Make sure you understand Washington ESD's training program benefits. They can extend your unemployment if you're in an approved program, which gives you more time to completely retrain for a new field.
Just want to add that even if you're not sure about eligibility, file anyway. Let Washington ESD make the determination rather than assuming you won't qualify. Worst case they say no, but you might be surprised.
DEFINITELY file today or tomorrow. Don't overthink it. The application process is pretty straightforward and walks you through everything step by step. You can always provide additional documentation later if needed.
Update: I filed my claim right after reading this thread and got confirmation that it's been submitted. Feeling much better now that I didn't wait any longer. Thanks everyone for the advice!
This was super helpful. I'm sharing this thread with my friend who just got laid off yesterday. She was planning to wait until next week to file but now she knows better!
This thread should be pinned! I see this question come up constantly and you all gave such clear explanations. The waiting week is confusing for everyone when they first file.
Just wanted to follow up - for anyone who's still confused about their specific situation, I really recommend using Claimyr to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Sometimes you need to clarify whether you're in a waiting week situation or if there's an actual problem with your claim that needs to be resolved.
Much faster than trying to call on my own. The regular phone lines are usually swamped but Claimyr helps you actually reach an agent who can look at your specific claim details.

One more thing - if you're getting severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when you can start collecting benefits. Washington ESD considers some types of separation pay as wages, which could delay your eligibility.

•I'm getting two weeks of vacation pay. Will that delay my benefits by two weeks?

•It might, depending on how your employer reports it. You'll need to report it when you file your claim and let Washington ESD determine how it affects your eligibility.

The whole process is honestly overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward. The hardest part is dealing with any issues that come up and trying to reach someone at Washington ESD when you need help.

•That seems to be the common theme - hard to reach anyone when you have questions. I'll definitely look into that Claimyr service if I run into problems.
