Bullying in ESD unemployment support groups - why I'm stepping back

So I've been active in this group for the past few months while navigating my ESD claim, and I've really appreciated the support from most people here. Unfortunately, I'm stepping back from posting (though I'll still read) because of a particularly aggressive member who's been harassing me in comments. This person is upset about their claim being delayed after filing online instead of by phone, and has been taking out their frustration on me. They've also mentioned overdrafting their account multiple times and somehow blames others for that? The hostility has gotten too much - I was just trying to share what worked for me and ask questions when I needed help. Mental health is already strained when dealing with unemployment, and I don't need this added stress. Thanks to those who've been kind and helpful (especially to the person whose username starts with C - you've been amazing). Wishing everyone good luck with their claims!

Dont let one bad apple ruin it 4 u! This group needs people who share good info. Ppl r stressed cuz of money problems but thats no excuse 2 be mean. Maybe just block that 1 person?

I considered blocking, but honestly I think I just need a break from commenting for a while. It's not just the direct harassment but seeing them attack others too. Makes me anxious every time I open the app.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Unfortunately, high-stress situations like unemployment claims bring out both the best and worst in people. If you feel comfortable, you could report the harassing comments to the moderators - that's what they're here for. That said, taking a step back is completely valid if that's what you need for your wellbeing. Just know your contributions have been helpful to many of us navigating the ESD system. Especially your insights about the adjudication process timing!

^^^ This!!! The mods should definitely do something about toxic people. We're ALL stressed about our claims but that doesn't mean we get to be jerks to each other.

I think I know who you're talking about... that guy was super rude to me last week too when I asked a simple question about job search activities. He called me stupid for not understanding the 3 activity requirement. Some people forget we're all in the same boat here. BTW has anyone had luck getting through to ESD this week? I've been calling 40+ times a day with no luck. Need to fix an issue with my standby status before they disqualify me. Getting desperate!

I was in a similar situation last month with my standby status and couldn't get through on the phones for days. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it when you're dealing with something time-sensitive like standby status that could affect your eligibility.

Just wanted to say that your posts about the adjudication process were extremely helpful to me. The ESD handbook is so confusing, and you broke it down in a way that actually made sense. When my claim got flagged for verification, I knew exactly what to expect thanks to your timeline explanations. As for online harassment, I'd recommend taking screenshots of any abusive comments and sending them to the admins. This space should be supportive - we're all dealing with the stress of unemployment and navigating a complex system. Civility isn't optional; it's essential.

Thank you, that means a lot. I'm glad my posts were helpful for you. The adjudication process is definitely confusing - took me weeks to figure it out myself! I might take your advice about the screenshots. I hadn't thought of that.

PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTSND HOW HARD IT IS WHEN YOUR $ IS MESSED UP!!!! ive been waiting 6 WEEKS for my claim to get fixed and ESD doesnt care!!!!!! so maybe cut the guy some slack, hes probly just freaking out about paying bills like the rest of us!!! the REAL problem is ESD and their BROKEN SYSTEM that never works right!!!!! not saying its ok to be mean but EVERYONE is at their breaking point with this garbage!!!!!

Being frustrated with ESD is completely valid, but directing that frustration at other claimants who are just trying to help isn't productive. We're all dealing with the same system and similar stresses. Professional ESD staff are trained to handle emotional reactions, but volunteers in a support group shouldn't have to endure abuse. That said, I understand your point about the immense pressure everyone is under.

Wow, super helpful comment there 🙄 Maybe try some empathy? Being harassed is different from seeing random trolling. This person has been providing helpful info about ESD claims and getting personally attacked for it.

For what it's worth, I've compiled some of the most helpful information from various posts (including yours) into a document about navigating common ESD issues. Things like adjudication timelines, required documentation for identity verification, and the appeals process. Would you mind if I shared it here? I've made sure to remove any personally identifiable information. I think a resource like this could help reduce some of the repetitive questions and frustrations people experience.

That sounds fantastic! Please do share it. I'm happy that some of my experiences could help others, even if I'm taking a step back from active posting. That's exactly the kind of supportive community effort I'd hoped to see here.

If you have approved standby status, you don't need to complete job search activities during the standby period. However, you must still file your weekly claims and be able and available for work. Make sure your standby status is actually approved in your ESD account - don't just take your employer's word for it. Check your determination letters in your online account or call ESD to confirm.
