ESD weekly claim confusion - reported retirement change but no amount field

I'm really confused about my weekly claim certification. When filing this week, there was a question asking if there was any change in my retirement income and I answered 'yes' because I received a small distribution of $220. But then the system never asked me to enter the amount! Now I'm worried about how ESD will calculate my benefits. Will they just guess? Could my payment be delayed? Has anyone else run into this weird glitch with the weekly claim questions? Do I need to call them to report the amount or will they contact me?

the same thing happened to me last month! I was so confused but then they sent me a questionnaire through my eServices account about 3 days later asking for the details. Just keep checking your online account

Oh thank goodness it's not just me! I'll keep an eye on my eServices messages. How long did your payment take to process after you filled out the questionnaire?

This is a standard part of the process. After you mark 'yes' to a change in retirement income, ESD's system flags your claim for what they call a 'fact-finding' review. They'll either send you a questionnaire through eServices or call you directly to get the details about your retirement income. The system is designed this way because they need to calculate the correct deduction based on the specific type of retirement income (401k withdrawal, pension, etc.) and whether it's from a base period employer. In the meantime, continue filing your weekly claims as normal. Your payments might be temporarily held until they get this information, but they'll be retroactively paid once the issue is resolved.

That makes sense. I just wish they'd warn you that there would be follow-up questions later instead of making me think I missed something. Do you know roughly how long the fact-finding review usually takes?

I've been through this exact situation. The fact-finding questionnaire should come within a week. Make sure you respond to it immediately because your payments won't process until you do. Also, keep in mind that some types of retirement distributions might not affect your benefits, depending on whether they're from a base period employer and the type of distribution. If you don't get a questionnaire within 7 days, you should definitely call ESD. Their phone lines are terrible though. I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes when I was dealing with a similar issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Better to address this sooner than later because resolving retirement income questions can take time.

Yeah I had to call about this last year and spent 3 days trying to get through! Wish I'd known about that service.

my neighbor told me retirement only counts if its from the job you claiming unemployment from is that true?????

Your neighbor is partially correct. Retirement income only affects your unemployment benefits if it comes from a "base period employer" - meaning an employer you worked for during your base year (typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you applied for unemployment). If your retirement income is from an employer you worked for before your base period, it shouldn't affect your benefits. This is why ESD needs to gather specific information rather than just the amount.

OMG the ESD system is SO BROKEN!!! I had this happen and they never sent the questionnaire and then DISQUALIFIED me saying I didn't provide info!!! Had to appeal and it took MONTHS to fix!!! Document EVERYTHING and take screenshots!!

That's terrifying! I'm taking screenshots of everything now. Did you eventually get all your back payments after the appeal?

YES but it took FOREVER!!! 14 weeks of waiting and calling and being hung up on!!! The system is designed to make people give up!!

I should clarify something important about your retirement distribution. If it's a one-time distribution of $220 from a retirement account that's not from a base period employer (as you mentioned it's from 6 years ago), there's a good chance it won't affect your benefits at all. The key factors ESD considers are: 1. Is it from a base period employer? (In your case, no) 2. Is it regular pension/retirement income or a one-time withdrawal? (One-time distributions are treated differently) 3. Did you contribute to the retirement plan or was it entirely employer-funded? Make sure you explain clearly in the questionnaire that this was a one-time small distribution from a non-base period employer. That should minimize any impact on your benefits.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I received the questionnaire this morning and made sure to specify exactly what you mentioned. Such a relief to understand how the system works!
