I'm on week 22 and starting to panic about what happens when my benefits run out. The job market in my field is still pretty tough. Anyone have advice for making the most of the last few weeks?
I'll check them out. At this point I'm willing to consider career changes if it means steady employment.
Also might be worth using Claimyr to speak with Washington ESD about any retraining programs or resources they might have available. Sometimes there are programs that aren't well-publicized.
Thank you everyone for all this information! I feel much better understanding that I have up to 26 weeks to work with. That should be enough time to find something good rather than just taking the first job that comes along.
Drawing unemployment saved my family when I got laid off from Boeing. The key is staying on top of all the requirements - weekly claims, job searches, responding to any requests for information immediately. Don't let anything slide or you'll create problems for yourself.
Last bit of advice - if you get overwhelmed by all this, take it one step at a time. File your initial claim first, then worry about weekly claims and job search requirements as they come up. The Washington ESD website has pretty good tutorials for each step.
Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what! Even if you don't get paid right away, you need to maintain that filing schedule or you'll lose benefits for those weeks.
PSA: Make sure you have your routing and account numbers handy before starting any transfer process. Seems obvious but I got halfway through and realized I didn't know my routing number off the top of my head.
One more plug for getting through to ESD directly if you need to make account changes - Claimyr really is the way to go when the phone lines are jammed. Worth every penny to avoid the phone tree nightmare.

Good luck! Come back and let us know how it goes. Always happy to help someone navigate this maze of a system.

•Will do! Hopefully it goes smoothly but if I run into issues I know where to find help now.

Just remember - filing for unemployment isn't something to be ashamed of. You paid into this system through your taxes and you deserve these benefits when you need them. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about using a safety net that's there for exactly this situation.

•Totally normal to feel that way. Just focus on getting back on your feet and finding your next opportunity.
