How to get mom's 2023 SS-1099 tax statement without endless phone waits?
I'm at my wits' end trying to help my mom get her Social Security 1099 tax statement for 2023! We can't access her MySocialSecurity account because it needs some verification code we never received. I've been on the phone with SSA for nearly 2 hours yesterday only to get disconnected, and I'm currently on hold AGAIN trying to schedule an in-person appointment (if that's even possible?). Her taxes are due soon and I've had to piece together all her other financial documents. This 1099 is literally the last thing we need. Has anyone found a way to get these statements without the endless phone nightmare or impossible login process? Any suggestions would be SO appreciated!

Did you try the automated phone line? I think its 1-800-772-1213. They have an option just for tax forms.

•Thanks - I tried that first but the automated system said she needs to speak to a representative since her account needs verification. Then it puts me in the endless hold queue!

OMG I went through EXACTLY the same thing with my dad last month! The whole system is a NIGHTMARE!! I ended up having to take a day off work just to go to the local office when they opened. Got there at 7:30am (they open at 9) and there was already a line. But they DID print the form for us right there. Just bring your mom's ID and your ID plus something showing you handle her finances.

•That's actually really helpful to know they can print it on the spot! Did you have an appointment or just waited in line? I'm worried about taking her there (she has mobility issues) only to be turned away.

You have several options to get a replacement SSA-1099: 1. If your mom has access to her email or cell phone listed in her MySocialSecurity account, you can request a new verification code. 2. Local offices can print the 1099 without an appointment, but expect to wait. 3. You can submit a written request by mail with your mother's signature, though this may take 2-3 weeks to process. 4. If your mother can sign a Form SSA-1696 (Appointment of Representative), you could potentially create your own MySocialSecurity account to access her information as a representative payee.

•Thank you for the detailed options. The verification code is the issue - she never set up email or cell verification (she's 82). I think the in-person visit might be our best bet at this point, even with the wait.

we had same problem but the local office people were nice. just bring proof you help her with finances like if your name is on her bank acct or power of attorny. my mom got hers in 10 min once we got to the counter. but the wait was like 2 hrs lol

•That's good to know! I have power of attorney so hopefully that will work. Just trying to avoid the wait with her arthritis, but sounds like that might be unavoidable.

I struggled with this exact problem and found a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual person at Social Security without waiting on hold for hours. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - basically they hold your place in line and call you when a rep is available. I used it last week to get my husband's 1099 reissued after we got nowhere with the online system. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck on hold again.

•Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true with how impossible SSA phone lines are.

•It did work for me! Not instant but I got a call back in about 50 minutes instead of staying on hold for hours. The agent was able to mail us a new 1099.

A quicker alternative might be to use your mother's bank statements to determine her Social Security income for tax purposes. If she receives the same amount each month (or has predictable changes due to Medicare premiums), you can calculate the total received for the year. The IRS will accept this method if you can't get the official 1099-SSA in time. Just make sure to document how you calculated the amount in case of an audit. Also, if you absolutely cannot get the form before the tax deadline, file Form 4868 for an automatic extension until October. You'll still need to pay estimated taxes by the April deadline, but you'll have extra time to get all documentation in order.

•That's a really smart approach! I do have all her bank statements showing the deposits. I'll use those to calculate the amount and file her taxes, then get the official form as backup documentation when we can. Thank you for this practical solution!

Have u looked at her bank statements? My mom gets direct deposit so i just added up all the SS deposits for the year. Accountant said that was fine since it matches what the 1099 would show anyway. Just make sure u factor in any Medicare deductions if those come out before deposit.

•Someone else just suggested that too - I think that's what I'll do! She does have Medicare premiums deducted, so I'll need to add those back in. Thanks for confirming this approach works!

Also if you end up having to go to the office bring WATER AND SNACKS!! Trust me, we were there for almost 3 hours total and they don't even have a vending machine in the waiting area. And charge your phone fully!

•That's great advice - thank you! I'll definitely pack a small cooler with water and snacks for her if we end up having to go in person.
