Can I draw Washington ESD unemployment while on Social Security benefits?
I'm 64 and recently got laid off from my warehouse job. I've been collecting Social Security retirement benefits for about 8 months now. My former coworker said I can't file for unemployment if I'm already getting Social Security, but I'm not sure if that's true. I really need the extra income to cover my bills. Can anyone tell me if Washington ESD allows you to collect both unemployment and Social Security at the same time? I don't want to mess up either benefit by filing incorrectly.

Yes, you can collect both in Washington State! Social Security retirement benefits don't disqualify you from unemployment insurance. Just make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment - those are the main Washington ESD requirements for UI eligibility.

•That's a relief! Do I need to report my Social Security payments on my weekly claims?

•You should report all income on your weekly claims, including Social Security. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your benefit amount.

I'm in a similar situation and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about this. Their phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without the endless hold times. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. I've been trying to reach them for two weeks about my claim status.

Be careful about the work search requirements though. At 64, some employers might discriminate based on age, but you still need to document your job searches for Washington ESD. Keep detailed records of where you apply.

•Good point about age discrimination. How many job contacts do I need per week?

•It's typically 3 job search activities per week in Washington. You can use WorkSourceWA to track your searches online.

wait so social security doesnt count as income that reduces your unemployment??? that seems weird

•Social Security is different from earnings from work. Washington ESD treats retirement benefits separately from wages when calculating UI payments.

•It might still affect the total amount you receive though. Best to report everything and let Washington ESD calculate it properly.

I collected both for 6 months last year when I got laid off at 62. No problems at all. Just filed my weekly claims like normal and reported my Social Security payments. My unemployment wasn't reduced because of the SS.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! Did you have any issues during the application process?

•Nope, filed online like anyone else. Just be honest about all your income sources and you'll be fine.

The government is so confusing with all these different programs. Why can't they just make it simple to understand what you can and can't do?

•Tell me about it. That's why I ended up needing help just to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr are so helpful. Takes the frustration out of trying to reach the right person.

Just remember you have to be able and available for work. If you're collecting Social Security retirement, make sure you can honestly say you're looking for full-time work if that's what your claim is based on.

•I definitely want to work. The Social Security alone isn't enough to live on.

•Then you should be fine. Just document your job search efforts carefully.

My dad did this same thing when he was 65. He worked part-time after getting laid off and collected both unemployment and Social Security for a while. No issues with Washington ESD.

•Good to know it worked out for someone else. I'm feeling more confident about filing now.

One thing to watch out for - if you're doing any side work or consulting while on unemployment, you need to report that income too. Don't just focus on the Social Security reporting.

•I'm not doing any other work right now, but I'll keep that in mind if I pick up anything part-time.

•Smart. Washington ESD is pretty strict about unreported income, so it's better to over-report than under-report.

File your claim as soon as possible! You can't get retroactive benefits for weeks you didn't claim, even if you were eligible.

•I was laid off two weeks ago, so I need to get on this right away. Thanks for the reminder!

•Exactly! The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

Has anyone had issues with their Social Security office when they found out about the unemployment? I'm worried about conflicts between the agencies.

•Never had any problems. Social Security Administration and Washington ESD are separate systems with different rules.

•They don't really communicate with each other about this stuff. As long as you're honest with both agencies, you should be fine.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and gave up after being on hold for 3 hours. Ended up just filing my claim online and hoping for the best.

•That's so frustrating! I wish I had known about Claimyr back then. It would have saved you all that time on hold.

•Yeah, I'll definitely look into that if I need to contact them again. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

Make sure you understand the difference between Social Security retirement and Social Security disability. The rules might be different depending on which type you're receiving.

Zara Shah
•I'm on retirement benefits, not disability. Does that make a difference for unemployment eligibility?
0 coins
Liam O'Connor
•Retirement benefits shouldn't prevent you from getting unemployment as long as you meet the work requirements. Disability might be more complicated.

Don't forget to keep good records of everything. Save all your correspondence with Washington ESD and document your job search activities. You never know when you might need to prove something later.

•Good advice. I'm already keeping a folder with all my layoff paperwork.

The online application process is pretty straightforward. Just take your time and answer all the questions honestly. It'll ask about other income sources including Social Security.

•I'll make sure to have all my Social Security information handy when I fill out the application.

•That's smart. Having your award letter and monthly amount ready will make the process smoother.

Just curious - are you planning to look for full-time work or just part-time? Washington ESD has different requirements depending on your availability.

•I'm open to either full-time or part-time work. I still have energy to work, I just need the extra income.

•That flexibility will help with your job search. Just make sure to indicate that on your weekly claims.

If you run into any problems with your claim, don't hesitate to appeal if Washington ESD makes a mistake. Sometimes they get confused about how Social Security affects unemployment benefits.
0 coins
Zara Shah
•Hopefully it won't come to that, but good to know I have options if there are issues.

•Exactly. Most of the time everything goes smoothly, but it's good to know your rights just in case.

One last tip - make sure your contact information is up to date with Washington ESD. If they need to reach you about your claim, you don't want to miss their call because of an old phone number.
0 coins
Zara Shah
•Great point! I'll double-check all my contact info when I file the application.

•Perfect. That small detail can save you a lot of trouble down the road.

•And if you do miss their call, remember that Claimyr can help you get back in touch with them quickly instead of dealing with busy phone lines.
