•Yep me too when i started my new job last month i filed that week but then stopped the next week. You just put down your hours and they figure out the rest.

I think it depends on how much you made those 2 days... if you made more than your weekly benefit amount then there's no point in filing. But if you made less, then you might get something. The formula they use is weird though. I believe they subtract 25% of your wba from your earnings, then subtract that from your wba? Something like that...

•You're close. The formula is: If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount (WBA), ESD will subtract 25% of what you earned from your WBA. So if your WBA is $790 and you earned $500, they'd subtract $125 (25% of $500) from $790, giving you a partial payment of $665. But if you earn more than your WBA, you won't receive benefits for that week.

I went through this exact situation back in October. You absolutely should file for that week. Here's how it works: 1. File your weekly claim as normal 2. When it asks if you worked, say YES 3. Enter the exact hours you worked on each day 4. Report your gross earnings (before taxes) 5. Answer the other questions truthfully (like if you were able and available to work the other days) If your earnings are low enough, you'll get a partial unemployment payment. If your earnings exceed your weekly benefit amount, you'll get $0 for that week but it's still important to file to properly close out your claim. If you need help checking your claim status or have questions about how much you might receive, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent quickly. Their video demo shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - saved me hours of frustration when I needed to sort out my final payments.

•Thank you for all the details! This is really helpful. I'll make sure to file my claim today and report everything correctly. Has anyone had issues with the system accepting partial week claims? Just want to be prepared.

When I started my job last year my sister-in-law who works in HR told me that I should file for that partial week but then I forgot and it was too late lol. Make sure you do it within the filing window or you'll lose out like I did!

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! I went ahead and filed my weekly claim, reported my work start date, hours, and earnings. The system accepted it without any issues. Since I only made about $320 for those two days (and my WBA is $790), it looks like I'll get a partial payment. The confirmation page showed an estimated payment of $710, which makes sense based on the formula someone explained. Really appreciate all the help!

•Great! And don't forget that once you've been at your new job for a full week, you don't need to formally "close" your claim - just stop filing weekly claims and ESD will automatically close it after a few weeks. Keep the information for your claim handy though, in case you need to reopen it within the benefit year.
