ESD underpaid my benefit - got $5 instead of $173 weekly payment

Something weird just happened with my weekly claim payment. I checked my bank account this morning and saw ESD only deposited $5.00 when I should have gotten $173 for my weekly benefit amount! Has anyone else had this happen? I double-checked my claim status on eServices and everything shows as "paid" for the correct amount, but what actually landed in my account is just $5. Could this be some kind of calculation error or deduction I don't know about? I'm freaking out a bit because I need that money for rent next week. Should I call ESD about this or wait to see if the rest comes through later?

they probably took money out for overpayment... check if you have any notices in your eservices account. they been doing this alot lately

I don't see any overpayment notices in my account. Everything looks normal except for the amount that was actually deposited. This is so frustrating!

Check if you have any child support withholding or tax deductions. They usually show up on your payment detail page. Also, if you reported any earnings last week, they might have calculated the reduction incorrectly. You definitely need to call ESD about this - the sooner the better!

I don't have any child support orders and I already chose to have taxes withheld (which is already factored into my $173 weekly amount). I didn't report any earnings last week either since I'm still completely unemployed. It's so weird!

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me back in January!!!! I got a tiny payment of like $12 when it should have been $215. I spent FOUR DAYS trying to reach someone at ESD and kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. When I finally got through, they said it was a "system calculation error" and they had to manually correct it. They fixed it but it took another week to get the rest of my money. THE WORST!

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. I can't wait another week for this money. Did they at least pay you the rest without you having to file a formal appeal or anything?

The banking system messes up sometimes too. Are you sure it's not just a partial deposit and the rest might come separately? Sometimes my bank shows deposits in weird ways.

This happened to my roommate and it wasn't the bank - it was definitely ESD's system. They're having all kinds of glitches lately with the new software update they did in March. You absolutely need to call them!!!

This is most likely an administrative error on ESD's part. When you check your payment details in eServices, look at the "Payment Summary" section - it should show the full calculation breakdown including your gross benefit amount, any deductions, and the net payment amount. If this shows the correct $173 but you only received $5, then there's a discrepancy that needs to be resolved by contacting ESD directly. Two possibilities: 1. There was a banking/processing error and the remainder will appear separately 2. There was a calculation error in their system that needs manual correction Either way, you should contact ESD immediately. Document everything - take screenshots of your payment details page showing the expected amount, save any confirmation emails, and note the date/time of the deposit you received.

Thank you! I just checked the Payment Summary and it does show the full $173 should have been paid. Definitely seems like an error on their end. I've been trying to call all morning but can't get through - just endless busy signals or the automated system disconnects me.

I had this same problem last month and it turned out they had applied a garnishment to my account without proper notification! Check your correspondence tab for any letters about garnishments. Even if there's nothing there, you need to call ESD ASAP. I had to call over 60 times before I got through to someone who could help me. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes instead of calling hundreds of times. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to someone, they fixed the problem right away and released the rest of my payment. Don't wait on this - every day matters when you need your benefits!

Thank you for the tip about Claimyr! I'm going to check out that video right now. I've been calling nonstop this morning and it's driving me crazy. I checked the correspondence tab and don't see anything about garnishments, so it must be some kind of system error.

Does that service really work? Seems kinda sketchy to pay someone just to call ESD. Can't you just keep trying yourself?

Trust me, after calling 60+ times over 3 days, I would have paid anything to get through. It worked for me and saved me hours of frustration. Way better than missing rent because you can't get your benefit issue fixed.

Just checking back - were you able to get through to ESD? What did they say about the $5 payment?

Yes! I used that Claimyr service and got through to ESD this afternoon. The agent told me there was a calculation error in their system that affected about 230 claims this week! They're manually correcting all of them and said I should see the remaining $168 deposited within 48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! This is the third post I've seen this week about payment errors. How are people supposed to survive when ESD can't even pay the right amounts?? And you can never reach anyone there! I'm still waiting for backpay from FEBRUARY!!!! 😡😡😡

While frustrating, it's important to note that these system errors affect a small percentage of claims. When you do encounter issues, document everything carefully and be persistent in reaching out. For backpay issues specifically, you may want to contact your state representative as they can sometimes help expedite resolution of long-standing claims.
