How much do you get for Washington ESD unemployment weekly benefits?

I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but want to know what kind of weekly benefit amount I can expect from Washington ESD. I was making about $4,200 per month at my last job as a warehouse supervisor before getting laid off. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? Is there a maximum? I've heard different things from people and want to get accurate info before I file my claim.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then that's roughly your weekly amount but there's a cap.

Thanks! So if I made around $13,000 in my highest quarter, that would be about $500 per week?

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right, maybe a little less after they run the exact calculation. You'll know for sure once you file your initial claim.

0 coins

The formula is actually a bit more complex than just dividing by 26. Washington ESD looks at your two highest quarters in your base period and uses a percentage calculation. But your estimate is probably close to what you'll get.

0 coins

Good to know there's more to it. I'll just file and see what they calculate for me.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about this exact thing but couldn't get through after being on hold for 2 hours

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me get my benefit amount questions answered quickly.

0 coins

interesting, how does that work exactly?

0 coins

They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Might have to try that, I've been trying to reach them for days about my benefit calculation

0 coins

The maximum for 2025 is $999 per week but most people don't get the max. You need to have been earning pretty high wages consistently. I think the average is somewhere around $450-500 per week.

0 coins

That makes sense. I wasn't making super high wages so I probably won't hit the maximum.

0 coins

I get $623 per week and I was making about $65K annually before I got laid off

0 coins

Don't forget you also have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! I made that mistake my first time filing and owed money at tax time.

0 coins

Oh crap, I didn't think about taxes. Can you have them withhold taxes from the weekly payments?

0 coins

Yes, when you file your claim there's an option to have 10% withheld for federal taxes

0 coins

I always have them withhold. Better safe than sorry come tax season.

0 coins

Your benefit amount also depends on when you file. The base period they use is specific quarters from when you file, so timing can affect your calculation if your wages varied a lot.

0 coins

I got laid off in January, should I file right away or wait?

0 coins

File as soon as possible! You can't get benefits for weeks you don't file, and there's no advantage to waiting.

0 coins

Washington ESD also has a benefit calculator on their website but it's not super accurate. It gives you a rough estimate though.

0 coins

I'll check that out, thanks for the tip

0 coins

That calculator is pretty basic but better than nothing I guess

0 coins

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You have to be actively looking for work to keep getting benefits, and they've gotten stricter about that lately.

0 coins

How many job contacts do you need to make per week?

0 coins

I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the current requirements when you file

0 coins

Yeah they definitely check on that now, keep good records of your job search activities

0 coins

The whole system is so confusing. I wish they made it easier to understand how much you'll get before you file.

0 coins

agreed, everything about unemployment is unnecessarily complicated

0 coins

At least once you file the first time you know what to expect if you ever need it again

0 coins

I used Claimyr last month when I had questions about my benefit amount calculation and it was totally worth it. Got connected to an actual Washington ESD agent in like 15 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call.

0 coins

That sounds really helpful, I might need to use that if I have issues

0 coins

How much does a service like that cost?

0 coins

I don't remember the exact cost but it was reasonable considering how much time it saved me

0 coins

Just file your claim and see what happens. The calculation is what it is, and you'll know your exact amount within a few days of filing.

0 coins

True, I'm probably overthinking this. I'll just file this week.

0 coins

Yeah don't stress about it too much, the process is pretty straightforward once you start

0 coins

One thing to remember is that your benefit amount stays the same for your entire benefit year, even if you get a different job and then get laid off again during that same benefit year.

0 coins

Good to know, I didn't realize it was locked in for a whole year

0 coins

Yeah the benefit year is 52 weeks from when you first file, regardless of whether you use all your benefits or not

0 coins

Does anyone know if overtime pay counts toward the benefit calculation? I worked a lot of overtime in my highest earning quarter.

0 coins

Yes, all wages including overtime count toward your benefit calculation

0 coins

Perfect, that should help boost my weekly amount then

0 coins

I've been getting $487 per week and I think that's pretty typical for someone who was making around $50K annually. Your $4200 monthly should put you in a similar range.

0 coins

That's helpful context, thanks. Sounds like I should expect somewhere in that ballpark.

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right for those income levels

0 coins

When I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD about my benefit questions, someone recommended Claimyr and it actually worked great. You can check out their demo video to see how it works.

0 coins

I'm seeing a few people mention that service, might be worth looking into

0 coins

Anything is better than sitting on hold for hours with Washington ESD

0 coins

The benefit amount calculation uses gross wages, not net, so don't factor in what you took home after taxes and deductions.

0 coins

Thanks for clarifying that! I was thinking about my take-home pay.

0 coins

Yeah it's based on what you earned before any deductions

0 coins

Just a heads up that you can collect unemployment for up to 26 weeks in Washington, assuming you have enough wage credits in your base period.

0 coins

Good to know about the 26 week limit. Hopefully I won't need it that long.

0 coins

Yeah hopefully you find something new quickly, but it's nice to know the safety net is there

0 coins

Make sure to file your weekly claims every week even if you're not sure about something. You can't go back and claim weeks you missed.

0 coins

That's important to remember. I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly filings.

0 coins

Yeah the weekly claims are crucial, don't skip them even if you think you might not qualify that week

0 coins

Washington ESD's website has all the current benefit amounts and calculations if you want to research more before filing.

0 coins

I'll take a look at their site for more details. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The process is pretty smooth once you get started.

0 coins

Hope this thread helped answer your questions about benefit amounts. The main thing is just to file as soon as possible after your layoff.

0 coins

Definitely helped a lot! I feel much more confident about filing now.

Great thread, lots of good practical advice here
