How do I file for unemployment benefits in Washington - complete beginner
Never filed for unemployment before and honestly have no clue where to start. Got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and people keep telling me I should file right away but I don't even know what website to go to or what information I need. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time? What documents should I have ready? Really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the basic steps to get started with Washington ESD.

Don't wait! You should file your initial claim as soon as possible because there's a waiting week before you can start receiving benefits. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'File a Claim' link. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment.

•Thank you! Do I need exact dates or can I estimate if I don't remember the exact start/end dates?

•Try to be as accurate as possible but estimates are okay if you don't have exact dates. Washington ESD will verify with your employers anyway.

The online system walks you through everything step by step. Make sure you have your last employer's information handy - business name, address, phone number, your job title, and reason for separation. Since you were laid off that should be straightforward.

•What if I worked multiple jobs in the past year? Do I need info for all of them?

•Yes, list all employers from the past 18 months. Washington ESD uses all your wages to calculate your benefit amount.

Just went through this process myself last month after getting laid off. The hardest part was actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions - their phone lines are absolutely swamped. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to help me get connected to an actual agent. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows how it works and it saved me hours of calling.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•Totally worth it when you need to actually talk to someone. Way better than hitting redial for hours.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing!! took me forever to figure out where to even start filing. why can't they make this stuff easier when people are already stressed about losing their jobs???

•I know it's frustrating but once you get started it's not too bad. The key is having all your info organized before you begin.

•yeah i guess, just wish they explained things better for people who never done this before

Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still being processed. You can't get paid for weeks you don't file for, and you have to file by Sunday night each week for the previous week.

•Wait, so I have to file something every single week? I thought it was just the one initial application.

•Yep, filing the initial claim just establishes your eligibility. You have to file weekly claims to actually get paid each week.

•This is super important! I missed filing for two weeks when I first started and lost those benefits permanently.

Also be prepared for the job search requirements. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. Register with WorkSource Washington too - it's required.

•What counts as a job search contact? Does applying online count?

•Yes, online applications count. You can also attend job fairs, networking events, or contact employers directly. Just keep detailed records.

Don't stress too much about making mistakes on the application. You can always call to make corrections, though good luck getting through lol. The main thing is to file ASAP so your claim date is established.

•That's reassuring, thanks. I'm probably overthinking this but I just don't want to mess anything up.

•Totally normal to be nervous about it. Most people figure it out as they go.

•Exactly, and Washington ESD is pretty good about working with people to fix issues when they come up.

Quick tip - when you're filling out the application, make sure you select the right reason for separation. Since you were laid off, that's 'lack of work' not 'quit' or 'fired for misconduct.' Getting that wrong can delay your claim.

•Good point, I definitely would have been confused about that. Thanks for the heads up!

Also heads up that it might take a few weeks to get your first payment even after you're approved. Washington ESD has a waiting week plus processing time, so don't panic if you don't see money right away.

•A few weeks?? I was hoping to get something next week. How am I supposed to pay rent?

•I know it sucks but that's just how the system works. Try to have some savings if possible or look into local assistance programs.

Been there! The waiting is the worst part. I had issues with my claim getting stuck in adjudication for weeks because of some confusion about my last day of work. When I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier, they cleared it up in like 10 minutes. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening to me?

•It's when they need to investigate something about your claim before approving it. Usually happens when there's conflicting info or questions about why you left your job.

the whole system is set up to make it as hard as possible for people to get benefits they deserve. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because of some stupid technicality

Hannah Flores
•What was the technicality? Trying to avoid any issues with my own claim.

•they claimed i didn't provide enough proof of my job search activities even though i did everything they asked for

One thing I wish someone had told me - keep copies of EVERYTHING. Every form you fill out, every document you submit, every confirmation number. You'll probably need to reference it later.

•That's really good advice, thank you. I'll start a folder for all this stuff.

Also make sure your contact info is up to date in the system. They'll send important notices by mail and if you moved recently you might miss something critical.

•Good point, I did just move a few months ago. I'll double check that when I file.

Pro tip: file your claim early in the morning if possible. The website tends to run slower later in the day when more people are using it.

•Thanks! I'll try to do it first thing tomorrow morning then.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your payments or you'll owe at tax time.

•Ugh, I didn't even think about taxes. This is getting more complicated than I thought.

•It's not too bad, just something to keep in mind. I always have them withhold taxes so I don't get hit with a big bill later.

You got this! The first time is always intimidating but thousands of people go through this process every week. Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Just remember - filing for unemployment isn't something to be ashamed of. You paid into this system through your taxes and you deserve these benefits when you need them. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about using a safety net that's there for exactly this situation.

•Thanks for saying that. I definitely needed to hear it. This whole situation has been pretty stressful.
