Can you file unemployment while working part-time in Washington?
I just started a part-time job that only gives me about 15 hours a week, but I'm still looking for full-time work. Can I file for unemployment benefits while working this part-time position? I heard you can report partial wages but I'm not sure how Washington ESD handles this situation. My previous job was full-time making $22/hour and now I'm only making $14/hour for way fewer hours. Will they reduce my benefits or disqualify me completely?

Yes, you can absolutely file for partial unemployment benefits while working part-time in Washington. You'll need to report your gross wages each week when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will calculate your benefit amount based on what you earn versus your weekly benefit amount.

•That's a relief! Do I report the wages for the week I earned them or the week I get paid?

•You report wages for the week you actually worked, not when you get paid. So if you work Monday-Friday, report those wages on your weekly claim for that same week.

Just went through this myself last month. The key thing is being honest about your hours and wages. Washington ESD has a formula where they subtract your weekly wages from your benefit amount, but you get to keep the first $5 plus 25% of the remaining wages without penalty.

•Wait, can you explain that math? I'm getting confused about how much I'd actually receive.

•Sure! Say your weekly benefit is $400 and you earn $200 in wages. They subtract $200 minus $5 = $195. Then 25% of $195 is about $49. So you'd lose $195 - $49 = $146 from your benefits. You'd get $400 - $146 = $254 in unemployment plus your $200 wages.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact situation but spent 3 hours on hold yesterday and never got through. Has anyone found a better way to get answers about partial unemployment? Their website is confusing about the wage reporting requirements.

•I had the same problem calling them last week. Found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a real person at Washington ESD - claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Finally got my questions answered after weeks of trying.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

•They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me so much time and frustration.

BE CAREFUL about job search requirements though! Even if you're working part-time, you still need to do your 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby with your current employer. Don't forget to log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•Oh no, I didn't know about the job search requirement! What counts as a job search activity?

Freya Johansen
•Applying for jobs, networking contacts, job interviews, attending job fairs, or taking approved training courses. You need to document 3 different activities each week.

•Actually if you're working part-time and actively looking for full-time work, those job applications definitely count toward your requirement. Just make sure to log everything properly.

I've been doing partial unemployment for 2 months now. One thing they don't tell you upfront - if you work too many hours or earn too much in a week, you might not get any benefits for that week. But you can still file your claim to keep it active.

•How do I know if I'm working too many hours? Is there a limit?

•It's not really about hours, it's about earnings. If your weekly wages are more than your weekly benefit amount plus the allowable deductions, you won't get benefits that week.

Make sure your part-time job isn't going to interfere with your availability for full-time work. Washington ESD requires you to be able and available for suitable work. If your schedule is too restrictive, they might have issues.

Emma Taylor
•My part-time job is pretty flexible with scheduling. Should I mention that when I file?
0 coins
Diego Mendoza
•Yes, definitely mention your availability in your initial claim. If they ask about your work schedule, be honest about your flexibility for other employment.

•Also remember that 'suitable work' changes over time. After a certain period, you may need to accept lower-paying positions than your previous job.

ugh this is so complicated... i just want to know if i can get some help while working my crappy part time job. why does everything with unemployment have to be so confusing??

•I totally get the frustration! The system is definitely not user-friendly. But yes, you can get help - just be super honest about your wages and hours when you file weekly.

Pro tip: Keep detailed records of all your work hours and wages. Washington ESD sometimes audits partial claims, and you'll want documentation if they ask questions. I learned this the hard way.

Emma Taylor
•What kind of audit? That sounds scary.

StellarSurfer
•Nothing scary if you're honest! They just cross-check your reported wages with what employers report. As long as you're accurate, no problems.

I was in the same boat last year - working part-time while collecting partial unemployment. The biggest thing is consistency in reporting. Report every week even if you didn't work, and always include accurate wage information.

•Do I report wages as gross or net?

Sean Kelly
•Always report GROSS wages - before taxes and deductions. They need the full amount you earned.

Check if your employer offers standby status! If they're planning to bring you back to more hours soon, you might qualify for standby which has different rules than regular partial unemployment.

Emma Taylor
•What's standby status? My employer said they might have more hours available in a few weeks.
0 coins
Zara Malik
•Standby means you have a definite return-to-work date within 4 weeks. You don't have to do job search activities, but you have to be available when they call you back.

Malik Robinson
•Just make sure you get that return date in writing from your employer. Washington ESD will want documentation for standby status.

Whatever you do, don't try to hide the part-time work thinking you'll get more benefits. Washington ESD will find out through employer reporting and you'll face overpayment issues or worse.

Emma Taylor
•I would never try to hide it! I just want to make sure I do everything correctly.

•Good! You'd be surprised how many people think they can get away with it. Honesty is always the best policy with unemployment benefits.

One more thing - if your part-time wages are really low, you might actually get close to your full unemployment benefit amount. The calculation can work in your favor when you're only working a few hours.
0 coins
Emma Taylor
•That would be amazing! I'm only making about $210 a week at this part-time job.

Nia Thompson
•Yeah, with wages that low, you'll probably still get a decent unemployment payment. Just remember to keep looking for full-time work!

The hardest part about partial unemployment is the weekly reporting. You have to be super consistent about filing every week, even weeks when you don't work at all.

Emma Taylor
•What happens if I forget to file one week?

Mateo Rodriguez
•You can usually file for previous weeks if you miss one, but it's better to just set a reminder and file every week on the same day.

Been collecting partial benefits for 6 months now while working two part-time jobs. The key is organization - track everything, report everything, and don't miss your weekly filings.
0 coins
Emma Taylor
•Wait, you can work TWO part-time jobs and still get unemployment?
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Yes! You just report ALL wages from ALL jobs. As long as your total weekly earnings don't exceed the benefit threshold, you can still get partial payments.

Isabella Silva
•That's actually pretty smart - diversifying your income while still getting some unemployment support.

Just remember that partial unemployment benefits count toward your total benefit year, so you're still using up your available weeks. Plan accordingly if you think you might need full unemployment later.
0 coins
Emma Taylor
•I didn't think about that. How many weeks do you get total?
0 coins
GalacticGladiator
•Standard is 26 weeks in Washington, but it can vary based on economic conditions. Each week you file - even for partial benefits - counts toward that total.

The Washington ESD website has a partial benefits calculator that might help you estimate what you'd receive. Look under the 'Benefit Estimator' section.
0 coins
Emma Taylor
•I'll definitely check that out! Having an estimate would help me budget better.

Ethan Brown
•It's not perfect but gives you a good ballpark. Just remember actual benefits depend on your specific wage base period.

Had issues reaching Washington ESD about my partial claim questions too. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - totally worth it to actually talk to a real person who could explain the wage reporting requirements clearly.

•I'm definitely going to look into that. These phone wait times are ridiculous.

•Yeah, saved me probably 10+ hours of sitting on hold. The agent was able to walk me through exactly how to report my irregular part-time schedule.

Bottom line - yes you can file for unemployment while working part-time. Just be honest, report everything accurately, keep good records, and stay on top of your weekly filings. The system is designed to help people transitioning back to full-time work.
