ESD appeal reversed - how long until backpay hits my account?
Finally got my appeal hearing on Monday, May 8, 2025 after waiting since December 2023!!! The judge reversed the disqualification decision (thank goodness) and said I was eligible for benefits all along. I'm thrilled but also really need this money ASAP - my savings are completely wiped out from the 17-month wait. Does anyone know how long until ESD processes the backpay? Are we talking days, weeks, or (please no) more months? The judge didn't say anything about timing and I'm afraid to get my hopes up. Those 65 weeks of backpay would be around $42,500 for me which would literally save my life right now.

Congratulations on winning your appeal! The backpay processing time varies quite a bit depending on current ESD workload. Typically, you should see movement on your claim within 7-14 business days after the judge's decision is officially recorded. A few important notes: 1. The decision isn't final until after the 30-day appeal period (in case the employer appeals) 2. You'll see the status change to "paid" on your eServices account before the money hits your bank account 3. If it's direct deposit, expect 2-3 business days after the "paid" status appears 4. If you elected debit card, it might take 5-7 business days after "paid" status Keep checking your eServices account daily, as that's the most up-to-date source. I won my appeal last year and got my backpay about 11 days after the hearing.

•Thank you so much for the detailed information! I didn't realize there was another 30-day waiting period...that's frustrating but at least I know now. I'll keep checking eServices. Did you have to do anything specific to trigger the backpay, or did it just automatically process once the appeal period ended?

congrats!!! i hate how they make us wait so long for our OWN MONEY! my appeal took 14 months and i was literaly homeless for part of it! complete bs how esd treats people. my backpay took 3 weeks after my hearing but that was during covid times so maybe faster now? idk good luck!

•That's awful you went through that! Thanks for sharing your timeline - 3 weeks would be manageable. I'm just trying to plan for bills and don't want to count on it arriving by a certain date if it's actually going to take months.

Be prepared to wait up to 45 days. The judge's decision has to go through the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) review process, then get transmitted to ESD, then ESD has to manually adjust all those weeks in their system. Plus the 30-day appeal window the other person mentioned. My backpay was about $28,500 and they actually split it into three payments over two weeks because of some system limitation on large payments.

•45 days? Ugh. That's disappointing but I appreciate the honest timeline. I didn't consider they might break up the payments - that makes sense though. I'll mentally prepare for a longer wait and be pleasantly surprised if it's faster. Thanks!

I went through a very similar situation in 2024 - waited 13 months for my appeal hearing. After winning, it took exactly 32 days for my backpay to appear. However, I had to call ESD several times because there was a problem with the way the judge coded something in the decision. If you don't see any update in your eServices account after 2-3 weeks, I highly recommend trying to reach an ESD agent directly. I eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to ESD when regular calling wasn't working. They have a service that helps you reach an actual ESD representative without the endless busy signals and disconnects. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 In my case, the agent had to manually trigger the payment after seeing the judge's decision in their system. Worth checking if you start getting close to the 30-day mark with no updates.

I used Claimyr last month when I was desperate - it does work to get you through to a real ESD person. Expensive but worth it when you're desperate. But back to the original question - OP, be aware that if you worked ANY jobs during your disqualification period, ESD will recalculate your eligible amounts for those weeks. They'll ask for earnings verification if they don't already have it from employer reporting. That can add another week or two to the process.

•That's really good to know! I did work part-time for about 7 months during the disqualification period. I reported all those earnings on my weekly claims even though I wasn't getting paid. Hopefully that means they already have that information and won't need to verify anything else.

NOBODY here knows exactly when YOU'LL get paid. ESD is completely inconsistent. I got my backpay in 8 days, my friend waited 51 days for the exact same situation. It all depends on who processes your claim and what their backlog looks like. The whole system is a disaster. Just keep filing your weekly claims if you're still unemployed and check eServices obsessively like we all do!!!

•You're right - it really does seem to be all over the place. I'll keep filing my weekly claims (I'm working part-time now but still eligible for partial benefits). Thanks for the reality check on the inconsistency.

One thing no one mentioned - check if you have the correct payment method set up in your account NOW. I won my appeal, waited 3 weeks, then discovered my direct deposit info was outdated with a closed bank account. Had to wait another 2 weeks after fixing that. Also make sure your address is current in case they need to mail you anything.

•Just checked and my direct deposit info is current - thank you for this reminder! Would have been awful to delay things further because of something so simple.

Just an update for anyone finding this thread later: Most appeal backpay is processing faster in 2025 than in previous years. The average time is now 17-21 days according to what an ESD supervisor told me last month. They've added more staff to the post-appeal processing team specifically because of the backlog issues in 2023-2024.

•That's encouraging! I'll post an update on this thread once I receive my payment so others can see a recent timeline example. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!
