ESD says I have to wait TWO MONTHS for payment - about to be evicted!
I'm completely desperate at this point. Filed for unemployment 5 weeks ago and still NOTHING. Finally got through to an ESD agent yesterday (miracle!) only to be told I need to wait TWO MORE MONTHS before I'll see any money!!! Their reason? "We're busy." That's it. Just "we're busy." They literally told me the ONLY way they'd expedite my claim is if I'm actively being evicted. So basically they want me to wait until I'm homeless before they'll help?? I've already burned through my savings. Rent is due again in 2 weeks. I've called Governor Inslee's office and just got sent to voicemail. Left THREE messages, no callback. How is this even legal?? What am I supposed to do for TWO MONTHS with no income? Has anyone else been told they have to wait this long? Did you actually get paid when they said you would? Any advice before I completely lose it?

•9 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did you have to do anything special to finally get paid or did it just randomly show up one day?

The 8-week timeframe is unfortunately common right now with the current ESD backlog. They're prioritizing claims based on hardship levels, which is why they mentioned eviction status. What you should do immediately: 1. File for hardship consideration - there's a form on the ESD website under "Contact Us" where you can explain your financial situation 2. Document ALL communications with ESD (dates, names, what was said) 3. Contact your state representative (not just the governor's office) - they often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with ESD issues 4. Make sure your weekly claims are still being filed on time despite the wait 5. Check if you qualify for emergency assistance through DSHS while waiting Let me know if you need help finding any of these resources.

•Thank you so much! I didn't know about the hardship form - just found it and submitted it with details about my situation. And great idea about contacting my state rep instead of the governor's office. I'll try that tomorrow. I've definitely been keeping up with my weekly claims even though nothing's happening with them.

I was in adjucation for 11 weeks last fall!!! Its totaly broken system!! They told me same thing about eviction. Try going to WorkSource office in person sometimes they can help faster than phone calls.

The "we're busy" excuse without providing specifics about your claim status is unacceptable. There's a difference between general processing delays and having a claim stuck in adjudication or pending identity verification. Do you know what specific status your claim is in? Is it in adjudication, pending ID verification, or something else? This matters because the approach to resolving it differs based on the actual hold-up. I went through this last year and discovered my claim was held up not because they were "busy" but because there was an unresolved issue with my identity verification that nobody bothered to tell me about. Once I knew what the actual problem was, I could address it directly.

•They told me it's in "adjudication" but wouldn't tell me what issue they're adjudicating! I provided all my ID docs when I applied. When I asked what the problem was, the agent just kept repeating they're backlogged and I need to wait. Super frustrating when they won't even tell you what's wrong so you can fix it!

I had a similar situation where ESD kept me waiting for nearly 7 weeks. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent who could help. They have a system that keeps calling ESD for you until they get through, then connects you. Saved me hours of redial hell. There's a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 When I finally got connected, I specifically asked for a tier 2 agent who could see what was actually holding up my claim, not just the frontline people who give generic answers. Turns out there was a simple issue they could resolve right then, and my payments started the next week. Definitely worth trying before you hit crisis point with rent.

•Yes, it absolutely worked for me! The key is asking for that tier 2 agent when you get through. They have much more ability to actually fix issues than the first person who answers.

THEY'RE ALL LIARS!! I waited 12 weeks and they kept saying 2 more weeks every time I called. It's a SCAM to make people give up. Keep calling EVERY DAY and demand to speak to a supervisor. The regular agents are useless and just read from scripts. The system is designed to frustrate people into giving up!!

•Did you eventually get paid? I'm worried they're just stringing me along and I'll never see the money...

•Yes but only after I threatened to call my lawyer and mentioned filing a complaint with the state auditor. Suddenly they found my money! FUNNY HOW THAT WORKS.

From my experience working with ESD claims (I used to work as an employment counselor), claims in adjudication generally fall into a few categories that determine wait times: - Simple verification issues: 3-4 weeks - Employer disputes: 6-8 weeks - Complex eligibility issues: 8-12 weeks The key is finding out WHICH category your claim falls into. When you call, specifically ask: "What is the exact issue that has my claim in adjudication?" and "Is there any additional information I can provide to resolve this issue faster?" While waiting, make sure you're documenting your financial hardship. If you're at risk of missing rent, utility shutoffs, or other essential payments, get documentation of those threats. This creates the paper trail needed for true hardship expediting. Also, don't forget to check your ESD portal and secure message center daily. Sometimes they request additional info but don't call you about it - and if you miss those messages, it just extends the delay.

•Thank you! This is super helpful. I'll call tomorrow and use those exact questions to try to get more specific information. I've been checking my portal every day but haven't seen any requests - just the same "adjudication in progress" status with no details.

anyone know if i can apply for food stamps while waiting for unemployment to come thru?? im in the same boat, week 6 of waiting...

•Yes, absolutely! You can and should apply for food benefits through DSHS while waiting. Your pending unemployment status actually makes you potentially eligible for expedited food benefits (you could get them within 7 days). Apply online at washingtonconnection.org or visit your local DSHS office.

I've been following this thread and wanted to check if you've made any progress? One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is requesting an official "hardship review" - this is different from just mentioning financial hardship. Call ESD and specifically say: "I need to request a formal hardship review for my claim due to imminent financial crisis." This triggers a specific process where they're required to evaluate your case within 48 hours. Also, when calling, try early morning (7:30-8:00am) or late afternoon (3:30-4:00pm) as these tend to have slightly shorter wait times. If using their callback feature, make sure your voicemail isn't full and your phone accepts calls from private/unknown numbers. Have you tried any of these approaches yet?

•Update: I finally got some movement on my claim! I tried the formal hardship review request like you suggested, and also used Claimyr to get through to an actual person. Got connected to a tier 2 specialist who found the issue - apparently my former employer disputed my hours (even though I reported them correctly). The agent put in an expedite request based on my hardship documentation and said I should see a determination within 7-10 days instead of the original 2 months! Still not immediate, but WAY better than before. Thank you everyone for all the advice - this forum has been so helpful when I was feeling completely lost in the ESD maze.
