Social Security payments delayed for overseas recipients - February benefits not deposited yet
My mother lives in Thailand and receives her Social Security benefits via direct deposit. She normally gets her payment on the 4th of each month like clockwork, but it's now the 10th of February and nothing has shown up in her account. This is really concerning since she depends on these funds. I saw another thread about domestic payment delays based on birthdate (her birthdate is the 19th), but I'm not sure if that applies to overseas beneficiaries too? She's been receiving benefits for 5 years with no previous issues like this. My dad passed away 3 years ago, so I believe she receives survivor benefits (his birthday was the 15th). Could that be affecting the payment schedule somehow? Is anyone else who's retired overseas experiencing delays with their February Social Security payment? Any insights would be appreciated as I'm trying to figure out if this is a system-wide issue or something specific to her situation that we need to address.

I'm in Portugal and same thing!!! Haven't got mine either and I always get it on the 3rd. This is driving me crazy because my rent was due on the 8th and I had to borrow from a friend. Nobody answers when I call the Federal Benefits Unit at the embassy either.

•That's concerning! Have you tried contacting SSA directly? I've been trying the international number but keep getting a message about high call volume.

The payment dates for overseas beneficiaries are actually different from domestic recipients. While domestic payments are tied to birth dates (as you saw in the other thread), foreign deposits typically go out on the 3rd of each month regardless of birth date. There's currently a processing delay affecting February payments for foreign beneficiaries. SSA announced this on their website, though it's buried in their notices section. They're estimating up to a 10-day delay for international electronic payments due to a new compliance verification system they implemented in January. Your mother should receive her payment by the 15th. If not, she should contact the Federal Benefits Unit at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate rather than the regular SSA number.

•Thank you so much for this information! I had no idea about the announcement. I'll check their website and let my mom know. Really appreciate the clarification about overseas payment schedules versus domestic ones.

I work with several retirees living abroad, and this issue is affecting almost all of them this month. The new compliance verification system is causing delays because it's adding extra authentication steps for international transfers. One thing to note: the payment schedule for survivor benefits works exactly the same as retirement benefits for overseas recipients. So whether she's getting retirement or survivor benefits, it doesn't affect the timing - they should both come on the same day (normally the 3rd). If your mother has online access to her MySocialSecurity account, she can check the payment status there. It will likely show "processing" but at least confirms the payment is in the system. If the payment doesn't arrive by the 15th, she'll need to contact the Federal Benefits Unit at the nearest US Embassy. Unfortunately, they're swamped with calls right now.

This happened to me last year (different issue though). Took me FOUR WEEKS of trying to reach someone at SSA from Germany. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a real person at Social Security in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU They basically navigate the phone system and wait on hold for you, then call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me so much frustration when dealing with my overseas payment issue.

•That's really helpful to know about. I'll keep that as a backup option if her payment doesn't come through by the 15th as the other commenter suggested. The international calls are expensive and frustrating when you keep getting disconnected!

THE SSA IS DOING THIS ON PURPOSE!!!!!! They're holding our money to make interest on it!!! This happens EVERY February for the past 3 years I've been in Costa Rica. They claim "processing delays" but it's ALWAYS February. That's when they do their fiscal accounting tricks. My friend who used to work for Treasury confirmed this!!!

•This is not accurate. The February delay this year is specifically related to the new compliance verification system that was implemented in January 2025. While delays are frustrating, there's no evidence of SSA intentionally withholding payments to earn interest. International payments involve multiple financial institutions and compliance regulations that domestic payments don't require.

Just got off the phone with the FBU at the embassy. They said ALL February payments to foreign addresses are delayed because they're implementing new fraud prevention measures. Something about verifying life status more carefully? The woman said they're sending them out in batches and everyone should receive theirs by Feb 17th at the latest.

•How did you manage to get through to them?? I've been calling for 3 days!!!

•I emailed them instead of calling! Got a response in 2 days with a scheduled phone appointment. Try that instead of the phone. The email should be on your local embassy website under Federal Benefits Unit.

UPDATE: My mom's payment finally arrived today (Feb 12th)! Exactly as many of you said, it was just delayed due to the new verification process. Thank you all for your help and reassurance during this stressful time. For anyone still waiting, it seems they're definitely processing them, just taking longer than usual.

•Thanks for the update! This is helpful for others in the same situation. Going forward, it might be good for your mother to maintain a small emergency fund to cover these types of delays. Also, the SSA does send emails about these system changes if she signs up for notifications through her MySocialSecurity account.

•The domestic payment delays are actually a separate issue from the international delays. Domestic delays are typically related to processing backlogs at specific payment centers, while the international delays this month are specifically tied to the new compliance verification system for foreign transfers.
