ESD claim status changed from 'adjudication in progress' to 'active' after 5 days - is that normal?

I'm totally confused about my claim status right now. I filed for unemployment just 5 days ago after being laid off from my warehouse position. Yesterday when I checked my eServices account, my claim status showed 'adjudication in progress' which I thought meant they were reviewing my case. But today when I logged in, it suddenly says 'active'! That seems WAY too fast compared to what I've heard from others. I haven't received any messages or emails from ESD, and no interview or phone calls happened. Did they actually make a decision this quickly? Or is this just some glitch in the system that's going to get my hopes up for nothing? Has anyone else seen their status change this quickly? I'm worried about getting my hopes up only to have them tell me later there was a mistake.

When the status changes from "adjudication in progress" to "active," it usually means they've made a determination in your favor. This is actually becoming more common since ESD upgraded their systems in late 2024. Many straightforward cases are being processed much faster now. If your separation was clear-cut (like a documented layoff with no disputes from your employer), they sometimes waive the full adjudication process. I'd check if there's a monetary determination letter in your ESD inbox. That would confirm if you've been approved.

Thanks for the info! I just checked and there IS a monetary determination letter that got posted today. It shows my weekly benefit amount and everything. Does this mean I'm definitely approved and can start filing weekly claims? I'm still nervous because everything happened so fast!

Oh great, now I'm worried again. Did you get any indication why they needed an interview after initially making it active? My separation was pretty straightforward - the whole department got cut.

The "active" status is a good sign, but it doesn't guarantee your claim is fully approved. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Your monetary eligibility was automatically determined (do you have a monetary determination letter?) 2. The system may have flagged your claim as low-risk for initial benefit payments 3. You can start filing weekly claims while any remaining issues are resolved However, ESD can still raise issues later that could trigger adjudication. I recommend filing your weekly claims as required, reporting any work/earnings accurately, and completing your job search activities. Keep checking your ESD account daily for any new messages or status changes.

yah this is what happened to me... got to file for like 3 weeks and then BOOM they wanted to interview me about why i left my job even tho i was laid off. system is so broken

SAME THING just happened to my girlfriend! She applied last week, saw adjudication for like 2 days, then suddenly active. She got paid for her first weekly claim already. I think ESD might be trying to speed up obvious approvals because they got SO MUCH backlash for the delays during COVID. Just be careful to do all your job searches and report them correctly!!! They're super strict about that now.

This is a good observation. ESD has been making significant improvements to their initial processing times. The key is whether the employer contests the claim. If they don't, and it's a straightforward layoff, the automated system can approve claims much faster now. The 3 job search activities per week requirement is definitely being enforced rigorously though!

UGH i'm on week 8 of adjudication! why do some people get approved instantly while others wait forever??? the whole system is completely RANDOM and unfair!

It's not random - it depends on your specific circumstances and whether your employer contests the claim. Have you tried contacting ESD directly? I was stuck in adjudication for weeks until I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They have this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent cleared up a miscommunication with my employer and my claim was approved the next day. Might be worth trying if you've been waiting that long.

I feel like I should point out that "active" and "approved" aren't exactly the same thing in ESD-speak. Active just means your claim is being processed and you can file weekly claims - it doesn't 100% guarantee payment. My claim went active right away but then I got hit with an adjudication issue 3 weeks later when my former employer disputed my version of events. Just make sure you keep detailed records of everything - every job search activity, any communication from ESD, etc. The system is much more efficient than it used to be, but they still catch issues sometimes weeks after your initial filing.

That's a really good distinction - I didn't realize "active" wasn't the same as fully approved. I'll definitely keep detailed records of everything. Is there any way to know for sure if my employer disputed anything? The ESD website doesn't seem to show that information.

To answer your follow-up question - yes, the monetary determination letter means you're eligible based on your past earnings. You should definitely start filing weekly claims right away. Just because your status can change later (as others have mentioned) doesn't mean you should delay filing. Each week you don't file is potentially lost benefits that can't be recovered later. Regarding your employer - there's no direct way to see if they've contested anything, but if they had immediately disputed your claim, you likely wouldn't have seen the status change to active so quickly. Most employer disputes show up within the first 10 days, though they technically have more time than that. If your separation was a departmental layoff as you mentioned, it's very likely your claim will remain approved. Just make sure you're doing your 3 job search activities every week and documenting them properly.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll start filing my weekly claims right away and make sure to keep up with the job search requirements. This whole system is more complicated than I expected, but I feel much better now understanding how it works.

anyone else notice how ESD seems to be speeding up for some people but still keeping others waiting FOREVER??? seems totally UNFAIR how they pick and choose who to process quickly!

It's actually based on complexity factors rather than random selection. Claims with clear documentation, no employer disputes, straightforward work history, and standard separation reasons (like layoffs) can be processed much faster with their new automated system. Claims that involve multiple employers, unusual separation circumstances, potential availability issues, or employer disputes require human review, which takes longer. The system is prioritizing claims that can be quickly resolved while ensuring complex cases still get proper review.
