TWC payment showing 'ineligible' while visiting out-of-state - is this why?
My boyfriend's TWC payment just got flagged as 'ineligible' this week while he's visiting his daughter in Tennessee. He did his regular payment request and work search activities like normal, but the money didn't come through. When he checked his account it suddenly shows 'ineligible' with no explanation! He's convinced it's because he's temporarily out of state, even though he's just visiting and still looking for work. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is TWC tracking our location somehow?? We're freaking out because this payment was needed for bills. He's been calling the TWC number non-stop but either gets disconnected or hears that all agents are busy. Anyone else having payment problems this week or know what might be causing this?

•That's what I thought too! But why else would it suddenly say 'ineligible' right when he crosses state lines? It's never happened before in 3 months of claims.

The 'ineligible' status probably has NOTHING to do with being in Tennessee. TWC doesn't track your physical location through their website or anything creepy like that. It's most likely one of these issues: - Did he answer any of the payment request questions differently this time? - Has he reached his benefit year end date? - Did he report any earnings (even small ones) that might have triggered a review? - Is his work search log complete for the weeks he's claiming? Those are usually the culprits behind sudden ineligibility, not travel within the US.

•He swears he answered everything the same as always. His benefit year isn't up until August, and he didn't report any earnings. Work search was done exactly like before - 3 applications. It's just so weird this happened right when he left the state!

This happened to me too!!! Just this week my payment status changed to ineligible and I'm in TEXAS. So it's definitely not because he's visiting another state. Something is going on with TWC's system right now. A bunch of people in my apartment complex who get benefits are having the same issue. We think it's a glitch in their system.

•Really?? That actually makes me feel better. Have you been able to get through to anyone at TWC about it? We're going crazy trying to get someone on the phone.

•No luck getting through at all. Been calling for 2 days straight. Their phone system is completely overwhelmed.

I used to work for TWC (not anymore thank god) and I can tell you for certain they DO NOT track your location or care if you visit another state temporarily. You just need to be able to return to Texas if offered a job interview or position. The 'ineligible' status is almost always related to something in your payment request answers or a system flag. Nothing to do with being out of state.

•Thank you for clarifying! That's a relief. Any idea why so many people seem to be having this issue suddenly this week?

Hey there! This is actually a pretty common issue that has nothing to do with your boyfriend visiting Tennessee. TWC doesn't track your location that way. Most likely explanation is that there's a quarterly wage review happening right now (they do this every few months). When employers report wages, TWC's system automatically flags accounts for review if there's ANY discrepancy between what was reported and what claimants reported. Usually clears up within 1-2 weeks once they verify everything, but you MUST speak to someone at TWC to get it resolved. I had the exact same problem last quarter. Could NOT get through on the phones for days. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with a TWC agent in about 20 minutes instead of trying for days. They have a good video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once I got through, the TWC agent explained it was just the quarterly review and fixed it right away. Got my payment 2 days later. Hope this helps!

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! The quarterly wage review thing makes a lot of sense. We'll try that Claimyr service because we're desperate to get this sorted out. I'll update once we get through to someone.

READ YOUR CORRESPONDENCE TAB!!!! TWC always sends an explanation when your status changes to ineligible. There should be a determination letter explaining exactly why. Could be anything from a reported job interview you missed to an employer protest to quarterly wage verification. Just check your correspondence tab on the TWC website and it will tell you EXACTLY what's going on.

•OMG THANK YOU! We just checked and there IS a determination letter from yesterday! It says something about needing to verify his last employer's information because of a discrepancy in reported wages. It has absolutely nothing to do with being in Tennessee. I feel so silly now. Thank you for pointing this out!

The EXACT same thin happened to me last month. My payment request went through but then my status changed to ineligible and no payment. I panicked and thought it was because I had visited my mom in Louisiana (similar to your bf situation). Turns out it was just because my previous employer had reported some vacation payout that I didn't include in my initial claim. Had NOTHING to do with traveling. I had to call TWC like 50 times before I got through to someone, but once I did, they fixed it in like 5 minutes. The annoying part was just reaching a human being at TWC.

Glad you found the determination letter! That's the first thing to check whenever there's a status change. For anyone reading this thread in the future - you can be out of state temporarily while collecting Texas unemployment as long as: 1. You maintain your Texas residency 2. You continue doing your work searches (3 per week) 3. You can return to Texas quickly if offered a job 4. You request payments on your regular schedule TWC doesn't track your physical location through their website or apps. They're concerned with your legal residence and ability to accept work, not your temporary whereabouts.

•Thanks for that clear explanation! We're going to call tomorrow using that service someone recommended above. Hopefully we can get this sorted quickly. I'll update with what happens for anyone who finds this thread later.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! My payment request was approved on Monday but then switched to "ineligible" on Wednesday with no explanation. I've been unemployed for 2 months and this is the first time it's happened. Reading through these comments, it sounds like there's definitely something going on with TWC's system this week. I'm going to check my correspondence tab like Chloe suggested - I didn't even know that existed! Has anyone who had this issue earlier in the week gotten it resolved yet?

•Hey Liam! I just went through this exact same thing earlier this week. Definitely check your correspondence tab first - that's where they put all the explanation letters. In my case it was a wage verification issue that had nothing to do with anything I did wrong. If you don't see anything in correspondence, it might be one of those system glitches that several people mentioned. I'd recommend trying that Claimyr service Omar mentioned if you can't get through on the regular phone lines. Good luck!

This exact thing happened to my sister last month! She was visiting family in Oklahoma when her payment status suddenly changed to "ineligible" and she was convinced it was because she crossed state lines. Turns out it was completely unrelated - TWC had flagged her account because her previous employer reported some final paycheck details that didn't match what was in the system. Once she got through to someone (took forever on the phone), they cleared it up in minutes. The timing was just a coincidence! Definitely check that correspondence tab first like others mentioned, and don't panic about the out-of-state thing. TWC really doesn't track your location like that.

•That's so reassuring to hear! It really does seem like the timing is just a coincidence when people travel and then have payment issues. I'm glad your sister got it sorted out quickly once she reached someone. It's crazy how TWC's system can flag accounts for the smallest discrepancies but then not clearly explain what's happening. Thanks for sharing her experience - it definitely helps calm the nerves when you're in the middle of dealing with this!

This thread is so helpful! I had a similar scare last year when my payment got flagged as "ineligible" right after I drove to New Mexico for a family emergency. Like everyone else, I immediately thought it was because I left Texas, but it turned out to be a completely unrelated issue with my work search documentation. TWC had questions about one of my job applications that I'd submitted online. Once I provided the additional details they needed, everything went back to normal. The key lesson I learned is that TWC's timing with these reviews can make it seem like your travel caused the problem, but it's almost always something else entirely. The correspondence tab really is your best friend - that's where all the real answers are!

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm actually new to the unemployment system (just started my claim last month) and had no idea that TWC sends these review letters through the correspondence tab. I've been so focused on just doing my payment requests that I never thought to check for additional communications from them. It's honestly a relief to know that these timing coincidences with travel are pretty common and that there's usually a logical explanation buried in the system somewhere. Thanks for sharing your experience - it really helps newcomers like me understand how this all works!
