ESD claim stuck for 9 weeks - approved by Governor's office but status changed back to pending?!

I'm losing my mind with this ESD roller coaster! I've been waiting on my unemployment claim for over 9 weeks now (healthcare layoff - thanks hospital budget cuts). Finally decided to call the Governor's office on Monday after getting nowhere with regular ESD calls. The Gov office staff actually confirmed they had escalated my case and told me I was APPROVED! I was so relieved I almost cried. But when I checked my eServices account today, my status didn't change to "paid" like I expected - instead it went from "processing-web" back to "pending" again! And now there's a new adjudication date showing today's date. What is happening?? Has anyone had their claim bounce backwards like this after being told it was approved? Planning to call again tomorrow but my anxiety is through the roof right now.

I had something similar happen last month. Gov's office told me I was approved but then my claim went into limbo for another week. Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent directly - it's the only way I finally got answers. The website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It helped me bypass the usual 4+ hour wait times when my claim was bouncing around in the system like yours. The agent I spoke to explained that sometimes there's a disconnect between what the Governor's office sees and what's actually happening in the ESD system.

Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of Claimyr before. Did you actually talk to a real person using it? I've called ESD like 30 times already and either get disconnected or wait forever just to be told they can't help.

This is actually normal (annoying, but normal). When the Governor's office escalates, it sometimes triggers a final review which shows as a new adjudication date. The "pending" status usually means they're preparing your payment. I went through this exact situation in January - was approved then went back to pending with new adjudication date. My payment showed up 3 business days later. The ESD system doesn't update in real-time with what agents or the Governor's office tell you. Check your correspondence folder too - there might be a determination letter waiting there that the dashboard doesn't show yet.

Omg thank you for the reassurance! I'll check my correspondence folder right now. So I shouldn't panic about the status change? The back-and-forth is giving me serious anxiety.

yeah same thing happened to me too it's so dumb!!!! got told approved then pedning then processing wtf make up your mind esd!!! took like 10 more days to get $$ in account after gov office called

LOL welcome to the wonderland of ESD where up is down and approved is pending. I was on hold for 4 hours yesterday only to be told my claim was both approved AND pending review simultaneously. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. ESD needs to hire actual competent IT people to fix their garbage systems. I'm pretty sure they're still running on Windows 95 over there.

While I understand the frustration, what's actually happening is that claims go through multiple processing steps. When a claim is escalated by the Governor's office, it gets prioritized but still must complete all required validation steps. The "pending" status with a new adjudication date usually means they're verifying your wages one final time before payment. The system is actually working correctly - it's just not very transparent to claimants. The status should change to "paid" within 72 business hours if everything checks out.

72 BUSINESS HOURS?? So basically another week of waiting after being told you're approved. Cool cool cool. Very efficient system they've got there.

I had my claim stuck for 12 weeks earlier this year and went through almost exactly what you're describing! The status changes can be super confusing. Based on my experience, here's what's probably happening: when the Governor's office escalates your claim, it gets assigned to a special adjudicator who has to do one final review. That shows up as a new adjudication date. The good news is that once it got to this stage, mine was resolved within 4 business days. The status went from pending → processing → paid pretty quickly. If you call again tomorrow, ask specifically if there are any remaining issues that could prevent payment or if they're just doing the final wage verification. That's the key question that helped me understand where I was in the process.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes sense - and gives me hope! I'll definitely ask about remaining issues vs final verification when I call tomorrow. Did you get all your backpay at once when it finally processed?

0 coins

Yes! All 12 weeks came through as one lump sum payment. It was actually a bit confusing because when I checked my account balance it was suddenly way higher than expected. I had to download the payment history PDF to see that it included all the back weeks. Make sure you've been filing your weekly claims consistently even while waiting - they won't pay for any weeks you didn't claim.

call them again it could be a system glitch i had this happen and they fixed it when i finally got thru after calling like 50 times lol the esd phone system is trash

I definitely plan to call again tomorrow! The constant calling is so draining though. Did your claim eventually get paid after they fixed the glitch?

yeah got paid like 3 days after they fixed it. ask for a tier 3 agent when u call they can actually make changes in the system

This is a normal part of the final approval process. When the Governor's office escalates a claim, it triggers what's called a "special examination review" in the ESD system. This appears as a new adjudication date with a pending status. This is actually good news - it means your claim is in the final verification stage before payment. The status progression typically goes: 1. Processing-web (initial review) 2. Pending (adjudication needed) 3. Processing-web (being worked on) 4. Pending with new adjudication date (final verification after escalation) 5. Processing (payment calculation) 6. Paid (complete) Each status can last 24-72 hours depending on workload. Since you have confirmation from the Governor's office, you're likely at stage 4 and moving to stage 5 soon. All weeks should be paid retroactively when it finalizes.

