Can military spouses get unemployment benefits in Washington?
My husband is active duty and we just got stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. I had to quit my job in our previous state because of the PCS move. I've been looking for work here in Washington but haven't found anything yet. Can military spouses qualify for unemployment benefits when they have to quit due to military orders? I'm not sure if Washington ESD has special rules for military families or if I even qualify since I voluntarily left my previous job.

Yes! Military spouses can absolutely qualify for unemployment in Washington. The key is that you left your job due to your spouse's military orders - that's considered 'good cause' for leaving employment. When you file with Washington ESD, make sure you select that you left due to spouse's military relocation.

•That's such a relief! Do I need to provide copies of the PCS orders when I apply?

Javier Mendoza
•Yes, you'll need documentation of the military orders. Keep digital copies ready because Washington ESD might request them during the application process or if your claim goes into adjudication.

I'm a military spouse too and got approved last year after our move to Washington. The process was pretty straightforward once I explained it was due to PCS orders. Just be very clear about the reason when filing your weekly claims.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the waiting period.

•Mine took about 2 weeks. No adjudication issues since the military spouse exception is well-established in Washington.

If you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about military spouse eligibility, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach an agent by phone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Thanks! I might need that if I have problems with my application.

•Is that legit? I've never heard of paying someone to help you call a government office.

•It's not about paying to call - they handle the waiting and phone maze for you. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone about complex situations like military spouse claims.

Make sure you're also meeting the work search requirements while collecting benefits. Washington ESD requires you to actively look for work and document your job search activities.

•Do the job search requirements change at all for military spouses?
0 coins
StarStrider
•No, same requirements apply. You'll need to register with WorkSourceWA and complete your weekly job search activities like everyone else.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. why can't they just make it simple for military families who already sacrifice so much??

•I understand the frustration, but Washington actually has pretty good provisions for military spouses compared to some states. The process isn't too bad once you know what to expect.

•Agreed. At least Washington recognizes military moves as good cause for leaving employment.

What if you've been out of work for a while after the move? Does that affect your eligibility?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•You can still apply as long as you meet the base period earnings requirements from your previous employment. The timing of when you apply after the move doesn't disqualify you.

•Good to know. I was worried I waited too long to apply.

Does Washington ESD require proof that you're actually looking for work here? Like do you have to show you applied to jobs before filing?
0 coins
StarStrider
•No, you don't need to show job applications before filing. But once you start receiving benefits, you need to complete the required work search activities each week.

•Thanks, that makes sense.

I'm curious about the benefit amount calculation for military spouses. Is it based on your earnings from the previous state?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Yes, your benefit amount is calculated based on your earnings during the base period, which would include wages from your previous state. Washington ESD will request wage information from other states if needed.

•That's helpful! I was wondering how they'd calculate it since I worked in a different state.

Anyone know if there are special resources for military spouses job searching in the Tacoma/JBLM area? The job market here seems different than what I'm used to.

•WorkSourceWA has specific programs for military spouses. Also check out the Military Spouse Employment Partnership - lots of employers in the area participate.

•I'll look into both of those, thanks!

Quick question - do you have to be a Washington resident to file for unemployment here, or can you file right after PCSing?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•You can file as soon as you establish residency in Washington. Having a Washington address and being here due to military orders should be sufficient.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear.

I tried calling Washington ESD multiple times to ask about military spouse benefits and kept getting disconnected. So frustrating when you just need basic information!

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When I needed to discuss my specific military situation, I couldn't get through either. They got me connected to an actual Washington ESD agent who could answer my questions properly.

•I might have to try that. The phone system is impossible.

Does anyone know if the military spouse exception applies to National Guard or Reserve spouses too, or just active duty?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Good question. I believe it applies to all military moves including Guard and Reserve when orders require relocation, but you'd want to confirm that with Washington ESD for your specific situation.

•Thanks, I'll make sure to clarify that when I apply.

What happens if your claim gets flagged for adjudication? Is that common for military spouse claims?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Adjudication can happen with any claim, but military spouse claims with proper documentation usually process smoothly. If it does go to adjudication, just make sure you respond quickly with all requested documents.

Emma Thompson
•Mine didn't go to adjudication, but I had all my PCS paperwork ready just in case.

How long can you collect unemployment as a military spouse? Same timeframe as everyone else?

StarStrider
•Yes, same benefit duration applies - typically up to 26 weeks depending on your earnings history and the unemployment rate.

One more thing - make sure you keep records of your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD can audit your work search compliance at any time.

•Good reminder! I'll start documenting everything right away.

•Exactly. Keep detailed records in your WorkSourceWA account and any additional documentation just to be safe.

Does the base housing allowance (BAH) affect unemployment benefits at all? I know some military allowances are considered income.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•BAH received by your spouse shouldn't affect your unemployment benefits since it's your spouse's military compensation, not yours. But if you have any other income while collecting benefits, you need to report it.

•That makes sense, thanks for explaining that distinction.

For anyone still worried about the process - Washington really does make it reasonable for military spouses. Just be honest about why you left your job and have your documentation ready.

If anyone needs help getting through to Washington ESD about complex military situations, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier is legit. Used it when I had questions about my husband's deployment affecting my work schedule.

•Good to know it works for different military-related situations too.

Just wanted to add that when you apply online, there's a specific dropdown option for "spouse relocated due to military orders" under reasons for leaving employment. Make sure to select that exact option rather than just "relocated" - it helps ensure your claim gets processed correctly from the start. Also, keep your spouse's military ID handy as you might need those details during the application process. Welcome to Washington and JBLM!

•That's such helpful detail about the dropdown options! I was wondering how specific I needed to be when filing. Having the exact wording to look for will definitely make the application smoother. Thanks for the warm welcome too - excited to explore the Pacific Northwest once I get settled with work!

Also worth noting - if you have any questions about whether your specific situation qualifies as "good cause," Washington ESD has a handbook online that goes into detail about military spouse exceptions. I found it really helpful when I wasn't sure if my circumstances would qualify. The section on "good cause connected with work" specifically mentions military relocations and covers different scenarios. Better to review it before applying so you can present your case clearly from the start!

•That's excellent advice! I didn't know there was a specific handbook section about military spouse situations. I'll definitely review that before I apply so I can make sure I'm explaining everything correctly. It sounds like Washington really has thought through the unique challenges military families face with frequent moves. Thanks for pointing me to that resource!

Welcome to Washington! As someone who went through this exact process when we PCS'd to JBLM two years ago, I can confirm that Washington ESD is very military spouse friendly. One tip I wish I'd known earlier - when you file your weekly claims, there's a section that asks about availability for work. Make sure you indicate you're available and able to work, even if you're still getting settled from the move. Also, if you're planning to pursue any certifications or licenses needed for your field in Washington (some professions have different state requirements), you can often count those activities toward your work search requirements. The transition can feel overwhelming at first, but the community here is great and there are lots of opportunities once you get established!

•This is such valuable insight from someone who's actually been through the process at JBLM! The tip about indicating availability for work on weekly claims is really important - I hadn't thought about how the moving/settling period might affect that. And I love that Washington allows certification activities to count toward work search requirements. That's actually perfect timing since I was thinking about getting some additional certifications that are more relevant to the job market here. It's so reassuring to hear from other military spouses who've successfully navigated this transition. Thank you for the encouragement about the community and opportunities here!
