One thing that helped me was understanding that the 26 weeks includes any partial weeks. So if you work a few hours one week and still claim benefits, that counts as one of your 26 weeks even though you only got partial payment.
been collecting for 24 weeks now and found a job that starts next month. glad I didn't have to use all 26 weeks but worried about what would have happened if I hadn't found anything
Just want to add that you should apply online rather than trying to call in your application. The phone lines are always busy and the online system is available 24/7. Much faster and you get confirmation that your application was submitted.
Good luck with everything! Most people's claims go through without major issues. Just stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements and you should be fine. The system isn't perfect but it does work for most people who qualify.
If your claim is still processing after 3 weeks, I'd definitely try to get in touch with Washington ESD. That Claimyr thing people mentioned might be worth trying if you can't get through the regular way.
The whole system is just slow. I think they're understaffed and dealing with too many claims. It's frustrating but unfortunately normal.
One thing to keep in mind is that even if you qualify for unemployment, your benefit amount might be pretty low if you were only working part-time. The weekly benefit is based on your earnings, so lower wages = lower benefits.
Just wanted to add that if you do get denied initially, don't give up! You can appeal the decision and sometimes they reverse it if you provide additional documentation or clarification about your work history.
The appeal process is actually pretty straightforward. You just have to make sure you file it within 30 days of getting the denial notice.
This is another situation where being able to talk to an actual Washington ESD agent through Claimyr really helps. They can explain exactly why you were denied and what documentation might help with an appeal.

Don't forget you'll get a 1099-G form in January showing how much unemployment you received during the tax year. Keep that for your records and make sure the amount matches what you actually received.

•Good reminder! I'll make sure to watch for that in the mail.

•You can usually access the 1099-G online through your ESD account too, don't have to wait for the mail

This thread has been super helpful! I had no idea unemployment was taxable and I've been getting benefits for 4 months. Definitely going to set up withholding ASAP and maybe save some extra money too.

•Yeah I'm relieved I found out now rather than at tax time next year. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!
