Washington ESD partial credit unemployment - can I still get benefits while working part-time?
I've been on Washington ESD unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a part-time job that's only 20 hours a week. The pay is decent but definitely not enough to cover all my bills. I'm confused about what partial credit unemployment means - can I still collect some benefits from Washington ESD while working this part-time position? I don't want to mess up my claim or get in trouble for not reporting it correctly. Has anyone else been in this situation where you're working part-time but still need unemployment help?

Yes, you can absolutely work part-time and still receive partial unemployment benefits in Washington! This is called 'partial unemployment' and it's designed exactly for situations like yours. You'll need to report your part-time earnings when you file your weekly claim, and Washington ESD will calculate your reduced benefit amount.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do you know how they calculate how much I'd still get? I'm worried it might not be worth it if they reduce my benefits too much.

•The formula is a bit complex but basically Washington ESD subtracts 75% of your weekly earnings from your regular benefit amount. So if you normally get $400/week and earn $200 part-time, they'd subtract $150 (75% of $200) leaving you with $250 in benefits.

Just make sure you report ALL your hours and earnings honestly when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD takes this seriously and they do cross-check with employers. I've seen people get in trouble for not reporting part-time work properly.

•Thanks for the warning! I definitely want to do this right. Do I report the hours I worked or just the money I earned?

StardustSeeker
•Report both! When you file your weekly claim, there are specific questions about hours worked and gross earnings. Be precise with both numbers.

I was in the exact same situation last year! Working part-time while on unemployment actually worked out great for me. Just be careful about the 'able and available' requirement - you still need to be actively looking for full-time work.

•Oh that's a good point about job searching. Do I still need to do the same number of job contacts even though I'm working part-time?

•Yes, you still need to meet the job search requirements unless your part-time job has the potential to become full-time. Keep documenting your job search activities in WorkSourceWA.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about this, I just discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent by phone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I was stuck trying to get answers about my claim status for weeks before finding them.

•How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days about my own issues.

•They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an actual agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

This is all really helpful! One more question - if I take this part-time job, will it affect my weekly benefit amount permanently or just for the weeks I work?
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
•It only affects the weeks you actually work and earn money. If the part-time job ends, you'd go back to receiving your full benefit amount as long as you're still eligible.

•And remember, taking part-time work actually looks good if you ever need to appeal anything with Washington ESD. Shows you're actively trying to get back to full employment.

ugh the whole partial unemployment thing is so confusing. I tried to figure this out on the Washington ESD website but couldn't find clear answers. Why do they make everything so complicated?

•I know it's frustrating but the rules are actually pretty straightforward once you understand them. The key is just being honest about your earnings and hours.

•I guess I just wish there was a simple calculator or something to figure out exactly what I'd get.

Been there! I worked part-time for about 3 months while collecting benefits. The extra income really helped bridge the gap. Just keep good records of everything in case Washington ESD ever has questions.

•What kind of records should I keep? Pay stubs obviously, but anything else?

Emma Davis
•Pay stubs, work schedules, and screenshots of your weekly claim submissions. I also kept a simple spreadsheet tracking my hours and earnings each week.

Wait, so if I'm understanding this right, working part-time is actually encouraged? I thought unemployment was all or nothing.

Keisha Taylor
•Exactly! Washington ESD wants to help people transition back to full employment. Partial unemployment benefits are designed to make part-time work financially viable while you search for full-time positions.

•This is news to me too. I've been afraid to take any part-time work thinking I'd lose all my benefits.

Just a heads up - there's a maximum you can earn before you lose benefits entirely. I think it's around 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount but double-check that.

Yara Khoury
•Good to know! I'll make sure to ask about that threshold when I report my earnings.
0 coins
StardustSeeker
•That's correct - if you earn more than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, you won't receive any unemployment benefits for that week.

I tried using Claimyr too after seeing it mentioned here. Actually got through to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait times. They answered all my questions about partial unemployment and cleared up some confusion I had.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details, but for me it was worth it just to get actual answers instead of guessing about my benefits.

The timing of reporting is important too. Make sure you report your part-time earnings for the correct week. I messed this up once and it took forever to get straightened out.

Yara Khoury
•What do you mean by the correct week? Do I report when I worked or when I got paid?
0 coins
Omar Zaki
•You report for the week you actually worked, not when you received the paycheck. So if you worked Monday-Friday, report those earnings on the weekly claim for that same week.

honestly this whole system is a mess. I've been trying to understand partial unemployment for months and every agent tells me something different. At this point I'm just reporting everything and hoping for the best.

•I understand the frustration, but the rules really are consistent. The confusion often comes from people having different individual circumstances that affect their benefits.

•Same here! I gave up trying to figure it out perfectly and just report honestly. Haven't had any problems so far.

Pro tip: take the part-time job! Even if your total income is only slightly higher than just unemployment, you're gaining work experience and potentially networking opportunities. Plus it shows you're actively working toward full employment.

Yara Khoury
•That's a great point about networking. This part-time position could potentially lead to something full-time down the road.

•Exactly! And employers often prefer candidates who have been working, even part-time, rather than just collecting benefits.

I'm going through something similar but with gig work instead of traditional part-time. Anyone know if the same rules apply for things like DoorDash or Uber?
0 coins
StardustSeeker
•Yes, gig work earnings need to be reported too. You'll report your net earnings after expenses, but make sure you keep detailed records since gig work can be more complex to document.

•I do Instacart and report my earnings weekly. Just keep track of your mileage and other business expenses to calculate your net income properly.

Does anyone know if there's a limit to how long you can work part-time while collecting benefits? Like, can I do this for months or is there a cutoff?
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
•There's no specific time limit for partial unemployment as long as you're still actively searching for full-time work and meeting all other eligibility requirements.

Luca Russo
•Just remember your total benefit year is still limited to 26 weeks (or whatever you're eligible for), whether you're working part-time or not.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I'm definitely going to take the part-time job. Better to have some income coming in from work plus partial benefits than just sitting around waiting for the perfect full-time opportunity.

One last thing - if you ever have questions about your specific situation, definitely try that Claimyr service people mentioned. I used them last month when I was confused about my standby status and they got me connected to an agent who explained everything clearly.

update us on how it goes! I'm in a similar situation and would love to hear about your experience with partial benefits.

•Will do! I start the part-time job next week so I'll report back after I file my first weekly claim with earnings.

This thread has been super helpful. I had no idea partial unemployment was even a thing. Going to look into part-time opportunities now instead of holding out for full-time only.

•Same! I've been way too picky about only considering full-time positions. Part-time work + partial benefits might actually work better for my situation right now.
