Does taking Washington ESD unemployment affect social security benefits?

I'm 62 and considering filing for unemployment after getting laid off from my warehouse job. My wife keeps telling me that collecting UI benefits will mess up my future social security payments. I've been working and paying into SS for 40+ years. Does anyone know if Washington ESD unemployment benefits actually impact your social security record or future payments? I don't want to screw myself over but I really need the income right now.

No, unemployment benefits don't affect your social security earnings record at all. UI payments aren't considered wages for SS purposes. Your future SS benefits are calculated based on your highest 35 years of actual work earnings, not unemployment compensation.

That's a relief! So there's no connection between the two systems?

0 coins

Correct - they're completely separate. Washington ESD unemployment is state-funded, while Social Security is federal. One doesn't impact the other.

wait i thought if you collect any government benefits it affects social security?? my neighbor told me this when i was filing my weekly claims

0 coins

Your neighbor might be thinking of disability benefits or SSI, which have different rules. Regular unemployment insurance doesn't count as 'government assistance' that would affect SS.

0 coins

oh ok that makes sense. i was worried for nothing then

I'm in a similar situation and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask this exact question. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD within minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. The agent confirmed what others are saying - UI doesn't affect SS at all.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that service. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah, saved me from calling 50+ times like I usually have to do. Worth it just to get a straight answer from Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost though?

0 coins

They focus on getting you connected rather than charging huge fees. Much better than wasting entire days redialing Washington ESD.

0 coins

THANK GOD someone asked this question!!! I've been stressing about this for weeks. Filed my initial claim but haven't submitted any weekly claims yet because I was so worried about messing up my SS.

0 coins

You should definitely file your weekly claims! You're missing out on benefits you're entitled to. The two systems don't interact at all.

0 coins

Filing my weekly claim tonight then. Can't believe I waited this long over nothing.

Just to clarify the technical side - unemployment benefits are taxable income on your federal return, but they don't count as 'earned income' for Social Security purposes. Only wages from actual employment count toward your SS earnings record and future benefit calculations.

0 coins

So I still have to pay taxes on my UI benefits but it won't help my SS record either?

0 coins

Exactly. UI is taxable but doesn't add to your SS credits or earnings history. It's designed as temporary income replacement, not retirement savings.

0 coins

Follow up question - what about if I start collecting early SS at 62 while on unemployment? Does that create any issues?

0 coins

That gets more complicated. If you're collecting early SS and then return to work, there are earnings limits that could reduce your SS payments. But unemployment benefits themselves don't count against those limits.

0 coins

Good to know. I wasn't planning to take early SS anyway but wanted to understand all the scenarios.

0 coins

My dad dealt with this same worry when he got laid off at 59. Turns out unemployment actually helped him bridge the gap until he found another job without touching his retirement savings. No impact on his SS when he finally retired at 67.

0 coins

That's exactly my situation. Good to hear it worked out for your dad.

0 coins

Same with my uncle. UI kept him afloat for 8 months and didn't hurt his SS one bit.

0 coins

does anyone know if washington esd reports your ui payments to social security administration? just want to make sure there's really no connection

0 coins

They don't report to SSA for benefit calculation purposes. The only reporting that happens is for tax purposes - you'll get a 1099-G for your tax return, but that doesn't affect your SS record.

0 coins

perfect thanks for clarifying that

0 coins

Another thing to mention - I used that Claimyr service again last week to ask Washington ESD about job search requirements while collecting UI. Much easier than trying to navigate their phone system myself.

0 coins

Do they help with other Washington ESD questions too or just basic claim stuff?

0 coins

They can connect you for any Washington ESD issue. I've used them for adjudication questions and weekly claim problems. Beats spending all day trying to get through.

0 coins

I worked in HR for 25 years and can confirm - unemployment insurance and Social Security are completely separate systems. UI is state-administered, SS is federal. No crossover between them for benefit calculations.

0 coins

Thanks for the professional perspective! That really puts my mind at ease.

0 coins

Wish more people understood this. I see so much misinformation about how these programs interact.

0 coins

just wanted to add that i collected ui for 6 months in 2023 and when i got my social security statement this year, none of those months showed any earnings. confirms what everyone is saying about them being separate

0 coins

That's really helpful real-world confirmation. Thank you!

0 coins

The only time UI might indirectly affect SS is if collecting unemployment discourages you from working additional years that could boost your highest 35 years of earnings. But that's more about personal career decisions than the programs interfering with each other.

0 coins

Good point. I'm definitely planning to keep working once I find another job. This is just temporary.

0 coins

Exactly. UI is meant to be a bridge, not a permanent solution. Sounds like you have the right mindset.

0 coins

Wait, so if I'm already getting social security disability, can I still collect unemployment from Washington ESD?

0 coins

That's a different situation entirely. SSDI has its own rules about work activity and other income. You'd need to check with both agencies about how that works.

0 coins

Yeah I figured it might be more complicated with disability involved. I'll look into it separately.

0 coins

This thread is so helpful! I was putting off filing for unemployment because my sister told me it would 'mess up my social security'. Glad to know that's not true.

0 coins

Don't delay filing if you're eligible. Every week you wait is benefits you can't get back. The programs really are separate.

0 coins

Filing my initial claim tomorrow morning. Thanks everyone!

0 coins

I had to laugh reading this because my mom asked me the exact same question last month. There's so much confusion about how these programs work together (or don't work together in this case).

0 coins

Right? I think a lot of older workers worry about this. Good to have it cleared up.

0 coins

One more vote for the 'they're completely separate' camp. I collected UI twice in my career and it never showed up on my SS statements or affected my retirement benefits calculation.

0 coins

Appreciate all the real-world examples. Makes me feel much better about moving forward.

0 coins

Just to be super clear for anyone reading this later - unemployment benefits do NOT reduce your future Social Security payments, do NOT affect your earnings record, and do NOT count against any SS eligibility requirements. They're funded and administered completely separately.

0 coins

Perfect summary. This should be pinned at the top of every unemployment forum.

0 coins

Seriously, this misconception causes so much unnecessary stress for people who really need the UI benefits.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses. I'm going to file my initial claim with Washington ESD this week. Really appreciate having this cleared up!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! Remember to file your weekly claims on time once it's approved.

0 coins

And if you need to reach Washington ESD for any reason during the process, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does make it much easier than calling directly.

0 coins

This has been such an informative discussion. I'm bookmarking this thread in case any of my coworkers have the same question after our plant closure next month.

0 coins

Sorry to hear about the plant closure. At least now you know UI won't affect anyone's SS benefits.

0 coins

Exactly. One less thing to worry about during an already stressful time.