Thank you for breaking down the stages so clearly! That helps me understand where I am in the process. Is there any way to see which stage I'm in on the eServices portal, or is this something only visible to the agents?

0 coins

Only agents can see the detailed stage. The portal just shows the general status, which is why it's so confusing. If you want peace of mind while waiting, call the claims center right when they open at 8:00 AM - that's when wait times are shortest.

did u try clicking on the pending weeks individually? sometimes mine would say pending on the main page but when i clicked thru to each week some were actually processing and some were pending its weird

0 coins

I didn't think to check the individual weeks! Just looked and you're right - most say pending but the oldest two weeks actually say processing-web. That's really weird but maybe it means they're starting to work through them?

Hey Amara! I'm going through something really similar right now - my claim has been stuck for 7 weeks and I just contacted the Governor's office yesterday. They said they'd escalate it but now I'm worried about the same status bounce-back you're experiencing. Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful though! It sounds like the pending status after Governor escalation is actually a good sign, even though it's super stressful. I'm bookmarking this thread to follow your updates. Fingers crossed we both get our payments soon - the waiting game is absolutely brutal when you're trying to pay bills!

Hey Megan! It's actually kind of comforting to know I'm not alone in this crazy process. The responses here have been so helpful - I was panicking when I saw the status change but everyone's experiences make it sound like this backward bounce is totally normal after Governor escalation. Definitely keep an eye on your individual week statuses like Sophia suggested - mine are showing different statuses when I click through each one. I'm planning to call first thing tomorrow morning at 8 AM like Mason recommended to get an update. Will definitely post here when I know more! This whole system is such a mess but at least we have this community to help navigate it. Hang in there! 🤞

Amara, you're definitely not alone in this frustrating experience! I went through almost the exact same thing last year - claim stuck for 8 weeks, Governor's office escalation, then that confusing status bounce from approved back to pending. It's absolutely maddening when you're already stressed about finances. What helped me was understanding that the ESD system has multiple "checkpoints" even after escalation approval. The new adjudication date usually means they're doing a final wage verification or clearing any system flags before releasing payment. In my case, it took about 5 business days from the pending status to actually seeing money in my account. One tip that saved my sanity: set up direct deposit if you haven't already, and check your bank account daily rather than obsessing over the ESD portal status. My payment showed up in my account before the portal even updated to "paid." The system is slow to refresh but the payments themselves process much faster. You've got this - the Governor's office escalation really does work, it just takes a few more days than we'd all like!

Thank you so much Faith! Your experience gives me a lot of hope - it's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation and came out the other side. I actually do have direct deposit set up, so I'll definitely start checking my bank account daily instead of refreshing the ESD portal constantly (which is probably making my anxiety worse anyway). The idea that payments can show up before the portal updates is really helpful to know. I never would have thought to check there first! Five business days doesn't sound too bad when I've already been waiting 9 weeks. Really appreciate you sharing your timeline and the practical tip about direct deposit - this community is honestly keeping me sane right now!

This whole thread is so reassuring to read! I'm currently at week 6 of waiting on my claim (also healthcare - seems like there were a lot of us affected by the recent hospital layoffs). Haven't contacted the Governor's office yet but after reading everyone's experiences here, I think I need to make that call. Amara, based on what everyone is saying, it really does sound like you're in the final stretch even though the status changes are confusing. The fact that your individual weeks are showing different statuses like Sophia mentioned seems like a really good sign that they're actively processing your case. I'm going to try that Claimyr thing Olivia mentioned too - anything to avoid those 4+ hour hold times! Thanks to everyone sharing their timelines and experiences. This community is literally the only thing keeping me hopeful that this nightmare will eventually end. Keep us posted on how your call goes tomorrow morning!
