Can you get unemployment from Uber driving in Washington?
I've been driving for Uber for about 8 months and things have really slowed down lately. I'm barely making enough to cover gas and car payments. A friend told me that gig workers might be able to get unemployment benefits now but I'm not sure if that's true in Washington state. Has anyone here successfully filed for unemployment after doing rideshare work? I never had a traditional W-2 job with Uber so I'm confused about how this would even work with Washington ESD.

Yes, independent contractors and gig workers can qualify for unemployment in Washington under certain circumstances. You'd be applying for what's called Regular UI benefits, but you need to meet the base period earnings requirements. Since you were getting 1099s from Uber, Washington ESD will look at your reported income to see if you qualify.

•What's the base period earnings requirement? I made decent money some months but others were really slow.

•You need at least $1,122 in your base period quarters to qualify. Washington ESD uses your highest quarter earnings and a formula to determine your weekly benefit amount.

I tried filing after my Uber income dropped and it was such a hassle. The Washington ESD website kept asking for employer information that I didn't have since I was an independent contractor. It took forever to get through to someone who could help me understand the process.

•Did you eventually get approved? I'm worried about running into the same issues.

•Yeah but it took weeks of back and forth. I wish I'd known about services that help you get through to Washington ESD faster.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about gig worker eligibility, I'd recommend checking out Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help people get through to unemployment agents without the endless hold times. There's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Really helpful when you have specific questions about 1099 income and base period calculations.

•Never heard of this service before. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•It's been a game changer for me. No more sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Seems too good to be true but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

The key thing for Uber drivers is making sure you reported all your income correctly on your taxes. Washington ESD will cross-reference your unemployment application with your tax records. If there are discrepancies, your claim could get stuck in adjudication.

•I think I reported everything but I'm not 100% sure. Should I check my tax returns before applying?

Rudy Cenizo
•Definitely. Pull your 1099s from Uber and make sure they match what you filed. Any inconsistencies will delay your claim.

wait can contractors really get unemployment now?? i thought that was only for regular employees with W2s

•Washington allows it for independent contractors who meet the earnings requirements. It's not the same as the pandemic benefits that expired.

I'm in a similar boat with DoorDash. The gig economy has been brutal lately. Are you still actively driving while applying for unemployment? I'm worried about the able and available requirements.

•I'm still doing some drives but way less than before. Not sure how to handle that on the weekly claims.

•You need to report any earnings on your weekly claims, even gig work income. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on what you earn.

•Thanks for clarifying. The whole system is confusing when you're not a traditional employee.

The job search requirements are tricky for gig workers too. You can't just keep applying to drive for more rideshare companies. Washington ESD expects you to look for other types of work as well.

•What kind of job search activities count? I've been looking at some warehouse jobs.

•Any legitimate job applications count. Just keep detailed records in your job search log for Washington ESD.

This is all so complicated!! Why can't Washington ESD make this process easier for people who aren't traditional employees? It feels like they're making it harder on purpose.

•The system wasn't originally designed for gig workers. They've had to adapt the rules and it's created a lot of confusion.

•Well they need to do better. People are struggling out here.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr again recently when my claim got stuck during the earnings verification process. Being able to talk to an actual Washington ESD representative made all the difference in getting my 1099 income properly documented.

•How long did it take to resolve your earnings issue?

•Once I got through to an agent, they fixed it the same day. The hard part is just getting that initial contact.

Been driving for Lyft and Uber for 2 years. Never thought I'd qualify for unemployment. This thread is eye-opening. Definitely going to look into filing a claim.

•Just make sure you have all your earnings documentation ready. Washington ESD will want to see proof of your gig income.

•Good tip. I'll gather all my 1099s before starting the application.

Update: I started my application on the Washington ESD website. It's asking for employer information and I'm not sure what to put for Uber since they're not technically my employer. Anyone know how to handle this section?

Rudy Cenizo
•For gig work, you'd typically put something like 'Self-employed' or 'Independent Contractor' in the employer field. Include Uber as your client/platform.

Val Rossi
•That makes sense. I was overthinking it.

do you have to stop driving completely to get benefits or can you still do some rides?
0 coins
Eve Freeman
•You can still work part-time while receiving benefits, but you must report all earnings on your weekly claims. Your benefit amount will be reduced based on what you earn.

Natalie Khan
•ok so partial benefits basically. that could help with the bills at least

The whole gig economy is a mess right now. Between gas prices and oversaturation of drivers, it's almost impossible to make decent money anymore. Glad to hear there might be some safety net available.

McKenzie Shade
•Exactly. I used to make $20+ per hour consistently. Now I'm lucky to hit $15 after expenses.

•Same here. The market is completely different than it was even a year ago.

Word of warning - the adjudication process for gig workers can take longer than for traditional employees. Washington ESD has to verify your income sources and it's more complex with 1099s.
0 coins
Val Rossi
•How much longer are we talking? I need to know what to expect.
0 coins
Clarissa Flair
•Mine took about 6 weeks total. Some people get through faster, others take longer. It really depends on how clear your documentation is.

If your claim ends up in adjudication and you need to check on the status, Claimyr can help you reach a Washington ESD adjudicator directly. Much better than waiting for a callback that might never come.

•I might actually need this. My claim has been pending for 3 weeks with no updates.

•Definitely worth trying. The peace of mind of knowing what's happening with your claim is invaluable.

Has anyone here actually received benefits for gig work or are we all just hoping this works out? I don't want to waste time on an application if it's not going to go anywhere.

•I successfully received benefits after driving for Uber. It took time and patience, but it worked out.

•That's encouraging. What was your weekly benefit amount if you don't mind me asking?

•I'd rather not share specifics, but it was based on my highest earning quarter. The formula is on Washington ESD's website.

This thread should be pinned or something. So much useful information about gig worker benefits that I never knew existed.

•Agreed. Too many people don't realize they might qualify for unemployment benefits after doing contract work.

•Washington ESD should do a better job publicizing this option for independent contractors.

One more question - do you need to register with WorkSource to get benefits as a gig worker? I keep seeing conflicting information about this requirement.
0 coins
Eve Freeman
•Yes, registration with WorkSource is required for all unemployment claimants in Washington, including those with 1099 income. It's part of the job search requirements.
0 coins
McKenzie Shade
•Got it. I'll make sure to do that as part of my application process.
