PA UC question: Returning to partial work schedule - how to handle final weekly claim?

Just found out my boss wants me back at work starting tomorrow, but only for 2 days this week (Thursday and Friday). I've been claiming UC benefits for about 2 months after my hours got cut completely. I'm confused about what to do with my unemployment now. Do I just stop filing my weekly claims completely? Can I still file this Sunday since I'm only working 2 days instead of my normal 5-day schedule? I don't want to mess anything up or get accused of fraud. My supervisor literally just called me an hour ago saying to come in tomorrow. Any advice appreciated!

You should definitely still file this Sunday! Report the exact hours and wages you earned for Thursday and Friday. Since you're working reduced hours (partial employment), you might still qualify for a partial benefit payment. The system will calculate if you're eligible based on your reported earnings. Just be 100% accurate with your hours/wages when you file.

Thank you! I wasn't sure if I should file at all. So I just enter the hours/wages for the 2 days I work, and they'll figure out if I get anything? Will my claim stay open even if I don't get a payment this week?

This is actually a common situation. You need to keep filing your weekly claims and report ANY earnings for the week (including your 2 days of work). PA UC has a partial benefit calculation where you can earn up to 30% of your weekly benefit amount without reduction, then they deduct anything over that amount from your benefit payment. Your claim stays open for a year from when you first applied (your "benefit year"), so you can start and stop claiming as your work schedule changes.

this is correct! i was on partial UC last year when my hours got cut. just make sure u report GROSS earnings (before taxes) not what u actually take home. they will disqualify u if u report the wrong amount

Do you know if your reduced schedule is temporary or permanent? That matters too. If it's just for this week, definitely file. If you're going back full-time next week, you still file for this week but would stop after that.

My boss said they're hoping to get me back to full-time soon but couldn't promise anything yet. He just had enough work for me for two days this week. I guess I'll keep filing until I'm back to full time? This is all so confusing!

I went through EXACTLY the same thing last year. The PA UC system is actually designed to handle partial employment. File your weekly claim and when it asks if you worked, say YES. Then enter your gross wages (before deductions) for the days you worked. If you earn too much, you'll get $0 for that week, but your claim stays open. If your hours drop again next week, you can still claim. The important thing is to KEEP FILING each week you work reduced hours. Once you return to full-time, then you stop filing.

I don't think that's right... I thought once you start working again AT ALL you have to file a new claim if you need benefits again? The system is so confusing and the website doesn't explain anything clearly!!

No, that's not correct. Your UC claim remains open for your entire benefit year (12 months from when you first filed). You only file a new claim if your benefit year expires. You can work part-time and still file weekly claims, reporting your earnings. The system calculates if you get partial benefits. Only when you return to full-time regular work would you stop filing completely.

This is 100% accurate - as someone who deals with on-and-off work in construction. You keep your same claim open and just report earnings each week. Some weeks I get partial benefits, some weeks I earn too much and get $0, but my claim stays open the whole time.

If you're having trouble reaching PA UC to ask questions about your specific situation, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with part-time work and needed to speak to someone. Used their service at claimyr.com and they got me connected to a UC rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Worth it when you have specific questions about partial employment and reporting wages.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if I have more questions after I file this Sunday. It would be nice to actually talk to someone instead of just guessing what to do.

dont 4get that if ur still doing work search activities those 3 days ur not working u still gotta enter those in ur weekly claim!!! even with partial work u still need work search activities for weeks u claim!!!

0 coins

Oh no, I didn't even think about that! I have to do job search activities for the days I'm not working? Even though I technically have a job now?

Actually, since you've been recalled by your employer and are technically employed (even if part-time), you should check the box that says you've been recalled by your employer when filing. In most cases, this exempts you from the work search requirements. But to be 100% sure about your specific situation, you might want to contact UC directly.

That's a huge relief! I'll look for that option when I file on Sunday. Thank you so much for all this help!

Something similar happened to my cousin, he got called back but just for Thursdays & they kept giving him different answers about what to do with his claim. The unemployment system is such a JOKE!! They make everything 100X more complicated than it needs to be!!

Tell me about it! I spent 3 weeks trying to get someone on the phone about my part-time work situation and kept getting disconnected. It's like they design the system to be frustrating on purpose.

To summarize what you need to do: 1. Continue filing your weekly claim this Sunday 2. Report that you worked and enter your gross wages 3. Indicate you've been recalled by your employer 4. Keep filing weekly claims as long as you're working reduced hours 5. Only stop filing when you return to full-time work And remember, always be accurate with your reported earnings - UC can verify your wages with your employer, and discrepancies could lead to overpayment issues later.

This is super helpful - thank you for laying it out so clearly! I'll follow these steps exactly when I file on Sunday. Fingers crossed I get back to full-time soon, but it's good to know how to handle things in the meantime.
