How much do you get paid on unemployment in Washington - need to know the payment amounts
I just lost my job last week and I'm trying to figure out what my unemployment benefits will be. I was making about $4200 a month at my warehouse job. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different things about it being a percentage of your wages but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts I should expect.

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter earnings from the last 18 months to calculate your weekly benefit amount. It's roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, but there's also a maximum weekly benefit amount that changes each year. For 2025 I think the max is around $999 per week.

•So if I made $12,600 in my highest quarter, that would be about $485 per week? That seems like a lot more than I expected.

•Yeah that sounds about right. The formula is your highest quarter divided by 26, then that amount gets adjusted based on the current benefit table. You'll get the exact amount once you file your claim.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months trying to get my claim sorted out. The benefit calculation is confusing but the real problem is actually getting through to someone to ask questions. I spent weeks calling the 800 number with no luck until I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm worried about giving my info to some random company. How do you know they're not a scam?

•They don't ask for your personal info, they just help you get through the phone system. I was skeptical too but it worked when nothing else did. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person at Washington ESD.

•I used them too after seeing someone mention it here. Worth it just to avoid the endless busy signals and getting hung up on.

The benefit amount also depends on whether you have any dependents. You can get an additional $26 per week for each dependent child under 18. Also keep in mind that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you might want to have them withhold federal taxes from your payments.

Paolo Marino
•I have two kids so that would be an extra $52 per week. Do I need to provide proof of dependents when I file?
0 coins
Javier Hernandez
•Yes, you'll need to provide documentation like birth certificates or tax returns showing your dependents. Washington ESD is pretty strict about verifying dependent claims.

just filed my claim last month and im getting $567 per week. my wages were all over the place because i worked construction so some weeks were good and some were terrible. the calculation is based on your base period which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed

•How long did it take to get your first payment? I'm worried about how I'm going to pay rent next month.

•took about 3 weeks for me but that was because they had to verify my employment history. if your employer responds quickly to their requests it might be faster

This whole system is ridiculous. I made $65k last year and my benefit amount is only $623 per week. That's not even half of what I was making! How are people supposed to survive on this? And don't even get me started on the job search requirements - you have to apply to 3 jobs per week and keep a log of everything.

Paolo Marino
•Wait, there are job search requirements? What kind of jobs do I need to apply to?
0 coins
Javier Hernandez
•You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and they have to be for suitable work. Generally that means jobs that pay at least 80% of your previous wage or are in your field of experience.

LunarLegend
•Yeah and you have to log everything in WorkSourceWA. Miss one week of job searches and they'll deny your claim. The whole thing is designed to make you give up.

The maximum benefit in Washington is actually $999 per week for 2025, but most people don't get that much. I think you need to have made over $65k in your base period to get the max. The minimum is $295 per week.

Paolo Marino
•So there's a minimum amount? That's good to know. I was worried I might not qualify for much since I only worked at this job for 8 months.

•As long as you worked long enough to meet the monetary requirements, you should be fine. You need at least $3,850 in your base period and wages in at least two quarters.

Be prepared for delays if there are any issues with your claim. Mine got stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks because my previous employer disputed it. I couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent who explained what was happening with my case.

•What kind of issues cause adjudication? I left my job because they cut my hours to almost nothing.

•That could be considered good cause for quitting, but Washington ESD will investigate to make sure. They'll contact your employer and possibly ask for documentation. Just be honest about why you left.

Pro tip: apply for benefits as soon as possible even if you're not sure about the amounts. There's a waiting week for the first payment and you can't get benefits for weeks before you file. The sooner you start the process, the sooner you'll start receiving payments.

•Good point. I'll file this weekend. Is there anything else I should know before I start the application?

•Have your employment history ready for the last 18 months, including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment. Also have your Social Security card and ID ready for verification.

