Need help: SSA 1099 form & replacement card for elderly parent suspended from online services

Hey everyone, I need some advice. My elderly parent needs to get their SSA 1099 form for taxes, but they're suspended from online services. We're trying to make an appointment at the local office. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips on what documents we should bring or how to make the appointment go smoothly? Also, it turns out they need a replacement Social Security card too. Any insights would be really helpful!

Ugh, dealing with the SSA can be such a pain. I had to help my grandma with something similar last year. Here's what I learned: • Bring multiple forms of ID for your parent (driver's license, passport, etc.) • Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement) • Birth certificate if they have it • For the replacement card, they might need proof of citizenship too • Try to get there early, lines can be crazy long Good luck! The whole process is a headache, but hopefully this helps a bit.

This is great advice! I'd add that bringing a copy of last year's tax return can be helpful too. They sometimes ask for that.

omg yes the lines 😫 I waited 3 hours last time I went. Bring snacks and water!

Thanks so much for this detailed list! Really appreciate it. Didn't even think about the proof of address, that's super helpful.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? 🤔

Yeah, it actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I got through to an agent in about an hour. Saved me so much time and frustration.

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call. Is it really worth it?

0 coins

For me it was. I wasted hours trying to get through on my own. Time is money, ya know? Plus, the stress it saved me was priceless 😅

have you tried faxing the request? sometimes its faster than waiting for an appointment

Oof, replacement cards are the WORST. took me 3 tries to get mine 🤡 Make sure all the info on the application is 100% correct or they'll reject it

Oh no, that sounds awful! Thanks for the heads up. I'll double-check everything before we submit.

Pro tip: if you can't get an appointment online, try calling right when they open. Sometimes they have cancellations and you can snag a spot.

This! 💯 I got lucky and got a next-day appointment doing this.

idk if this helps, but my mom was in a similar situation. we ended up contacting our local congressperson's office and they were able to expedite things for us. might be worth a shot!

Wait, really? I didn't know they could do that. How long did it take?

0 coins

It took about 2 weeks from when we contacted them to getting everything sorted. Way faster than going through SSA directly!

Wow, that's a great idea! I'll definitely look into this option. Thanks!

Anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to be as frustrating as possible? 🙄 Good luck OP, you're gonna need it

Preach! 🙌 It's like they're stuck in the 1980s or something

Just a heads up, make sure your parent is okay with you handling their SSA stuff. They might need to sign a form giving you permission to speak on their behalf.

That's a great point, thank you! I'll make sure we have that sorted before the appointment.
