Quick question - if your employer eventually pays you the back wages, do you have to pay back the unemployment benefits?
Thanks for sharing your experience OP. This is exactly the kind of real-world situation that the unemployment system should handle smoothly, but it's clearly not as straightforward as it should be.
Yeah, it definitely wasn't straightforward. Without help from people here and that Claimyr service, I would have been stuck.
One more thing - if you do get approved for both, make sure you report the disability income on your weekly unemployment claims. Failure to report other income is considered fraud even if it's an oversight.
Thanks everyone for all the advice. This has been really helpful in understanding what I'm dealing with. I'm going to contact Washington ESD and get official guidance before making any decisions.
Good luck! And seriously consider using Claimyr if you can't get through on the phone. It made all the difference for me.
Also remember that your benefit amount can change if Washington ESD gets updated wage information from employers. Sometimes they issue a redetermination letter if new earnings data comes in after your initial calculation.
If you're still confused about your calculation after reading all these explanations, definitely try to get someone from Washington ESD on the phone. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was worth it just to get a clear explanation directly from an agent.
For anyone who ends up needing to call Washington ESD about severance questions or other complicated situations, I really recommend checking out that Claimyr service. Getting through to an actual human who can explain your specific situation is so much better than trying to guess from the website.
One more question - if my severance is paid out over several months instead of one lump sum, does that change anything for Washington ESD?

Bottom line - unemployment benefits and Social Security are completely separate. File for your UI benefits with confidence, and don't let this worry keep you from getting the help you need while you're looking for work.

Had the same concern when I was 63 and got laid off. Talked to someone at Social Security directly and they confirmed zero interaction between the two programs. Your future SS benefits are safe!
