Can you get unemployment if you get social security in Washington ESD?

I'm 63 and just got laid off from my warehouse job of 12 years. I've been collecting social security retirement benefits for about 8 months now ($1,847/month). My former employer said I should file for unemployment but I'm not sure if Washington ESD allows you to collect both at the same time? I worked full time up until the layoff and paid into UI. Has anyone been in this situation before? I really need the extra income while I look for another job.

Yes, you can collect both social security and unemployment benefits in Washington state. They're separate programs and one doesn't automatically disqualify you from the other. The key is that you have to meet all the regular UI requirements - available for work, actively seeking work, able to work, etc.

That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to choose between them. Do I need to report my social security income when I file my weekly claims?

0 coins

You should report it, but social security retirement benefits typically don't reduce your UI benefits dollar for dollar. It's considered unearned income.

I was in the exact same boat last year. 64 years old, collecting SS, got laid off from construction. Washington ESD approved my claim no problem. Just make sure you're genuinely looking for work because they do check up on that.

How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm hoping it's straightforward since I have a clear work history.

Mine took about 2 weeks. Pretty standard processing time. Just keep doing your job searches and filing weekly claims.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about this, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it so much easier when I had questions about my benefits.

Thanks for the tip! I might need that if I run into any issues during the application process.

Wait, is this legit? I've never heard of a service like this before.

It's totally legit. They just help you get through the phone queue. I was skeptical at first too but it actually worked.

The important thing to remember is that while you CAN collect both, you still have to meet the work search requirements. At 63, some people assume they don't have to actively look for work, but Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week regardless of your age or social security status.

Good point. I'm definitely planning to keep looking for work. The job market seems tough for someone my age though.

Age discrimination is real but don't give up. Document all your job search activities carefully for Washington ESD.

wait im confused... if you're already getting social security why do you need unemployment too? seems like double dipping to me

0 coins

It's not double dipping. Social security is money you earned through decades of work. Unemployment is insurance you paid premiums for through payroll deductions. They're completely different programs.

Exactly what they said. I paid into both systems my whole working life. My social security doesn't even cover half my bills.

ok that makes sense when you put it that way. sorry for being judgmental

One thing to watch out for - if you're collecting social security DISABILITY benefits, that's different from retirement benefits and could affect your UI eligibility since you'd have to certify that you're able to work.

Good clarification. Mine is regular retirement social security, not disability, so I should be fine.

Right, retirement SS and disability SS are treated very differently by Washington ESD for unemployment purposes.

My dad went through this exact situation 3 years ago. He was 65, getting SS retirement, and filed for unemployment when his company downsized. Washington ESD approved him and he collected both for about 6 months until he found another job. No issues at all.

That's encouraging to hear! Did he have any problems with the work search requirements at his age?

0 coins

Amara Okafor

•

Not really. He applied to places online mostly and kept good records. Washington ESD never questioned his job search activities.

Just a heads up - when you file your initial claim, be prepared for some confusion from the Washington ESD system about your retirement status. Sometimes it flags people collecting SS as potentially not available for work, but you can clarify that during the application process.

I hadn't thought about that. Should I mention in my application that I'm actively seeking work despite collecting retirement benefits?

0 coins

Yes, definitely be clear about your work availability and job search intentions. Better to over-communicate than leave room for assumptions.

The Washington ESD website has a whole section about this under their eligibility requirements. Worth reading through before you apply so you know what to expect.

I'll definitely check that out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question last month and could never get through. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got to talk to an actual person who confirmed you can collect both.

Good to know there are ways to actually reach someone if I need to. The phone system sounds frustrating.

0 coins

Yeah the Washington ESD phone lines are basically impossible during peak times. That service is a lifesaver.

Don't forget to keep track of every penny you make from any source when you file your weekly claims. Even though SS retirement probably won't affect your UI benefits, you still need to report it accurately.

Will do. I'm pretty organized with my finances so that shouldn't be a problem.

0 coins

ugh the whole system is so confusing. why cant they just make this stuff simple and clear on their website instead of making people guess

0 coins

I agree the information could be presented more clearly. Government websites aren't known for their user-friendly design.

At least there are helpful people on forums like this to ask questions!

My understanding is that Washington state is pretty generous about letting people collect both compared to some other states. You should be fine as long as you meet the standard UI requirements.

That's good to hear. I'm going to go ahead and file my claim this week.

Make sure you file sooner rather than later. There's usually a waiting week before benefits kick in, and you can't backdate your claim to before you actually filed.

Thanks for the reminder. I was laid off last Friday so I should probably file today or tomorrow.

Jamal Harris

Yes, file as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait around thinking about it.

One more thing - if they ask about retirement during your claim, just be honest about your situation. You're not trying to hide anything, you're just collecting benefits you're entitled to from both programs.

0 coins

AstroAce

•

Absolutely. I have no reason to hide my social security, it's all above board.

Good luck with your claim! Sounds like you have a straightforward situation and shouldn't run into any major roadblocks with Washington ESD.