I get $445 per week and honestly its not enough to cover everything but its better than nothing. been on unemployment for 3 months now and still looking for work. the job market is tough right now especially in my field

•What field are you in? I'm hoping warehouse work will be easier to find.

•im in retail management. lots of competition for the decent paying jobs. warehouse work should be better since there's always demand for that

One thing to remember is that your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you file, but you can only collect up to 26 weeks of benefits during that year. So if you find work and then lose it again within your benefit year, you might be able to reopen your claim without filing a new one.

•That's good to know. Hopefully I won't need anywhere near 26 weeks but it's reassuring to know it's there.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. i tried to calculate my benefit amount using their online calculator but it gave me a different number than what i actually got. ended up being about $50 less per week than what the calculator said

Paolo Marino
•There's an online calculator? Where did you find that?

•its on the washington esd website somewhere but like i said it wasnt accurate for me. probably better to just wait and see what they actually approve you for

The benefit calculation can be tricky because it's based on your base period wages, not your most recent job. If you recently got a raise or started a new higher-paying job, that income might not be included in your base period yet. This is why some people are surprised by their benefit amount being lower than expected.

Paolo Marino
•I've been at the same job for 8 months with the same pay rate, so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

Javier Hernandez
•You should be fine then. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters, so your recent wages should be included.

Does anyone know if overtime counts toward your benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT last year especially in the 4th quarter.
0 coins
Amina Bah
•Yes, overtime counts as regular wages for benefit calculation purposes. All your reported wages from covered employment are included.

Freya Andersen
•Good to know. I was hoping that would boost my benefit amount since I put in so many extra hours.

Be careful about working part-time while collecting benefits. You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 before they start reducing your unemployment payment. So if your benefit is $500, you can earn up to $495 without any reduction.

•That's actually not bad. I was thinking about doing some gig work while I'm looking for a full-time job.

•Just make sure you report all your earnings on your weekly claim. They'll catch it if you don't and that could cause an overpayment issue.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my benefit amount calculation because I think there's an error. Finally got through using Claimyr and found out they were missing wages from one of my employers. The agent was able to add the missing wages and recalculate my benefit amount. Went from $389 to $521 per week.

Paolo Marino
•Wow, that's a big difference. How did they miss wages from an employer?

CosmicCrusader
•The employer apparently didn't report my wages correctly to the state. It happens more often than you'd think. Always worth double-checking if your benefit amount seems low.

just want to add that if you have questions about your benefit amount the easiest way is probably to check your monetary determination notice. it breaks down exactly how they calculated your benefits and shows all the wages they have on file for you

Paolo Marino
•When do you get that notice? Is it mailed or online?

Chloe Robinson
•you should get it within a few days of filing your claim. its available in your online account and they also mail a copy. definitely review it carefully

The payment amounts vary so much between people. My coworker and I both got laid off from the same job but she gets $150 more per week than me because she has a dependent and worked more hours during her base period. It's all about your specific wage history.

Paolo Marino
•Makes sense. I guess I won't really know until I file and see what they calculate for me.

Don't forget about the waiting week! You won't get paid for your first week of unemployment even if you're eligible. I made the mistake of thinking I'd get paid right away and had to scramble to cover bills that first week.

Paolo Marino
•Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to plan for that delay.

•Yeah it caught me off guard. After that first week though, payments come pretty regularly as long as you file your weekly claims on time.

One more thing - if you're getting severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when you can start collecting benefits. Washington ESD considers some types of separation pay as wages, which could delay your eligibility.
0 coins
Paolo Marino
•I'm getting two weeks of vacation pay. Will that delay my benefits by two weeks?
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•It might, depending on how your employer reports it. You'll need to report it when you file your claim and let Washington ESD determine how it affects your eligibility.

The whole process is honestly overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward. The hardest part is dealing with any issues that come up and trying to reach someone at Washington ESD when you need help.

•That seems to be the common theme - hard to reach anyone when you have questions. I'll definitely look into that Claimyr service if I run into problems.
