one last thing - keep copies of everything. your application, confirmation numbers, any letters from washington esd, everything. youll need them if any problems come up
Thanks everyone for all this helpful information! I feel much more prepared now. I'm going to gather all these documents this weekend and file my claim on Monday. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.
One more tip: If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions about filing deadlines or anything else, there are services like Claimyr that can get you connected to an actual agent. Sometimes talking to someone directly is worth it when you're dealing with important benefit timing questions.
Bottom line for anyone still reading: Don't wait. File your unemployment claim as soon as possible after job loss. Every day you delay is potentially money lost since Washington ESD doesn't backdate benefits to your separation date.
One last thing - keep track of all your dates. When you filed, when you got your determination letter, when you filed each weekly claim. If something goes wrong you'll need those dates to sort it out. I keep a simple calendar with all my unemployment stuff marked on it.
Hope this helps the OP and anyone else trying to figure out the timing. The main thing is to file quickly and be patient with the process. It's frustrating but the benefits do eventually come through for most people.
This thread is super helpful. I'm in the same situation as OP was and now I know exactly what to do. Filing my claim tonight!
WASHINGTON ESD IS SO SLOW ugh sorry for caps but seriously they take forever to process anything. I filed 3 weeks ago and still waiting for adjudication to finish. At least I know I filed at the right time thanks to this thread.
If you're stuck in adjudication that long, definitely try calling. Or use Claimyr if you can't get through - adjudication issues are exactly what they help with.

PSA: Don't forget about the waiting week! In Washington you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment. So if you file right away, your first payment will be for your second week of being unemployed.

•Wait, there's a whole week with no payment? That's going to make budgeting even tighter.

•Yeah it sucks but that's how it works. Plan accordingly if you know a layoff is coming.

Just remember that unemployment is temporary assistance, not a long-term solution. The sooner you can find new work, the better off you'll be financially and mentally.

•Absolutely, I'm definitely viewing it as a bridge to the next job, not a permanent thing.
