Starting new job tomorrow - do I need to notify NY unemployment or just stop claiming?
Just got a full time job that starts tomorrow and I'm not sure what to do with my unemployment claims. Should I just stop claiming entirely, or do I need to file one more time next Sunday and tell them I've gone back to work? I don't want to mess anything up or get in trouble for not following the right procedure. Anyone know what the proper protocol is? Thanks for any help!

You should definitely file one more time and report that you've gone back to work. When you certify next week, it'll ask if you worked, just say yes and report how many days/hours. That way NY unemployment has a record that you're employed now and they'll stop your benefits properly.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So I just report the days worked on my next certification. Appreciate the help!

•This is right. I did the same when I got my job last month. Makes sure everything is closed out properly in their system.

After months of dealing with ny unemployment, I finally was able to reach someone by using claimyr.com - it called for me and got me to a real person who helped sort out all my questions about returning to work. It was the best money I've ever spent to get my benefits sorted correctly. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•How does this work exactly? I've been trying to call for weeks and can't get through.

•It basically calls for you and stays on hold, then alerts you when a real person picks up. Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold.

•sounds like one of those internet scams...does it actually work or just take your money? 🤔

•It's not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but it actually connected me with an agent who answered all my questions about stopping benefits when starting work. You don't have to give them any personal info - they just do the calling part.

You HAVE TO do one more certification and tell them your back to work. If you dont they'll think your still unemployed and might flag your account later for fraud or something. Better to close it out right.

congrats on the new job! 🎉 def do one more claim and just be honest about your work status. thats what the weekly certification is for.

I work for a staffing agency and we see this ALL THE TIME. Many people just stop certifying when they get a job and later get noticed about overpayments or worse. Always make sure you report that you've gone back to work on your next certification, and if you worked partial days before starting full time, report those accurately too.

•Can confirm - my cousin didn't properly close his claim and ended up owing money back. Not worth the hassle.

The NY unemployment system is such a mess 🤦♀️ When I started working last year I called 27 times trying to figure out what to do. Nobody picked up. I ended up just certifying one more time and saying I was employed. System closed my claim after that.

Here's exactly what to do: 1) Continue certifying for benefits next week as usual 2) When it asks if you've worked during the week, select YES 3) Enter the days you worked (probably all 5 if full-time M-F) 4) Enter your gross earnings before deductions 5) Answer 'yes' when it asks if you've returned to work full-time The system will automatically process this as your final claim. You might get partial payment for any days you didn't work this week, but then your claim will close out properly. If you have any issues or special circumstances, I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to an actual representative who can help with your specific situation. When I had questions about transitioning back to work, I wasted days trying to call before using their service to finally get through to someone who could help. Congratulations on your new job and good luck!

•Thank you for spelling it out so clearly! This is exactly what I needed to know.

•This is the right answer - I work in HR and this is what we tell all our new hires who were on unemployment.

DON'T JUST STOP CLAIMING!!! That's how people end up with fraud investigations later! Always always always close your claim properly by doing one final certification.

random but kinda related question - what happens if ur job is only part time? do u still get some benefits?

•Yeah, you can get partial benefits if you work less than 4 days and earn under a certain amount. You just report what you earned each week.

OMG the amount of conflicting advice on here lol. Look, I just called ny unemployment literally yesterday using claimyr.com to jump the phone queue, and the agent told me specifically: you MUST do a final certification, report your work days, and that closes your claim properly. Done and done.

I got hit with an overpayment notice cause I didn't tell them I went back to work. Took 3 months to get it sorted out. Don't make the same mistake!

The most comprehensive resource I've found on NY unemployment issues is actually their handbook. Check page 31 for the section on returning to work. Says you must report when you start working: https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment-insurance-claimant-handbook
