Can Uber drivers get Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been driving for Uber for about 2 years as my main income source and work got really slow this winter. Like barely making $200 a week when I was pulling in $800+ during busy times. I heard mixed things about gig workers and unemployment but not sure if I can file a claim with Washington ESD since I'm technically an independent contractor? Has anyone who drives for rideshare companies successfully gotten UI benefits? I'm getting desperate here with rent coming up.

Yes, gig workers can qualify for unemployment in Washington! You'll need to show that your earnings dropped significantly. Washington ESD looks at your average weekly earnings over the past year to determine if you meet the substantial reduction threshold. You'll file under the regular UI program, not a separate gig worker category.

•That's a relief! Do I need to provide my Uber earnings statements or tax documents when I file?

•Yes, gather your 1099s and weekly earnings summaries from Uber. Washington ESD will want to see your income history to verify your claim.

Been driving for Lyft and had the same issue last year. Filed with Washington ESD in January and it took forever to get approved. They kept asking for more documentation about my earnings. Finally got it sorted but was a pain.

•How long did the whole process take? I'm worried about the wait time.

•About 6 weeks total, but most of that was waiting for them to review my earnings records. Once they had everything it moved pretty quick.

I had issues getting through to Washington ESD when I needed help with my gig worker claim. Ended up using Claimyr to actually reach someone - they have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com, they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that service. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked for me. Way better than spending whole days redialing that busy line.

•Seems sketchy to me. Why would you need a service to call for you?

Wait I thought independent contractors couldn't get unemployment at all? When did this change?

•It's been possible in Washington for gig workers to qualify under certain circumstances. The key is showing substantial reduction in work and earnings, not total unemployment.

•Good to know! I drive part-time for DoorDash and had no idea this was an option.

You'll need to be available for other work too, not just waiting for Uber rides to pick up. Washington ESD requires you to actively search for employment, including traditional W2 jobs. Make sure you're documenting your job search activities.

•So I can't just keep driving Uber while collecting benefits?

•You can continue gig work but need to report any earnings. And you must be seeking other employment opportunities too.

•The job search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum in Washington. Keep good records of what you apply for.

File your claim online at Washington ESD's website. You'll answer questions about your work history and they'll calculate if you qualify based on your earnings pattern. Don't wait - benefits can be backdated but there are time limits.

•Is there a minimum amount I need to have earned to qualify?

•Yes, you need sufficient earnings in your base period. For 2025, it's around $3,500 in your highest quarter and total base period earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter.

This is why the gig economy sucks. No real benefits, no security, and when things get slow you're screwed. At least there's some unemployment available now but it shouldn't be this complicated.

•I hear you but at least Washington has better protections than most states.

•True, could be worse. Just frustrating when you're already stressed about money.

One important thing - if you're approved, you'll need to file weekly claims and report any gig work earnings. Even small amounts need to be reported or you could face overpayment issues later.

•What if I only make like $50 in a week from driving? Do I still report that?

Amina Toure
•Yes, report everything. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount accordingly but hiding earnings can get you in serious trouble.

My cousin drives for Uber and got benefits last year when his car broke down and he couldn't work for a few weeks. Washington ESD approved him pretty quickly once he showed his repair receipts and earnings history.

Paolo Ricci
•That's encouraging. Did he have to prove the car issues made him unable to work?

Freya Thomsen
•Yeah he had to show that he was temporarily unable to perform his gig work due to circumstances beyond his control.

Another thing about Claimyr - I used it when I had questions about reporting my gig earnings properly. The Washington ESD agent I reached explained exactly how to handle the weekly reporting for rideshare income. Worth using if you get stuck on the reporting requirements.

•Good point, I'll probably need help figuring out the reporting part.

Make sure you have all your records organized before you file. Bank statements showing direct deposits from Uber, your driver app earnings summaries, tax documents, everything. Washington ESD is thorough with gig worker claims.

•I have most of that stuff saved in my email. Should I print it all out?

•Digital copies are fine for the initial filing, but keep everything organized in case they ask for additional verification.

You might want to check if you qualify for any other assistance programs too while you're at it. SNAP, utility assistance, etc. When gig work income drops it can help bridge the gap.

•Thanks, I hadn't thought about other programs. This situation has me looking at everything.

Question - do you have to stop driving completely to get benefits or can you keep doing limited hours?

Amina Toure
•You can continue limited gig work but must report all earnings. Benefits get reduced dollar for dollar after a small earnings disregard.

•Got it, so partial unemployment basically.

Winter is always tough for rideshare. I supplement with food delivery when ride requests are slow but even that's been dead lately. Glad to know UI is an option.

Paolo Ricci
•Yeah I tried switching to food delivery but it's not much better right now.

•Same here. Hopefully things pick up soon but unemployment might help get through this rough patch.

Remember you'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington and maintain an active job search. This is required even if you plan to continue gig work. Document everything you do for job searching.

•Do I need to apply for traditional jobs or can I just look for more gig opportunities?
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
•You should apply for a mix of opportunities including traditional employment. Show you're genuinely seeking work, not just waiting for your current gig to improve.

File as soon as possible. Even if you're not sure you qualify, it's better to apply and let Washington ESD make the determination. The worst they can do is deny the claim.

Last tip about getting help from Washington ESD - if you need to speak with someone about your specific situation, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Much easier than trying to call their main line repeatedly. The video demo shows exactly how it works and it's pretty straightforward.

•I'll bookmark that for sure. Sounds like I'll probably need to talk to someone during this process.

Hope this helps! The gig worker situation with unemployment has definitely improved in Washington compared to other states. Just be thorough with your documentation and honest about your earnings.

This thread is super helpful. I drive for multiple apps and had no idea unemployment was even possible. Definitely filing if my earnings don't pick up soon.

•Same situation here with multiple apps. Good to know we have options when things get slow.

•Just make sure to include earnings from all gig platforms when you calculate your base period wages.
