Will hospital stay affect my husband's TWC payment request? Marked 'unable to work'
My husband just requested his TWC payment on Saturday and honestly we're freaking out about whether we messed up. He was in the hospital for 4 days last week (nothing serious now, thank god) but when filling out the payment request, he answered truthfully that he was unable to work those days due to being hospitalized. Now we're worried this will delay or reduce his benefits? Has anyone dealt with this situation before? He really needs this payment to come through on time. Will TWC hold up his payment or make him provide proof from the hospital?

When your husband reported being unable to work due to hospitalization, TWC will likely put his payment request under review. This is normal procedure since technically you need to be 'able and available' to receive benefits. However, temporary illness/injury is usually handled differently than just refusing work. He should log into his TWC account and check if there's a message about providing medical documentation. They may want a doctor's note showing the dates he was hospitalized. If there's no message yet, keep checking daily. In my experience, these reviews typically take 7-10 business days to resolve once documentation is provided. The good news is that once resolved, he should receive payment for the days he was available to work (the non-hospital days).

•Thank you so much for the info. I'm checking his account now and don't see any messages yet, but we'll keep looking. Do you know if he should call them proactively or just wait to see if they request documentation? I'm worried about the timeline since rent is coming up soon.

•Oh no, 3 weeks? That's what I was afraid of. Did your roommate have to keep requesting payments during that time?

I went through this exact situation in January. Here's what to expect: 1. His payment will likely go to "under review" status for the claim week with hospital days 2. TWC will mail a questionnaire asking for details about his inability to work 3. He needs to respond ASAP with doctor documentation showing exact dates Important: He should ABSOLUTELY continue requesting payments on his regular schedule even while this is being resolved. The system will hold those payments until the review is complete, but if he stops requesting, he'll lose those weeks completely. Also, TWC will only reduce benefits for the actual days he was unable to work, not the entire week. So if he was hospitalized Monday-Thursday but available Friday-Sunday, he should still get partial benefits.

•Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! This makes me feel better about what to expect. We'll make sure he continues requesting payments on schedule. Do you remember how long your review process took before you got paid?

It took about 10 days for me, but honestly that was after I spent three days trying to get through to someone at TWC to check on the status. The phone lines were constantly busy, I'd wait on hold for 2+ hours and then get disconnected. Super frustrating. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to a TWC agent without the hours of waiting. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once I got through to an actual person, they were able to tell me exactly what documentation was needed and how to submit it. After that, it was resolved within a couple days. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

•Claimyr is a SCAM!!!! They take your money and don't do anything you can't do yourself!! Just keep calling TWC yourself and save your money!!!

It's definitely not a scam - it worked for me and literally saved me from losing my apartment. But everyone should make their own choices about what services to use.

Hello! I worked as a TWC claims examiner for 5 years (not anymore). When someone reports being unable to work due to hospitalization, it triggers what's called an "availability review." Here's what happens: - Your husband will likely receive a form called "Request for Work Search Information" in the mail - This form will ask for details about his hospital stay and his availability before/after - He needs to provide medical documentation showing EXACTLY when he was unable to work - TWC will calculate partial benefits for the days he WAS available The review typically takes 7-14 days once all documentation is received. He'll continue to request payments during this time, but they'll show as "pending" until the review is complete. One important thing: if this was his first payment request, it might take longer because it will combine with the standard waiting week. If he's been claiming for a while already, it should be faster.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! He's been claiming for about 2 months now, so hopefully that means it won't take as long. Should he call TWC proactively or just wait for the form to arrive in the mail?

I'd recommend waiting 3-4 business days for the form to arrive. If nothing comes by then, it would be worth calling. The form is typically generated within 48 hours of the payment request being flagged for review. Make sure he has his TWC Customer ID number, Social Security number, and details about his hospital stay ready when he calls. Also, be prepared for long wait times - mornings (right when they open) and late afternoons (after 3:30 PM) tend to have shorter waits.

•That's actually the correct procedure. TWC doesn't pay benefits for days you're unable to work - even with a doctor's note. The unemployment system is designed only for people who are ready and available to accept work. Your cousin's husband shouldn't have received benefits for the hospital days, but should have received benefits for any days in that week when he WAS available to work (assuming he met all other eligibility requirements).

Update: The form came in the mail today! It's asking for details about the hospital stay and whether he's now able to work (he is). We're gathering the discharge paperwork from the hospital and will send it back ASAP. Thanks everyone for your help and advice - this community has been so supportive!

•Great news! Make sure to make copies of everything before you send it. Also, send it certified mail if you can so you have proof it was delivered. That saved me when they claimed they never received my documents the first time.

Thanks for the tip! We'll definitely send it certified mail. On average, how long after they receive the documentation did most of you see the payment get released?

•In my case, it was about 5 business days after they confirmed receipt of my documentation. You can also upload the documentation to your TWC account if you want to speed things up (though still send the paper copy as requested). Just scan everything and look for the document upload section in your account.

Just went through this exact same situation last month! My advice - don't panic, this is actually pretty routine. When I marked "unable to work" for my surgery days, my payment went into review status within 24 hours. The key things that helped me: - I kept requesting payments every week even while under review (this is CRUCIAL) - I gathered all my hospital discharge papers and doctor notes ahead of time - When the form arrived, I responded within 48 hours The whole process took about 8 business days from when I sent back the documentation. I did lose payment for the 3 days I was actually in the hospital, but got full benefits for the other days in that week when I was available to work. Your husband did the right thing by being honest - lying would have been way worse if they found out later. Hang in there, it will get resolved!
