How much is unemployment benefits in Washington state - need to know what to expect

I'm about to file for unemployment for the first time and trying to figure out how much I can expect to receive. I've been working at a warehouse making $18/hour for about 2 years. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your earnings but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from the past 5 quarters to calculate your weekly benefit amount. It's roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings divided by 13 weeks. So if you made $11,700 in your best quarter, you'd get about $450 per week maximum.

0 coins

That's helpful, thanks! So they look at quarterly earnings, not just my hourly wage?

0 coins

Exactly. It's all based on your actual reported wages from employers, not your hourly rate.

0 coins

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 as of 2025. But most people don't get the max - it depends on how much you earned. There's also a minimum of $295 per week if you qualify.

0 coins

Wow, $999 is pretty good. I doubt I'll get anywhere near that though.

0 coins

Yeah the max is for people who were making really good money. Most regular jobs end up in the $400-600 range.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation but can never get through. The phone system is impossible! Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

0 coins

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents - you can check it out at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm getting desperate here.

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. I was able to get through and talk to an actual person about my claim status. Way better than spending hours on hold.

0 coins

just filed last week and still waiting to hear back on my weekly benefit amount. the waiting is killing me because i need to know what to budget for

0 coins

You should get your monetary determination letter within 1-2 weeks of filing. That will show your weekly benefit amount and total benefit year amount.

0 coins

ok good to know, hopefully it comes soon

0 coins

Don't forget you can also get an extra $25 per week if you have dependents. It's called the dependency allowance and it applies to each dependent child under 18.

0 coins

I don't have kids but that's good to know for people who do.

0 coins

Wait really? I have two kids and nobody told me about this when I filed. How do I add them?

0 coins

You need to contact Washington ESD and provide proof of dependency. Birth certificates usually work.

0 coins

The whole system is so confusing. I wish they would just tell you upfront what you'll get instead of making you wait weeks to find out.

0 coins

There is actually a benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website, but it's kind of hidden. You have to dig around to find it.

0 coins

I looked everywhere and couldn't find one. Do you have a link?

0 coins

I got laid off from my job at Boeing and my weekly benefit amount is $743. I was making about $85k per year for reference. The calculation seemed pretty fair based on what I was earning.

0 coins

That's a decent amount. Should help while you're looking for another job.

0 coins

Boeing layoffs have been rough. Hope you find something soon.

0 coins

Thanks, yeah it's been a tough time but the unemployment benefits are helping me stay afloat.

0 coins

One thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later when you file your tax return.

0 coins

Good point. I should probably have them withhold taxes so I don't get hit with a big bill later.

0 coins

Yeah I'd recommend it. The withholding is 10% for federal taxes.

0 coins

Does anyone know if overtime hours count toward the benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT last year and I'm hoping that helps my weekly amount.

0 coins

Yes, overtime counts. Washington ESD looks at all your reported wages, including overtime pay.

0 coins

Awesome, that should help my numbers then.

0 coins

I tried using some online calculators but they all give different answers. Is there an official one from Washington ESD that's accurate?

0 coins

The unofficial calculators aren't always accurate because they use different formulas. The only way to know for sure is to wait for your monetary determination from Washington ESD.

0 coins

Makes sense. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what they say.

0 coins

My friend said she's getting $520 per week but she won't tell me what she was making before. I'm trying to figure out if that's good or not lol

0 coins

That's actually a pretty typical amount. Probably means she was making around $40-45k per year.

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right for her job.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you worked in multiple states, it can affect your benefit amount. I had to deal with this when I moved to Washington from Oregon.

0 coins

I've only worked in Washington so hopefully that makes things simpler.

0 coins

Yeah you should be fine then. Multi-state claims are much more complicated.

0 coins

The monetary determination letter will also tell you how many weeks of benefits you're eligible for. It's usually 26 weeks but can be less if you haven't worked long enough.

0 coins

I've been at my job for 2 years so I should qualify for the full 26 weeks right?

0 coins

Most likely yes, but it depends on your total earnings over the base period, not just how long you worked.

0 coins

Washington ESD customer service is terrible. I've been trying to get clarification on my benefit amount for weeks and can't reach anyone. The phone system just hangs up on you.

0 coins

I mentioned this earlier but Claimyr really helped me get through to someone at Washington ESD. Worth checking out if you're having trouble with the phones.

0 coins

At this point I'm willing to try anything. The regular phone system is useless.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your total benefit year amount. The weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's a maximum total you can receive over the entire year.

0 coins

Good point. So even if I get approved for 26 weeks, there's still a total cap?

0 coins

Exactly. Your total benefit year amount is usually 26 times your weekly benefit amount, but there are some exceptions.

0 coins

I'm self-employed and wondering if I can get unemployment benefits. Does anyone know how that works in Washington?

0 coins

Self-employed people usually can't get regular unemployment benefits unless they've been paying into the system voluntarily. You might want to look into other programs.

0 coins

Ah ok, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info.

0 coins

The benefit amount also depends on when you file. If you wait too long after losing your job, you might not be eligible for the full amount.

0 coins

I filed pretty quickly after getting laid off. How long do you have to wait?

0 coins

You should file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no benefit to waiting.

0 coins

Has anyone tried the Claimyr service that was mentioned? I'm curious if it's worth it since I can't seem to get through to Washington ESD on my own.

0 coins

I used it and it worked great. Finally got to talk to someone about my claim status instead of getting stuck in phone hell.

0 coins

I was skeptical at first but it actually helped me get through when I needed to resolve an issue with my weekly claim.

0 coins

Good to hear it works. I might give it a try since the regular phone system is hopeless.

0 coins

Don't forget that you have to keep filing weekly claims to keep getting benefits, even while waiting for your initial determination. Miss a week and you could lose benefits for that week.

0 coins

Yeah I've been filing every week like clockwork. Don't want to mess anything up.

0 coins

Smart. It's one of the most important things to remember about the whole process.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I think Washington's unemployment benefits are pretty decent compared to other states. The maximum amount is higher than a lot of places.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I was worried it wouldn't be enough to cover my expenses.

0 coins

It won't replace your full salary but it should help bridge the gap while you're job hunting.
