How much do you get paid for unemployment in Washington - what's the weekly amount?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but want to know what to expect for the weekly payment amount. I've been working at a warehouse making about $22/hour for the past 2 years. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I tried looking on their website but it's confusing with all the base period stuff. Just want to get a rough idea of what I might qualify for before I go through the whole application process.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base period to calculate benefits. Generally it's about 3.85% of your total wages in that quarter, but there's a minimum of $295/week and maximum of $999/week as of 2025. At $22/hour full time you'd probably be somewhere in the middle range.

•Thanks! So they look at my best quarter not my average? That's actually better than I thought.

•yeah the base period is confusing but basically they use the first 4 quarters of the last 5 completed quarters before you file

You can actually estimate it pretty easily. Take your gross wages from your highest quarter in the base period and multiply by 0.0385. That'll give you a ballpark figure. The exact calculation considers your total base period wages too but that's the main factor.

•Perfect, I'll dig up my pay stubs and try to calculate it. Appreciate the formula!

•I used that same calculation when I filed last year and it was pretty accurate. Maybe off by like $20 but close enough to plan with.

Just filed my claim 3 weeks ago and still waiting for them to determine my benefit amount. The adjudication process is taking forever and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on status.

•I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. Spent hours calling and either got busy signals or hung up on. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual agent in like 10 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Did they charge you a lot?

•They focus on just getting you connected, not expensive. Way better than wasting entire days trying to call yourself.

washington unemployment is a joke anyway, they make it impossible to reach anyone and the website crashes constantly. good luck getting your money

•The system has issues but the benefit amounts are actually pretty decent compared to other states. Just have to be patient with the process.

•patient?? I've been waiting 6 weeks for my first payment while they 'investigate' something

depends on how much you made obviously but washington has one of the higher maximum amounts. some people get close to $1000/week if they had really high wages

•Wow I had no idea it could be that high. I definitely won't be getting the max but good to know it's not just a token amount.

I got $587/week when I was on unemployment last year. Was making about $25/hour before I got laid off. The amount was actually pretty fair and helped cover most of my basic expenses while job hunting.

•That's really helpful to know someone in a similar wage range. How long did it take to get your first payment?

•About 3 weeks from filing to first payment. Had to do the whole job search thing too but wasn't too bad.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you file. You have to apply to 3 jobs per week and keep a log. They can audit you anytime and if you don't have proper documentation you could get disqualified and have to pay everything back.

•Good point, I'll make sure to track everything carefully. Don't want any issues down the road.

•The job search log is really important. I've seen people get hit with overpayment notices because they couldn't prove their job contacts.

Also remember you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits. It's considered income so either have them withhold taxes or set money aside for tax season.

•Oh right, I forgot about that. I'll definitely have them withhold taxes so I don't get stuck with a big bill later.

The online calculator on Washington ESD website is actually pretty accurate once you figure out how to use it. You just need your wage info from the right quarters.

•I tried that but got confused about which quarters to use. I'll try again with the base period info people mentioned here.

•The base period is the key. It's not your most recent quarters, it's the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters when you file.

Been on unemployment twice in Washington and both times the benefit amount was fair. Just make sure you file ASAP after losing your job because there's a waiting period and you can't get benefits for the week you file.

•Good to know about the waiting period. I'm still employed but planning ahead in case of layoffs.

whatever you do dont try calling washington esd to ask about benefit amounts, you'll be on hold forever and probably get disconnected

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr for Washington ESD calls. Saves so much time and frustration.

•how does that work exactly? do they just call for you or what?

•They handle the calling process and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

The maximum benefit is tied to the state average wage so it goes up slightly each year. In 2025 it's $999/week but you need to have made serious money to qualify for that amount.

•That makes sense. I'm definitely not in that income bracket but it's good to know the system adjusts for cost of living.

Just remember that part time work can affect your benefits. If you work and earn money while collecting UI they'll reduce your weekly benefit amount.

•Good point, I'll keep that in mind if I need to take temporary work while collecting benefits.

washington state is actually pretty generous with unemployment compared to other places I've lived. The process can be frustrating but the benefit amounts are decent

•That's reassuring to hear. I was worried it would be some tiny amount that wouldn't help much.

Make sure your employer doesn't contest your claim or it could delay everything. Most legitimate layoffs are fine but if there's any question about the reason for separation it can complicate things.

•Hopefully won't be an issue but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!

The nice thing about Washington ESD is once you're approved and get your first payment, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward. Just answer the questions honestly each week.

Taylor Chen
•That's good to know. Sounds like the hardest part is just getting through the initial approval process.

if you end up needing to appeal anything or have issues with your claim, document everything. save emails, take screenshots, keep records of all your interactions with washington esd

•Great advice, I'll make sure to keep detailed records if I do end up filing.

One more tip - if you qualify for the maximum benefit amount, you also qualify for the maximum number of weeks (usually 26 weeks). The duration and amount are linked in Washington's system.

Taylor Chen
•That makes sense. Hopefully I won't need it for that long but good to know the system is designed fairly.

Overall Washington's unemployment system works pretty well once you get through the initial setup. The benefit calculation is transparent and the amounts are livable for most people.
