Washington ESD - can you still claim unemployment while working part-time?
I just started a part-time job at a grocery store but I'm only getting about 15 hours a week. My previous full-time position was eliminated in January and I've been on unemployment since then. Can I still file my weekly claims with Washington ESD while working these part-time hours? I don't want to mess up my benefits but I also can't survive on just unemployment. The job pays $18/hour but like I said, very limited hours. Do I need to report this work when I file my weekly claim?

Yes, you can absolutely work part-time and still collect unemployment benefits in Washington! You just need to report all your work and earnings when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on how much you earn, but you might still get partial benefits.

•That's a relief! So I report the hours and gross pay for that week on my weekly claim form?

Amara Okafor
•Exactly. Report gross earnings before taxes. They have formulas to calculate how much your benefits get reduced.

Be super careful about reporting everything accurately. I know someone who got an overpayment notice because they didn't report some cash work they did. Washington ESD takes this stuff seriously.

•Good point. This is all above board - regular W2 job with paystubs and everything.

•Smart to be cautious. Overpayment notices are a nightmare to deal with.

Washington has what's called 'partial unemployment' benefits. Generally, if you work less than full-time hours and earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you can still receive some benefits. The exact calculation depends on your specific situation, but working 15 hours at $18/hour should still leave you eligible for partial benefits.

•That's about $270 gross per week, so hopefully I can still get something. My weekly benefit amount is $365.

•With those numbers, you should definitely still qualify for partial benefits. They'll deduct a portion of your earnings from your weekly benefit.

•The formula is kind of complicated but the system calculates it automatically when you report your earnings.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about reporting my part-time work. The phone lines were always busy and I was getting stressed about filing correctly. Someone on here recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they actually helped me get connected to an agent who walked me through the partial benefits process. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, surprisingly well. Got through to an actual Washington ESD rep within a few tries instead of calling for hours myself.

•I'm always skeptical of third-party services but if it helps with those impossible phone waits...

MAKE SURE you keep detailed records of all your work hours and pay! I got audited by Washington ESD and had to provide documentation going back 6 months. Pay stubs, work schedules, everything.

•Good advice. I'll start keeping copies of everything right away.

Miguel Ramos
•Yeah, documentation is key. Take photos of your schedules too in case you lose the paper copies.

You also still need to be available for full-time work and actively job searching. The part-time job can't interfere with your ability to accept full-time employment if it's offered.

•Right, I'm still applying for full-time positions. This part-time thing is just to help pay bills while I search.

•Perfect. Just make sure you don't turn down suitable full-time work because of the part-time schedule.

wait so if I make like $200/week at a part time job I can still get unemployment? I thought it was all or nothing

StarStrider
•Nope, Washington has partial benefits. You can work part-time and still collect some unemployment as long as you meet the requirements.

•damn I wish I knew this earlier, I turned down part-time work thinking it would kill my benefits

The key thing is being honest on your weekly claims. Answer all the questions truthfully about work and earnings. Don't try to hide anything because they cross-reference with employer records.

•Absolutely. I want to do this right and not create problems down the road.

•Good attitude. Better to get slightly reduced benefits than risk an overpayment or fraud investigation.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question and spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected. So frustrating when you just want to follow the rules correctly.

•The phone system is brutal. I've had better luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

•Might have to try that. At this point I'll pay a reasonable fee to avoid the phone maze.

Don't forget you still need to file your weekly claim even if you work during that week. Some people think they skip weeks when they work but you have to file every week to maintain your claim.

•Good reminder. So I file every Sunday regardless of whether I worked that week or not?

Oliver Schulz
•Exactly. File every week and report your earnings accurately. The system will calculate your benefits.

I've been doing part-time work while on unemployment for 3 months now. It's actually helped me feel more productive and the extra income makes a big difference even if my UI benefits are reduced.

•That's encouraging. I was worried it would be more trouble than it's worth.

•Not at all. Just stay organized with your reporting and you'll be fine.

One thing to watch out for - if your part-time job offers you more hours that would make you full-time, you might have to accept it or risk losing your unemployment benefits for refusing suitable work.

•Good point. I'll cross that bridge if I come to it, but right now they're pretty clear about it being part-time only.

•Yeah, just be prepared for that possibility. The 'suitable work' rules can be tricky.

Check if your part-time employer offers any benefits too. Sometimes even part-time positions have some perks that can help while you're between full-time jobs.

Just wanted to echo what others have said about keeping good records. I use a simple spreadsheet to track my work hours, pay, and unemployment claims. Makes it easy to reference if questions come up.

•That's a great idea. I'll set up something similar to stay organized.

The partial benefits system in Washington is actually pretty fair compared to some other states. You get to keep a portion of what you earn before they start reducing your UI benefits significantly.

If you have any specific questions about how the earnings calculation works, you might want to speak with an actual Washington ESD representative. I found Claimyr really helpful for getting through to someone who could explain the details of my particular situation.

•Thanks, I might try that if I run into any issues with my first few claims.
