Can you apply for disability and unemployment at the same time in Washington state?
I'm dealing with a chronic health condition that's making it really hard to work full-time, but I'm not sure if I'm completely unable to work yet. My doctor says I might qualify for disability benefits, but the process takes forever and I need income now. Can I file for both Washington ESD unemployment and disability at the same time? I'm worried they'll conflict with each other since unemployment requires you to be able and available for work. Has anyone been in this situation?

This is actually a really common question and it's complicated. Technically, you can apply for both, but there are some important things to understand. For Washington ESD unemployment, you have to certify each week that you're able and available for work. For disability, you're claiming you can't work. The key is the timing and your specific situation.

•So they don't automatically disqualify each other? I'm just scared of getting in trouble for filing both.

•No automatic disqualification, but you need to be honest about your situation. If your condition gets worse while on UI, you can transition to disability. Just document everything.

I did this last year when my back injury got really bad. I was collecting unemployment while waiting for my disability determination. The trick is being truthful - I could do SOME work but not my previous job. Washington ESD was actually pretty understanding about it.

•How did you handle the weekly claims? Did you mention the disability application?

•I was honest about my limitations when I filed my weekly claims. I could work part-time or desk jobs but not my construction job. Washington ESD considered that 'able and available' for suitable work.

•Wait, so you can be on unemployment even if you can't do your old job? I thought you had to be ready for any work.

Here's what I learned when I went through this - if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to real agents. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. It was way better than trying to call for hours.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially.

•It's worth checking out their website for the details. When you're dealing with both unemployment and disability applications, having someone who can actually reach Washington ESD makes a huge difference.

ugh this is so confusing. im in the same boat with my fibromyalgia. some days i can work, some days i cant even get out of bed. how do you even explain that on the weekly claims??

•For fluctuating conditions, focus on what you CAN do. If you're available for part-time work or work-from-home positions, that still counts as able and available for Washington ESD purposes.

•ok that makes more sense. i was worried they'd cut me off completely if i mentioned my bad days

BE VERY CAREFUL with this. I know someone who got hit with an overpayment because they weren't consistent between their disability claim and unemployment claims. Washington ESD can cross-reference with Social Security. Make sure your stories match up.

Freya Nielsen
•Oh no, what happened to them? Did they have to pay everything back?
0 coins
Sean Murphy
•They had to pay back about $4,000 because they said they were completely unable to work on their disability application but kept filing unemployment claims. The key is being consistent and honest about your actual abilities.

•This is exactly why I'm scared to file for both. The system seems designed to trap you.

From what I understand, the issue isn't applying for both - it's about how you present your situation. If you can work part-time or certain types of jobs, you might qualify for both programs. The problem comes when people exaggerate their disability for SSDI or downplay it for unemployment.

•So I should be completely honest about my limitations on both applications?
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•Exactly. If you can work 20 hours a week but not 40, or can do office work but not physical labor, say that consistently on both applications.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question and spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Their phone system is absolutely terrible.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They handle the calling for you so you don't waste your whole day on hold. Really saved me when I needed answers about my claim status.

•I'll have to check that out. I can't keep taking entire days off just to sit on hold with Washington ESD.

Another thing to consider - if you get approved for disability benefits, you might have to pay back some unemployment. But if the disability is retroactive to before you started collecting UI, that could be an issue. I'd definitely talk to someone at Washington ESD about your timeline.

•Wait, so even if I'm honest about everything, I might still owe money back?

Chloe Harris
•It depends on the dates. If Social Security says you were disabled from January but you collected unemployment from February to June, there might be some overlap issues. That's why getting advice from Washington ESD directly is important.

My sister went through this with her MS. She was able to collect unemployment for 6 months while her disability application was pending. The key was that she genuinely was looking for work she could do - mostly remote positions or part-time office work. Washington ESD was fine with it.

Freya Nielsen
•That's encouraging. So as long as I'm genuinely looking for work I can actually do, Washington ESD should be okay with it?

•Right, and keep good records of your job search activities. Show that you're looking for positions that match your current abilities.

honestly the whole system is messed up. you need money to survive while waiting for disability but they make it impossible to get help. typical government bureaucracy BS

•I feel this so much. It's like they want you to suffer while waiting for approval.

•I understand the frustration, but there are ways to navigate the system legally. The key is understanding what each program requires and being consistent.

Has anyone dealt with this if you're already on unemployment and then apply for disability? I've been on Washington ESD benefits for 2 months and my condition is getting worse.

Chloe Harris
•Yes, that's actually easier than applying for both at once. You can transition from unemployment to partial disability or even full disability if your condition changes. Just document everything and be honest with Washington ESD about your changing situation.

•Should I tell Washington ESD that I'm applying for disability or wait until I hear back?

Omar Mahmoud
•I'd recommend being upfront about it, especially if your ability to work is changing. They appreciate honesty and it protects you from potential overpayment issues later.

Quick question - do you have to report disability application on your weekly claims? I don't see anywhere to mention it on the Washington ESD website.

Luca Ferrari
•There's usually a question about other benefits you've applied for. If not explicitly asked, you should still mention it if it affects your ability to work.

•Thanks, I'll look more carefully at the weekly claim questions.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was actually really helpful. I was able to speak with a Washington ESD agent who explained exactly how to handle both applications without running into problems. Much better than guessing or trying to figure it out from their website.

Freya Nielsen
•What did the agent tell you about handling both applications?

Yuki Sato
•Basically what others have said here - be consistent, document everything, and make sure you're actually able to do some type of work if you're claiming unemployment benefits. They were really understanding about partial disabilities.

For anyone dealing with this, I'd also recommend keeping a daily log of your symptoms and abilities. It helps with both applications and shows you're being honest about your situation.
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•That's a really good idea. Like a diary of good days vs bad days?
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•Exactly. Note when you feel well enough to work and when you don't. It creates a clear picture of your actual abilities rather than just general statements.

One more thing to consider - some jobs are considered 'substantial gainful activity' for disability purposes. Make sure any work you're looking for or accepting while on unemployment won't hurt your disability claim.
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•How do you know what counts as substantial gainful activity?
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•Social Security has specific dollar amounts that change each year. For 2025, I think it's around $1,550 per month for non-blind individuals. Anything above that might affect your disability claim.

thank you everyone for all this info. i feel way less panicked about applying for both now. sounds like as long as im honest about what i can and cant do, i should be okay

•That's exactly right. Honesty and consistency are your best protection. Good luck with both applications!

Just want to add that if you do get approved for both, there might be offset issues where one benefit reduces the other. But that's a good problem to have compared to getting nothing while waiting!

•True, at least you'd have some income coming in during the waiting period.

Freya Nielsen
•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Right now I just need to survive while waiting for the disability determination.

One last tip - if you get denied for disability initially (which happens to most people), you can appeal while continuing unemployment if you're still able to do some work. The appeals process takes even longer than the initial application.
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•Good to know. I've heard most people get denied the first time anyway.
0 coins
Mei Liu
•Yeah, it's unfortunately very common. Don't get discouraged if it happens - just keep appealing and documenting everything.

For anyone who needs to actually talk to Washington ESD about their specific situation, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Having a real conversation with an agent instead of trying to figure everything out from confusing websites made all the difference for me.

•I'm definitely going to try this. I've been putting off calling because I know I'll just sit on hold all day.

•Same here. I think I need to speak with someone directly about my situation rather than just guessing based on general information.
