Last week of NY unemployment benefits - want to thank this group for all the help

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone in this group as I'm entering my final week of NY unemployment benefits. You all were such an incredible help, especially in those confusing first weeks of March 2025 when I had no idea what I was doing with my claim! This community helped me figure out how to file correctly, understand the weird certification questions, and stayed supportive through all the system glitches. This unemployment journey hit us all so unexpectedly - I never thought I'd be laid off after 6 years at my company. Wishing everyone good luck finding suitable work ASAP. For those still struggling with claims or waiting for benefits, hang in there. This group has so much knowledge to share and genuinely helped me get through one of the toughest periods of my life.

Congrats on making it through the system! It's always good to hear success stories. Hoping you find something even better than your previous position soon. For anyone new to the group who's struggling with filing or getting their benefits started, don't hesitate to ask questions - there's almost always someone here who's dealt with your exact issue before.

Thanks! I've already had two interviews this week so fingers crossed something comes through. Honestly couldn't have navigated the NY unemployment system without all the advice here.

100% agree with this!! this group saved me when my claim got stuck in pending for like 3 weeks and i had NO IDEA what to do. still remember when someone told me exactly what to say to the agent and it got fixed same day!

The NYSDOL system is such a nightmare to navigate! I'm 8 weeks into my benefits and STILL finding new gotchas and weird rules. Last week they flagged my account for "inconsistent work search activities" even though I've been doing the exact same 3-5 job applications every week. Really makes you feel like they're looking for any excuse to deny benefits.

If your account was flagged for inconsistent work search, they're likely looking for more variety in your activities. Try mixing in some networking events, job fairs, or skills workshops in addition to applications. The system wants to see different types of job search efforts, not just applications. And make sure you're documenting everything thoroughly!

After struggling with the same issue for weeks, I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual NYSDOL agent in less than 15 minutes. I was skeptical at first, but it actually worked! They basically call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through to a rep, they fixed my certification issue in about 5 minutes. It was something about my work history dates not matching up, which is why the system kept rejecting my weekly certification.

good luck with everything! i was on unemployment for 7 months last year and this group was a lifesaver. my old job called me back eventually but for less money which sucked but at least im working again. the whole process is so stressful.

Thanks! Sorry your old job offered less pay - that's frustrating. I'm hoping to find something new rather than going back to my old industry. The stress of being on unemployment definitely motivated me to expand my job search!

While you're transitioning off unemployment, don't forget about these important steps: 1. If you've found new employment, report your earnings properly on your final certification. Even partial weeks need to be reported accurately. 2. If you're still job searching, you may qualify for extended benefits depending on your situation and the current NY unemployment rate. 3. Check if you're eligible for the 599 Training Program if you're considering career retraining. 4. Keep all your unemployment documentation for at least 3 years for tax purposes. Glad to hear you had a positive experience with the community here!

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the 599 Training Program - might look into that since I've been considering taking some certification courses.

wait whats extended benefits??? my regular benefits end next month and ive only had 2 interviews 😰 how do i know if i qualify??

Extended Benefits (EB) in New York can become available during periods of high unemployment. To qualify, you must have exhausted regular UI benefits and continue to meet all eligibility requirements. Currently, the trigger for EB is not activated, but you should check the NYSDOL website regularly as this can change. There's also the 599 Training Program which can provide benefits while you gain new skills. You'd need to apply for this program specifically through NYSDOL.

good 4 u! i just started unemployment last month and its been a nightmare lol. website keeps glitching and i think they shorted me on my last payment but cant get anyone on phone!!

Double-check your payment history in your online account to confirm if you were actually shorted. Sometimes what looks like a shorted payment is actually related to tax withholding or partial week calculations. If you're still seeing a discrepancy, document everything and keep calling - preferably right when they open at 8am.

I've been through unemployment twice in the past three years, and I can say that the NY system has actually improved a lot since 2023. Remember when the website would crash every Monday morning during the certification window? At least that rarely happens now. My tip for anyone new to unemployment: set calendar reminders for your weekly certification. Missing even one week can create a huge administrative headache that takes weeks to resolve.

That's a great tip about the calendar reminders! I did that too and it helped so much. And yes, the website is definitely more stable now compared to what friends told me about their experiences during 2023.

I was in marketing for a tech company. Looking at both in-house and agency roles now, but also considering a pivot to project management since I have some experience with that. Definitely tough to find comparable pay in this market!

Anyone else notice how the DOL seems to be extra strict about EVERYTHING in 2025? I swear they're looking for any reason to deny benefits. My friend just got his claim denied because he accidentally put the wrong end date for his last job (off by TWO DAYS) and they're treating it like he committed fraud! The whole appeal process is a nightmare too.

•

While NYSDOL does have strict verification procedures, a simple date error shouldn't result in a fraud determination. Your friend should file an appeal immediately and provide documentation showing it was an honest mistake. The hearing process allows for correcting unintentional errors. Appeals must be filed within 30 days of the determination notice, so time is critical.

Thank you all for the great advice and encouragement! This really has been such a supportive community during a tough time. I've taken notes from all your suggestions - especially about properly reporting when I do find work and looking into the 599 Training Program. Wishing everyone the best of luck, whether you're just starting unemployment or nearing the end like me!
