Update: Finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service. Turns out my claim was flagged because they needed to verify my previous employer's business closure. Has nothing to do with unemployment rates - just normal verification process. Should be resolved in a few days.
The media makes such a big deal about unemployment statistics but for those of us actually filing claims, the experience is the same regardless of what the national numbers look like.
One more tip - if they schedule a phone interview, make sure you answer when they call. They sometimes only try once and if you miss it, it can delay your case even more. Keep your phone nearby during business hours.
This thread has been really helpful. I didn't realize employers contested claims so often. Makes me worried about my own situation since I was let go during 'restructuring' but it was pretty obvious they were getting rid of older employees.
Just wanted to mention that if you're denied initially, don't give up. The appeals process exists for a reason and sometimes the initial determination is wrong. I know someone who won on appeal after being denied for insufficient wages.
One last thing - make sure you file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no waiting period for eligibility but you can't backdate claims very far, so don't delay if you think you qualify.
And remember, if you need to talk to Washington ESD directly about anything, Claimyr is there if the regular phone lines are too busy.

Has anyone had success reaching Washington ESD to ask about getting a tax document early or anything like that? I want to start preparing my taxes as soon as possible.

•I actually got through to them using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The agent told me the 1099-G forms go out in the last week of January typically.

•Good to know, thanks! I'll just wait for the official form then.

This whole discussion has made me realize I should probably talk to a tax preparer this year instead of doing it myself. The unemployment income adds a whole new layer of complexity.

•Not a bad idea if you can afford it. They'll make sure you don't miss any deductions and handle all the unemployment tax calculations correctly.
