Can you draw social security and unemployment benefits at the same time in Washington?
I'm 63 and just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant. I'm thinking about applying for early social security retirement benefits but I also need to file for unemployment through Washington ESD. Can I collect both at the same time? I've heard conflicting information and don't want to mess up either claim. Has anyone been in this situation before?

Yes, you can collect both social security and unemployment benefits simultaneously in Washington state. There's no federal law that prevents this, and Washington ESD doesn't have a restriction either. Just make sure you're actively seeking work to maintain your UI eligibility.

•That's a relief! Do I need to report my social security income when filing my weekly claims with Washington ESD?

•You should report all income on your weekly claims, including social security. But social security retirement benefits typically don't reduce your unemployment benefits dollar-for-dollar like wages would.

I was in the exact same situation last year at age 64. Collected both for about 6 months while job hunting. No issues at all with Washington ESD. Just be honest on your weekly claims about all income sources.

•Did you have any trouble with the job search requirements? I'm worried they might think I'm not serious about finding work since I'm getting social security.

•Not at all. As long as you're genuinely looking for work and meeting the three job contacts per week, age doesn't matter. I actually found a part-time job that worked well with my situation.

Actually had to deal with something similar when helping my dad navigate this. The tricky part was getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about how the benefits interact. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone who could give definitive answers.

•That's what I'm worried about - getting clear information from Washington ESD directly. Their phone lines are always busy.

•I ended up using a service called Claimyr that helped get through to an actual Washington ESD representative. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

Wait, I thought there was some kind of penalty for taking early social security if you're still working or looking for work? Doesn't that affect unemployment eligibility?

•You're thinking of the earnings test for social security, which only applies if you earn wages above a certain threshold. Unemployment benefits themselves don't trigger the earnings test penalty.

•Oh okay, that makes sense. I was getting confused about the different rules.

The key thing to remember is that you must still be able and available for work to receive unemployment benefits. Taking early social security doesn't automatically disqualify you, but you need to demonstrate you're genuinely seeking employment. Washington ESD will want to see your job search activities.

•Good point. I definitely want to keep working if I can find something suitable. The social security would just be a safety net while I look.

•That's the right approach. Document your job search activities well - Washington ESD can request to see your job search log at any time during your claim period.

my mom did this for like 8 months, no problems. just make sure you report everything honestly on your weekly claims

•Thanks for sharing that. It's reassuring to hear from people who've actually done this successfully.

I'm dealing with something similar but I'm 65 and already on full social security. Just got laid off and wondering if I can still file for unemployment. Anyone know if full retirement vs early retirement makes a difference for Washington ESD?

•Age doesn't matter for unemployment eligibility as long as you're able, available, and actively seeking work. Full vs early social security shouldn't affect your UI claim.

•That's what I hoped to hear. Time to start the application process then.

One thing to watch out for - if you do find work while collecting both, make sure you understand how it affects each benefit. Earnings can reduce your unemployment benefits and might trigger the social security earnings test if you're under full retirement age.

•Good reminder. I'll need to be careful about that if I do find part-time work while collecting both.

•Exactly. It's not that you can't work, but you need to understand the thresholds and how they interact.

This is so confusing. Why can't they just have clear guidelines posted somewhere? I've been searching the Washington ESD website and the information is scattered all over the place.

•The information is there but it's definitely not organized in a user-friendly way. The interaction between federal and state benefits creates complexity that isn't always explained clearly.

•Exactly my point. These are probably common questions but finding answers is like pulling teeth.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and after 2 hours on hold, got disconnected. Then tried again the next day and waited another hour before someone finally answered. The rep confirmed you can collect both but said to report all income sources on weekly claims.

•Two hours on hold? That's insane. I really don't want to deal with that if I can avoid it.

•Yeah, it was brutal. Next time I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours.

Just want to add that you should apply for unemployment as soon as possible after your layoff. Don't wait until you figure out the social security piece. You can always ask questions about benefit interactions after you get your claim started.

•That's good advice. I was thinking I needed to have everything figured out before applying but you're right - better to get the process started.

•Exactly. Time is money when it comes to unemployment benefits. You can't get retroactive benefits for weeks you delay filing.

Does anyone know if Washington state has any special programs for older workers who are collecting unemployment? I heard some states have extended benefit periods for people over 50.

Malik Thomas
•Washington doesn't have extended benefits specifically based on age, but they do have the WorkSourceWA system that offers additional job search assistance for all claimants.

•Thanks for clarifying. I'll look into WorkSourceWA then.

The whole system is just broken. I've been trying to get answers about my specific situation for weeks. Every time I call Washington ESD I get a different answer or get hung up on.

•I feel your frustration. The lack of consistent information is really problematic when people are dealing with financial stress.

•Exactly. We shouldn't have to become experts in bureaucracy just to get the benefits we're entitled to.

For what it's worth, I successfully collected both social security and unemployment for about 4 months last year. The key was being completely transparent on all my forms and keeping detailed records of my job search activities. Washington ESD never questioned it.

Amina Diallo
•That's exactly what I needed to hear. I'll make sure to keep everything well documented.

•Good plan. I kept a spreadsheet with all my job applications, interviews, and networking activities. Made me feel more confident about my claim.

Quick question - when you report social security income on your weekly claim, do you report the gross amount or the net amount after taxes?
0 coins
Oliver Schulz
•Report the gross amount before taxes. Washington ESD wants to know the full benefit amount you're receiving.

Zara Shah
•Thanks for the clarification. I was unsure about that detail.

I'm in a similar boat but I'm 62 and thinking about waiting until full retirement age for social security. Would it be better to just focus on unemployment for now and delay the social security decision?
0 coins
Malik Thomas
•That's really a personal financial decision that depends on your specific circumstances. From an unemployment perspective, it doesn't matter - you can collect UI either way.

Luca Bianchi
•True, I guess I'm overthinking the unemployment part. That's a separate decision from the social security timing.

Has anyone dealt with this situation while also having a pension? I'm wondering if having three income sources (unemployment, social security, pension) creates any complications.
0 coins
Oliver Schulz
•Pensions are typically treated differently than social security for unemployment purposes. You'd need to report pension income and it might affect your benefit amount depending on the type of pension.

GalacticGuardian
•I figured it would be more complicated with three sources. I'll definitely need to talk to Washington ESD directly about that.

One more success story to add to the pile - I collected both for 7 months in 2023 while looking for work. Never had any issues with Washington ESD. The key is just being honest and following all the regular unemployment requirements.

Actually found this thread because I was searching for the same information. Sounds like the consensus is that it's definitely allowed. Now I just need to figure out the best way to get through to Washington ESD to confirm the details for my specific situation.
