Can you get Medicaid while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I just started receiving unemployment benefits from Washington ESD and I'm wondering if I can apply for Medicaid at the same time? My employer health insurance ended when I got laid off and I can't afford COBRA. Does anyone know if getting UI payments affects Medicaid eligibility in Washington? I've heard conflicting information and want to make sure I don't mess up either benefit.

Yes, you can definitely apply for Medicaid while receiving unemployment! UI benefits are counted as income but Washington has expanded Medicaid so the income limits are pretty generous. You should apply through Washington Healthplanfinder as soon as possible since coverage can be retroactive.

Thank you! Do you know roughly what the income limit is? I'm getting about $650/week in unemployment.

For a single person in 2025, I think it's around $20,000 annually for Medicaid, so your UI should keep you well under that threshold.

i got medicaid while on unemployment last year, no problems at all. just make sure you report your UI income accurately when you apply

Good to know! Did you have to update them every time your unemployment amount changed or just once?

I had a really hard time getting through to anyone at DSHS about my Medicaid application when I was on unemployment. Kept getting disconnected or put on hold forever. If you run into the same problem, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to the right people. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

Never heard of that service but anything that helps with government phone systems sounds useful. The hold times are ridiculous.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble getting through.

Just want to clarify - you apply for Medicaid through Washington Healthplanfinder, not through Washington ESD. They're completely separate systems. Your unemployment benefits count as income for Medicaid purposes but shouldn't disqualify you if you're under the income limits. Make sure to have your 1099-G from Washington ESD when you apply.

That's helpful clarification. I was wondering if I needed to coordinate between the two agencies somehow.

Wait, do I need the 1099-G before I can apply? I just started unemployment last month.

•

No, you don't need to wait for the 1099-G. You can apply with your current UI benefit amount and update later if needed.

The whole system is so confusing! I've been on unemployment for 8 weeks and still haven't figured out all the other benefits I might qualify for. Between job searching requirements and trying to navigate healthcare options, it's overwhelming.

I totally understand the overwhelm. Take it one step at a time - healthcare coverage is probably the most important after your unemployment benefits.

I feel the same way. There's so much information to process when you're already stressed about being unemployed.

Pro tip: if you qualify for Medicaid, you might also qualify for food assistance (SNAP). The income limits are similar and you can apply for both at the same time through the DSHS website.

I hadn't thought about food assistance. That would definitely help stretch my unemployment benefits further.

Yes! And if you have kids, there are additional programs like free school meals that you might qualify for too.

Been there. Lost my job in December and was panicking about health insurance. Applied for Medicaid while on unemployment and got approved within a few weeks. The key is to apply as soon as possible because coverage can start the month you apply if you qualify.

That's reassuring! How long did your approval process take exactly?

I think it was about 3 weeks from application to approval. They did ask for some additional documentation which added a few days.

Make sure you understand the difference between Medicaid and the insurance marketplace. With your unemployment income, you'll probably qualify for Medicaid which has no monthly premium, rather than a subsidized marketplace plan.

Malik Thomas

Good point. I was looking at marketplace plans but free Medicaid sounds much better for my situation.

Exactly. Why pay for insurance if you can get free coverage that's just as good?

One thing to watch out for - make sure you report any changes in your unemployment benefits to Medicaid. If Washington ESD changes your weekly amount or you go back to work, you need to update your Medicaid case.

Good reminder. I definitely don't want to get in trouble for not reporting changes.

Yeah, they're pretty strict about reporting changes. Better to over-communicate than under-communicate.

I used Claimyr when I had issues with both my unemployment claim and my Medicaid application. Sometimes you need to talk to a real person at these agencies and their phone system is impossible. The service really helped me get my questions answered quickly.

Seems like a few people have mentioned that service. Might be worth looking into if I hit any roadblocks.

I'm always skeptical of services like that but if it actually works, it might be worth it given how hard it is to reach anyone.

Don't forget that if you're approved for Medicaid, you need to pick a managed care plan. There are several options in Washington and they each have different provider networks.

Malik Thomas

•

I hadn't thought about that step. Are there big differences between the plans?

0 coins

Ethan Brown

•

Mostly just which doctors and hospitals are in-network. Look up your current providers to see which plan they accept.

This thread is super helpful! I'm in the same situation and was putting off dealing with health insurance. Sounds like I need to get my Medicaid application submitted ASAP.

Malik Thomas

•

Right? I was putting it off too but everyone's making it sound more manageable than I thought.

The sooner you apply, the sooner you'll have peace of mind about healthcare coverage. It's one less thing to worry about while job searching.

Word of warning - even though you can get Medicaid on unemployment, make sure you're still meeting your job search requirements for Washington ESD. Don't let the healthcare stuff distract you from your weekly claims and job contacts.

Very good point. I need to keep all my priorities straight and not let one thing interfere with another.

Balance is key. Healthcare is important but so is maintaining your unemployment eligibility.

If anyone's still reading this thread - I just wanted to add that I used Claimyr specifically to get through to Washington ESD about how my Medicaid application might affect my unemployment benefits. Turned out it doesn't affect them at all, but it was good to get confirmation from an actual ESD representative.

That's exactly the kind of question I would have worried about. Good to know they're completely separate.

Smart to double-check. I always worry about these different programs conflicting with each other somehow.

Thanks everyone for all the info in this thread. I feel much more confident about applying for Medicaid now. It's nice to know other people have been through the same situation successfully.

Agreed! This community is really helpful. I'm going to start my Medicaid application this week.

One more thing to consider - if you have any existing prescriptions, make sure to ask about formulary coverage when you're choosing your Medicaid managed care plan. Different plans may cover different medications, so if you take something regularly, you'll want to make sure it's covered under whichever plan you select. I learned this the hard way when I switched plans and had to jump through hoops to get my medication approved.
